this saturday morning january 29th when the sun comes up authorities will begin searching the canal for the bodies of a suspect and four-year-old boy after the suspect's car was pulled out of the water without any bodies inside. a fifth day of protests in egypt has tens of thousands demand that the president be ousted. 38 people have died in the rioting with 2,000 others injured. >> good morning. plenty of clouds around today but will the showers hold off for half the weekend? i'll let you know coming up. >> thanks, lisa. i'm jenelle wang. a dive team resumes searching the canal this morning for the bodies of a kidnapped four-year-old boy and his abductor. the silver toyota corolla described in a statewide amber alert was pulled out of the canal yesterday but no bodies inside. >> unfortunately the vehicle's empty. josé and giuliani are not in the

car. >> by nightfall the silver toyota was hauled up out of the canal. >> two of the windows were down. we haven't completely finished inspecting the vehicle. detectives have to go through the inside to find any potential evidence. the vehicle is badlied damaged. >> the dive team descended into a cave-like siphon system located between two sections of the canal. the siphon is designed to move water under the creek bed through three 15 by 15 foot square tubes. they found the silver corolla lodged inside one of those tubes. a sophisticated sonar system got close enough to read the license plate. >> we're going to continue to search the siphon, the canal downstream and we're going to continue to look and hold out hope. >> officials said with the 42 degree water in the canal, bodies would not surface for 14 days. meanwhile outside giuliani's family home in patterson, there was silence as friends and

neighbors prayed inside. >> still holding out hope? >> absolutely. i think there's always hope for, you know, until there's finality. >> the mood in the home is still hopeful. and they hope the child will come home safely. >> but neighbors set candles on their doorsteps after watching the car brought up from the canal on tv. >> i broke down. >> she's been worried ever since she heard the kidnapping suspect yelled at giuliani's family in the past. >> he would come in here and threaten them. threaten to kill 'em. >> but giuliani's mother was in carmichael the night near sacramento for a vigil and she expressed eternal hope. >> as a mom, you know, you would think i'd get a gut feeling like something's wrong. but i never -- i've never gotten that feeling. that's why i still believe that he's out there somewhere. >> now that the car has been found, the search will resume in the canal for bodies.

in patterson, leslie brinkley. >> overseas the egyptian people's revolt against the egyptian president hosni mubarak regime continues. the death toll 38 and 2,000 people wounded. tens of thousands of protestors are gathering for a peaceful demonstration in downtown cairo. thousands violated overnight curfews. al-jazeera reports 20 bodies in the streets of allex sandra to the north. calls for the egyptian president hosni mubarak to resign is only because of his promise to bring a new government and reform. state television announced his cabinet officially resigned. president obama phoned him yesterday urging he sake concrete steps to expand the people's rights and refrain from using violence against protestors. >> we'll continue to stand up

for the rights of the egyptian people and work with their government in pursuit of a future more just, more free and more hopeful. >> cellphone service is now partially restored after egypt's military cut off nearly all modes of communication yesterday. internet service is still down though. that's making it harder for 2,000 foreigners at cairo international airport for trying to book flights out of the country. bay area members of the egyptian community will rally today in downtown san francisco to show support for the rebellion against the regimen. the new protest at market and montgomery streets will call for an end for u.s. support for the regimen. lillian kim talks with local families very worried about loved ones back home. >> what was supposed to be a regular friday night meeting turned into a special prayer service. most of the members at the orthodox church in hayward have friends and family in egypt and tonight they prayed for their safety. >> it's really scary. i feel like we're watching history in the making.

it's a revolution. and i hope that the end result is something that's great. but i think nobody knows what's gonna come of it. >> since the violent demonstrations broke out, many in the bay area haven't been able to get through to their friends and family. the egyptian government has restricted internet and cellphone service. even those who can get through are choosing not to for fear the lines are tapped or trace. all they can do is watch the turmoil unfold on television. opinions are strong over how the protests have been carried out so far. >> who make fires and to destroy the shops and restaurants and banks, you know. >> all of this puts the u.s. government in a tough spot. while it can't ignore the overwhelming call for a new regimen, egypt is a major u.s. ally. a former correspondent for "the new york times." >> the united states has needed

egypt for intelligence, for terrorism assistance, for help with israel/palestinian issues. >> hopefully a change to the better. there's more democracy maybe. more justice. that's what i hope for. >> lillian kim, abc 7 news. pacifica police say a suspected drunk driver cashed her pickup truck into a bar right at closing time. you can see the result of the 2 a.m. crash. two customers were injured and taken who the hospital. the driver carla andrade of daly city was hospitalized for injuries. she was arrested on a felony d.u.i. charge. a job that's been around since the golden gate bridge opened is going away. the district voted yesterday to

replace toll collectors on the bridge with an electronic system starting september 2012. the bridge will collect tolls through fas trak or scanning license plates and billing drivers. the move is expected to save $19 million over the next eight years. the district thinks it can reassign the 32 toll takers to other positions. a coalition of bay area interests will gather for the save our caltrain summit, a severe budget shortfall next year threatens to derail the computerer trains. despite high ridership, caltrain is the only bay area transit agency that lacks dedicated funding. organizers hope to come up with solutions. they say people along the peninsula have a vested interest in caltrain even if they don't ride the trains because caltrain carries the traffic equivalent of three full highways of 101 during rush hour. city leaders on the verge of naming a new police chief but

community activists are criticizing both the expected choice and the selection process. the city manager is expected to recommend acting police chief chris moore for the job. karina rusk has reaction. >> community members representing a number of ethnic groups spoke with one voice. they think oakland's police chief anthony batts is the best person to lead san jose's police department and want the city council to meet with him. >> chief batit is is far and way better qualified to do this job. chief batts didn't have a chance to speak with the council so the project is in hijack. >> they recommend the council hire acting police chief chris moore for the top job. former police officer and council member pete constant is looking forward to tuesday's vote. >> i think he's a person that brings a very wide range of experience and education, and i think he's a very good leader. >> people opposed to moore say

the shoreline today and throughout the bay area much of the day, maybe afternoon clearing in the south bay but as we get started today, you'll notice the temperatures, a lot of 50s out there. warmer all around the bay area with 51 in oakland. 50 in redwood city as well as san jose. cooler numbers up to the north with three-quarter mile visibility in santa rosa. 44 by the delta. 47 in livermore. here are our highlights. showers will arrive this evening north of the airport. probably not until after 6:00 tonight. if you see anything at all. but the front moves through overnight tonight. some showers, the possibility of a thunderstorm tomorrow, cool and dry weather again for next week. here's the setup. we have had high pressure keeping us dry for about three weeks now. it's about to give way to this system. it's a quick mover. doesn't have a whole lot of rain associated with it and it will begin to move to the east-southeast today and that will allow showers in mendocino county later on today and maybe

as close as cloverdale and santa rosa by about 8:00 tonight. 5:00 you see light returns up by ukiah. 8:00 the front pushing through the north bay still offshore and by 10:00 in the overnight hours the frontal passage and behind it the more unstable air there. there's the low. by 8:00 tomorrow morning the showers moving through the south bay. our east bay communities and by 10:00 still looking at the chance of some showers and a thunderstorm right on through the early afternoon hours. it will be a cool day then for the rest of sunday with rainfall amounts anywhere up to an inch in the north bay. around point reyes. a tenth to three-quarters of an inch in the south bay. we are looking at a colder system bringing the chance of snow into the sierra nevada with 3 to 6 inches at lake level.

hasn't showed since january 14th. a winter weather advisory with about half a foot to a foot about 7,000 feet. they need some new snow. south bay numbers upper 50s. partial afternoon clearing there. 56 redwood city with a lot of clouds around. san francisco low 50s today and the north bay we see the cloud cover. hazy afternoon sun in sonoma, 55 for you. hercules low 50s with mid-50s in san leandro and castro valley. over the hills not only low clouds and fog but perhaps a peek of sun throughout the afternoon. the numbers remain cooler today. one of the warmer locations around morgan hill with 60 today. the accu-weather 7-day forecast, late tonight chance of showers. showers and a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow. not going to see much in the way of rain but back to our dry, cooler weather early part of the week and we should warm up. hopefully some rain coming our way but it's not looking great. >> we have to see.

workers. governor jerry brown announced he's cracking down on state cars to save money. he wants to cut the government fleet in half. nanette miranda reports from sacramento. >> in yet another measure to cut costs, governor jerry brown issued an executive order to scale back the state fleet including an immediate stop to new car purchases. he believes about 11,000 vehicles don't serve a public safety or health function. another 4500 permits allow certain state workers to take vehicles home for their daily commute. >> i notice a lot of cars, driven by state workers so i put out the order, we're cuttin' 'em in half and look to see that every use of a state car is needed. >> the order is expected to save $16.5 million a year getting praise from taxpayer groups. >> the area of government-owned cars and the abuse of the vehicle fleet has been one of our pet peeves for many, many years. >> earlier this month governor

brown ordered half of nearly 100,000 state-issued cellphones be turned in by june with brown being the first to give his up. because the savings are small, the fleet and cellphone cuts may be more about laying the groundwork for the bigger plan to ask voters to extend the temporary tax hike. >> he realizes that as long as there's these massive fleets out there and state employees that have all these cellphones, that arguing for tax increases is more difficult. >> a new poll shows strong support for brown putting the tax hikes on a special election ballot but getting them to approve them may be a bigger hurdle. >> each year seems we're asked to pay more and more and more and getting less and less and less. >> brown's state of the state address is to ask californians for their help getting california back on track. >> teachers in the pittsburg district are offered early retirement for the second straight year.

last year about 25 teachers took incentive to arrive early to avoid layoffs. more than 100 teachers are eligible to get monthly payments lasting from five years to life for retiring early. ironically the incentive money comes from federal job creation stimulus funds. this morning sixflags discovery kingdom of vallejo is hosting its annual job fair. it needs to fill 400 of its seasonal positions. admission reps, tram drivers, ride operators and security workers. the job fair is at the university of phoenix campus in fairfield from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. more signs emerging that silicon valley's economy is recovering. google is launching its biggest ever hiring drive and then there is construction, a lot of it. david louie reports from san jose. >> vacant office space is the clear byproduct of the

commitment downturn in the silicon valley. a big reason is renewed venture capital activity. they made $21.8 billion in investments last year. that's up 19% from the year before. it's also the first increase since 2007. silicon valley startups got 8.5 billion. that's four times more than new england, the second place region for investments. hiring translates into demand for housing and there's good news on that front, too. san jose mayor chuck reid told business leaders at a breakfast event sponsored by the silicon valley business journal that permits for 1100 housing units have been issued. one of the south bay's largest development companies is ready to build housing. >> rents have been down for the last three years but now they're starting to go up 8 or 9% is what most people are predicting. it's getting to the point where it almost justifies -- i say even justifies new construction. >> there are no signs of a broad-based recovery. tom warner, ceo at sun power,

says banks are still not lending money. >> that lending is a huge factor for employment. that creates broad-based employment growth. >> mayor reid says private sector job growth will help to offset government layoffs. >> despite losses in government, sectors were growing. that's a good thing. clean tech is growing rapidly. we'll see net job growth over the next year but we will see government shrink. >> getting projects like this completed will help city coffers for workers that spend money locally but sometimes that takes about 18 months to happen once new jobs are created. in santa clara, david louie, abc 7 "moneyscope." >> u.c. davis has uncorked the world's most environmentally sophisticated center for learning how to make wine and beer. students will focus on studying and creating their own wine, beer, cheese and produce using environmentally sustainable

control by 2018. it has devastated property values here but there's a second provision that allows the company to raise rents on any lots where people leave. so earlier this month dozens of residents were suspicious when that landlord sent premature eviction warnings after mostly minor violations of a routine state inspection. they included trash, leaves and on one home improperly installed christmas lights. but jeannine has to remove this shed which the inspector says is a fire hazard. >> it seems to me a waste of money but if you don't have it, what are you supposed to do. >> enter susan adams that chairs the marin housing authority that has an emergency relief fund for members in distress. now they'll funnel some of that money here, a case of a county protecting its own against an out of town landlord. >> whether they're bullies or not bullies, certainly they believe they have the right to use the tactics they're using.

later on today. showers arriving mendocino and sonoma county probably 5:00 and the chance throughout the evening hours tonight. 5:00 the rain line by ukiah but pushing through santa rosa, 8:00. it's not quite into san francisco but by midnight we're looking at the frontal passage and behind it we see more showers and some colder air. so in the north bay tomorrow morning and even in the east bay, the south bay, look for the possibility of some showers, on isolated thunderstorm and by the afternoon things will quiet down but it will be cool the next several days as this cold air is gonna replace what we have had. it hasn't been too warm in the past couple days. up to an inch of rain in the north bay, especially the mountains. the higher elevations about a 10th of an inch. parts of the south bay could see anywhere from a half to three-quarters of an inch. i talked about the snow a little in the mountains.

the first snow since the middle of the month with 2 to 4, 3 to 6 inches, similar around there at lake level and above 7,000 feet anywhere from 6 to 12 inches. keep that in mind if you're headed up to the mountains. really been rough conditions heading back late in the weekend. but then, you know, we are looking at the holiday. president's day february. 58 santa clara today. look for afternoon sun, a few peeks palo alto. 57 there. 57 mountain view with low 50s san francisco. temperatures today below the average, about 5 degrees across most neighborhoods today. 54 vallejo near east bay looking for about the same in berkeley with upper 50s from union city and newark. maybe hazy afternoon sun by a lot of cloud cover hanging around the delta today. inland valleys, 56 concord with walnut creek coming in the mid-50s. numbers 5 degrees cooler here but low 60s. the 7-day forecast, chance of

rain in the north bay later on tonight and spreading south across the bay area throughout the entire evening. chance of thunderstorms tomorrow. back to a cool, dry weather pattern early part of the week. there's our groundhog! >> he's so cute. >> going to warm things up for us hopefully wednesday, thursday and friday. looks like the first part of february will be dry. >> more dry weather. thanks so much, lisa. a research team at stanford is working at a technology that might be compared to the human nose. it's going to detect and identify substances using the science of smell. here's health and science reporter carolyn johnson with the details. >> the average human nose can distinguish among some 200 scents. now researchers are attempting to duplicate that sensitivity in a machine. >> so, for example, when we smell things, it's multiple -- molecules will interact with multiple receptors. doing kinds of the same thing with our dna's. >> in his lab the professor and

his team are manufacturing synthetic dna but instead of controlling functions in the human body, their dna is engineered to react to compounds in the environment. >> we want to be able to smell contaminants in the air. for example, in environmental applications. we'd like to be able to taste toxins in the water. >> to accomplish that, they replaced certainly molecules of the dna with fluorescent compounds. seven colors in all. they exposed their dna sensors to vapors injected into a vial. this was the result. the tiny beads of dna turned different colors depending on the vapor they were reacting to. >> then we have red, orange, yellow. >> and with thousands of possible dna combinations, research assistant c. k. koo believes the technology could start to approach the complexity of human smell. >> it is pretty similar because we use a set of sensors.

not just one, a library of sensors to shape different -- just like nose. >> hope to use it to power inexpensive microscopes like this one we profiled last year it was crafted by an i-phone by the university of california. >> the idea is that we could sense 100 different things with ten different sensors by reading a pattern of responses. >> a hi-tech nose. not meant to replace the sense of smell but to mimic it. carolyn johnson, abc 7 news. >> don't go away. welcome back on this saturday morning. 6:49. a live picture of the golden gate bridge. traffic moving slowly. a little fog but really it's just the chillier temperatures and we could see some rain moving in. lisa argen will have an update coming up. >> renting a vacation home is a popular alternative to renting a hotel room but sometimes has a big security deposit and not always easy to get that money back. one family left their rental unit immaculate and still couldn't get their $500 back. here's mike finney with their story. >> karen demartini still raves about her family's summertime vacation in hawaii. >> the place was beautiful. they had two pools and then they had access to the beach right out the back. >> karen, her husband and three children rented a villa at this

beach front resort at oahu. everything was ideal she says until they got back home and karen's aloha spirit faded fast. >> just frustrated and mad. >> here's why. the demartinis paid $5,064 for 12 nights at the villa including a $500 security deposit. they said the deposit would be refunded 45 to 60 days if there is no damage to the place. >> after the 45th day i said pretty soon we'll get our check back because i knew we left the place in very nice condition. >> 45 days passed then 60 days. no check arrived. so karen e-mailed the manager of the villa. >> and he said, oh, you're on the top of our list. >> however, weeks later still no refund. so karen contacted vacationrentsbyowner, a website where the owner listed the rental. they intervened but still the owner did not return the

deposit. >> now i'm starting to get worried. $500 is a lot of money to us. >> the demartinis kept calling and e-mailing the villa's owner and the manager john greenwood all without result. i took care of your place and you turned around and think you can keep the money. i was so frustrated. i was watching channel 7 one night and it's like hmm, "7 on your side." >> we took the case to vacation rentals by owner. the company again contacted the owner and this time it worked. >> three days later we get a letter from the man who owned the place and we're so sorry and here's your money. >> neither the owner nor manager responded to our request for a statement about what happened in this case; however, vacation rentals by owners said when we were informed of the demartinis' issue in october we immediately took action to assist them by reaching out to the homeowner. we assumed the situation had been resolved. however, after hearing from abc 7, we have reopened the case and

have taken appropriate action. the company would not say what that action was; however, the website shows the unit is no longer listed. >> i was so happy that "7 on your side" was able to get my money back. the trip itself was fabulous. it just makes it even better 'cause the way things happened. >> in most states including california and hawaii, failure to return a security deposit may entitle the tenant to collect damages on top of the deposit amount. i'm michael finney, "7 on your side." >> a sneak peek. breeders compete at the kennel club annual dog show ranked one of the most prestigious in the nation. can i eat heart healthy without giving up taste?
