nationwide curfew is once again defied. earlier today, police station in suez was torched. looters broke into buildings in cairo and broke into the egypt museum, breaking artifacts and tearing the heads off ancient mummies. citizen is moved in to protect the museum, forming a human chain around it. >> we wish the people all over the world that egyptian people protect the treasure. >> the death toll jumped in cairo, the body of a man killed today was carried through the crowd. these scenes are in stark contrast from other images. the army replaced the police, but they're doing nothing to break up the dem moan -- demonstrations or enforce the

curfew, they're giving them rides on tampgz. >> far less tension, and that's because there's no riot police anywhere. the military has taken over. the protestors get a lot more respect. >> attempting to pacify the masses, president hosni mubarak named a vice-president. a role that hasn't exist under him. he is egypt's powerful intelligence chief, and now mubarak's obvious successor. >> they're setting up to scene for mubarak to leave, and mubarak never had a vice-president for one reason, because if you have a vice-president, somebody can take over. >> the protestors aren't buying it. >> the people choose the president. not mubarak. mubarak can't choose for us. >> in this neighborhood and in neighborhoods across cairo,

vigilante groups have come up, in order to protect their property. the unrest is far from over. abc news, cairo. >> alan: egypt's internet and cell phone services were shut down, but slowly it's been restored to some areas. john allston has more on the impact of social media. >> at last track the internet was available for less than 10% of the population in egypt. it was shut down by all but one provider. some cell phone service is coming back online, and texting is either nonexistent or spotty. unrest in egypt. a political uprising in a world of modern technology, which means cameras seemingly everywhere. tweeting, blogging, facebook. this woman moved to cairo.

she was able to skype from a cairo hotel, one of the few places where there was still internet access. she talked about the chaos. >> we got ourselves back after not having them all day yesterday, which was wonderful, because having the entire country be called to have their final protest and nobody could communicate it. we didn't know if people were okay. it was incredibly scarey to not know. >> half a world away, this technology expert sits in his palo alto home and watches tweets from cairo. >> this one an hour ago. tookpicks of tear gas cameras -- cansters with "made in the u.s.a." >> it's how people spread the message and get international sympathy. so, certainly, social media and

something like this could happen around here. >> it's scary. >> reporter: a neighbor describes the shooting victim as a boyfriend of the woman who lived in this house. police had received complaints that he was reportedly patrolling up and down taft avenue, in camouflage, with what appeared to be an assault rifle that turned out to be a replica. >> it was a weapon. there was an automatic rifle. >> what did it fire? >> we don't know yet. we haven't been able to test it. report police say he entered his house with at least two people inside. one ran out. the situation escalated from there. >> the officers approached the home from the front. as they got up the stairs, a gentleman, who we have not confirmed his name yet, exited the home, and confronted the officers, armed with an automatic rifle. the officers immediately opened fire on the gentleman, which

weeks of dry weather. finally starting to get back to where we should be this time of year. it is still winter, folks. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. and you can see the rain bands continuing to feed inland. the cold front is making its way across the bay area right now. we'll take you in closer. my friends in berkeley and concord, san ramon, picking up pockets of moderate rain. a lot of this is light, but scattered darker greens, indicating the moderate rain. to the south of san jose now, down toward gilroy, holster, and even the watsonville area still picking up some pockets of moisture. so we'll continue with showers and a chance of a few isolated thunderstorms overnight. we'll keep that in the forecast for tomorrow morning, and back off on the shower activity by sunday afternoon. we'll see a little drying there,

and it will be school try for much of next week. here's a look at our lows tonight. the clouds overhead, temperatures in the 40s, and this is the cold front that's bringing us the rain right now, and it's going to be this area of low pressure that is going to wind in or spin in over using that will though bring us a good possibility of seeing those isolated thunderstorms overnight, simply because it's going bring in colder air, some unstable air as well. there's the cold front moving through right now, as we get into the 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 time period, that low is going to move across the bay area and could possibly see the thunderstorm activity by 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning and it will exit and by the afternoon we'll start to see clearing. maybe an inch of rain in the north bay. santa rosa, already picking up a quarter inch of rain from the first system that moved through earlier this evening. the high country, looking for close to a foot of snow above
