making news on this tuesday, january 25th. >> airport terror. a blast inside russia's busiest airport kills dozens. we'll have a live report from moscow. winter's wrath. freezing fawn on thes and even cars, in a region basing for another monster storm. and dangerous distraction. several states on the verge of a crackdown of earphone-wearing walkers and joggers. good morning. and thanks for being with us. security is ultra-tight in moscow this morning, a day after a terrifying suicide blast rips through the city's busiest airport. >> that bomb went off in the international arrivals area, killing 35 people and injuring 2

dozen more. we learn that eight foreigners are among the dead. >> we turn to miguel marquez on the phone from moscow. good morning, miguel. >> reporter: good morning. 110 still in the hospital. 39 of them are serious, unfortunately. it sounds like the death toll will go up. authorities here are still concentrating on the area in southern russia. they believe that's the area where these bombers came from. there are conflicting reports exactly on how it was carried out. but it was in the nonsecured area. it was the area just outside of the passport controlled or the customs controlled area of the airport, where individuals would come out of the airport, being met by well-wishers and friends. it was that area where the bomb exploded. there's conflicts reports on how many bombers. many say there were two bombers, a man and a woman together. there was a suitcase, they say, with as much as 15 pounds of explosives, packed with metal around it. there are also, now, reports that witnesses say, they heard

the man screaming, i'll kill you all, i'll kill you all, prior to blowing up that package. >> that, again, was miguel marquez, live outside of moscow. thank you, miguel. we'll hear more from him coming up on "gma." we turn to our other big story, the president's state of the union address, and a new political reality. >> mr. obama is under big pressure to rev up the economy while also cutting spending. >> emily schmidt joins us from washington with a preview. good morning, emily. >> reporter: vinita and rob, good morning to you. tonight marks the second time that president obama will give a state of the union address. and this time, those midterm elections reshaped his audience. >> the president of the united states. >> reporter: tonight, president obama will face a congress made up of more republicans than last year. meaning, his theme of how we win the future must first win over those in the room. >> my principal focus, my number

one focus, is making sure we are competitive, we are growing and creating jobs. not just now. but well into the future. >> reporter: the president says there's five pillars of his focus. innovation, education, infrastructure, reforming government, and reducing the national debt. some republicans question the plans. >> i can't see how we can possibly spend more money at this point. we really have to have, at least i think, this year, a 10% reduction in spending. >> this is about jobs and the economy. but i think he will make an argument about america needing to thrive in a global economy. >> reporter: the latest abc news/"washington post" poll finds 72% of americans say the economy should be the top priority for the president and congress. and this year, there's at least a symbolic sign of cooperation. at least five dozen members of congress have signed on to bipartisan seating. they hope to visually bring the

difference that has always been so clear across the aisle. this year, republicans and the tea party will give state of the union responses, really giving us the first test as to whether this professed spirit of cooperation actually extends beyond the president's words. rob and vinita? >> emily schmidt, in washington. thanks, emily. and tonight, abc has live coverage of the president's speech and the republican response. it all starts at 9:00 tonight, eastern. there is another high-level departure from the white house staff. energy and climate adviser, carol browner, is leaving. browner got automakers to improve fuel economy and emission standards. and got billions of stimulus dollars for renewable energy. but she failed to get a comprehensive energy bill. and the future prospects are now dim. and former white house chief of staff, rahm emanuel, is in a desperate race against time in his bid to be the mayor of chicago. an illinois appeals court has ruled him ineligible to run because he lived part of last year in washington. emanuel immediately filed an

appeal to the state supreme court. but early voting starts next week. a former stealth bomber engineer has now been sentenced for selling military secrets to the chinese. noshir gowadia appeared in court. prosecutors say he helped the chinese, in order to pay the mortgage on his ocean front home in hawaii. this morning, the chinese dismissed the report that information was used to build their own stealth aircraft. and it's been a particularly violent few days for the men and women who protect our streets. 13 police officers have been shot since thursday in several separate incidents. four of those officers shot fatally. the most recent shooting yesterday in florida took the lives of two st. petersburg officers. a u.s. marshal was also hurt in that incident. and the mayor of the nation's largest city is urging washington to take action against gun violence. new york mayor michael bloomberg wants to close loopholes that allows some people to buy guns without a background check. the mayor says it's now up to congress to do something.

>> all they've got to do is stand up and say this, is not about the second amendment. this is not about your right to bear arms and hunt and have target practice as a sport. this is about plain, common-sense enforcement about laws on the books. >> at the mayor's side are victims or family members who have been killed or hurt in mass shootings. now, to the weather. the northeast is finally getting a chance to thaw out today, after temperatures dipped to 30 below zero in some areas. >> this fountain in manhattan turned into an ice sculpture as the thermometer plunged to just 6 degrees. that's the oldest temps in five years. >> and look at this car encased in a thick layer of ice. almost immediately when it was drenched by a ruptured water line. when the driver got in, he turned on the heat. it was so hot in the car and so cold, it shattered the entire back window. >> oh, man. >> see right there? now, for this morning's weather from around the nation. a much warmer day in the northeast, with a mix of morning rain and snow from new york to

overseas markets are reacting as the dow closes in on 12,000. tokyo's nikkei average rose 1.2% today. hong kong's hang seng dipped slightly. in london, the ftse opened slightly lower. on wall street, the dow surged 108 points yesterday, closing at its highest level since june of 2008. the nasdaq added 28 points. general motors could soon be number one again. the automaker's worldwide sales came within 30,000 of beating toyota for the top spot. and gm expects its sales to be even better this year. one reason for gm's surge is china. it sold more vehicles there than in the u.s. last year. the first time in its 102-year history that it sold more vehicles in a foreign market

than here at home. mcdonald's is the latest food company to warn that it may have to raise prices this year. the burger chain says it will hike the price on selected items to offset the rising cost of beef and other ingredients. all of the major packaged food companies, like kraft, already warned they may raise prices, too. it will be easier to see important nutrition information at the supermarket. the food industry has designed a new label that begin appearing on the front of packages in the next few months. it shows the number of calories, the amount of salt, sugar and saturated fat. but critics say it doesn't offer enough detail. if you are anxious to get your federal tax refund this year, there's a new way to find out when it will arrive. the irs has released a free app for the iphone and android, that allows you to track your refund and get some tax tips. are distracted walkers as dangerous as distracted drivers? lawmakers in arkansas and new york are considering laws that crack down on pedestrians that use cell phones and music players. arkansas would ban pedestrians,

whoa. there it goes. there it goes. whoa. a >> that is a dramatic e police chase in the los angeles area overnight. the suspect, crashing into another car. it started back in pasadena and wound through ten other suburbs. after crashing his car, the suspect was promptly taken to jail. and now, for a look at road conditions today. snow and ice on i-95, from new york to boston and maine.

and on i-80, from new york to pennsylvania. wet on i-10 and 20, from louisiana to florida. and on 95, from florida to the carolinas. >> if you are today, expect airport delays in memphis, new orleans, boston, charlotte, and miami. the man at the center of the tucson shooting rampage has now entered a not guilty plea in federal court. >> jared loughner is charged with trying to kill gabrielle giffords and two of her aides. the first of many charges he will now face. corey rangel of our phoenix station was there. >> reporter: flashing a broad smile at times, even appearing to laugh at one point, jared loughner sat next to his attorney in the courtroom. handcuffed and wearing an orange jumpsuit and eyeglasses, loughner stared straight ahead for most of the hearing. despite his behavior in the courtroom, and reports about a bizarre and troubled past, loughner's attorney never brought up his competence. arguing it would make it easier

for the victims and their families to attend. while the judge did not make a ruling on a possible move, loughner's attorney told the judge, she had no objection. but wanted to know where loughner would be held if the case was moved. after the hearing, loughner left the federal courthouse in a cargo van surrounded by a convoy of law enforcement officers. >> then that, again, was corey rangel reporting. congresswoman giffords remains in intensive care after suffering her first setback. doctors say fluid has appeared in her injured brain. and they have inserted a shunt to drain it. giffords won't be transferred to a rehab center until the problem is under control. although, she has several hours of basic therapy where she is now. in new york, a woman charged in a wrenching case of child kidnapping appeared in a federal court. ann pettway has confessed to taking carlina white from a new york city hospital 23 years ago and raising the girl as her own. pettway turned herself in after carlina found her biological parents.

pettway told police, she took the baby after having several miscarriages. police on long island, new york, are now searching for a serial killer. they say all four women whose bodies were found on a desolate beachfront were killed by the same person. the victims were all prostitutes who advertised online. and all had met with a client just before their murders. police say the women were killed elsewhere and then, dumped at that beach. a woman in argentina is recovering after falling 23 stories in a suicide attempt. the victim landed in a sitting position on top of the taxi parked outside of the hotel where she was staying. she was even able to speak to paramedics in the moments after the fall. the driver stepped away from the taxi just before the impact. a high-end jewelry store in florida is out about $7 million worth of merchandise. police say thieves got into the store next door and then jackhammered and torched their way into the vault. the store will eventually get its money back, since the jewelry was insured.

detectives are now looking at the surveillance tapes. and when duty called the vice president, he did not hesitate. vice president biden reported for jury duty in his home state of delaware. he sat in a waiting room along with other potential jurors and his secret service agents. mr. biden telephoned the president during the break. and he was dismissed without being called to serve. well, it's time, now, for sports. so, here's sara walsh over at espn news. >> good morning. monday brought another big upset in the college basketball world. number two, pittsburgh, hosting notre dame. and ben hansbrough just dominates the second half. hitting a three-pointer there to give notre dame the lead. and then, driving here, to the right side for the lay-in. hansbrough would run the same, exact play here again with the right hand. and with 20 seconds left to play, hansbrough driving, spinning. making the layup. he had 19 points, 7 assists.

arraigned today on involuntary manslaughter charges in connection with the death of pop star michael jackson. prosecutors say murray gave jackson a lethal dose of an anesthetic.
