most internet service has been cut off for a third day. the state department is prepared to evacuate thousands of u.s. citizens on chartered planes. a spokesman says it will take several flights over many days to handle the numbers of americans trying to leave the country. there are thousands of americans waiting for that chance tonight. lillian kim is in the news room. >> reporter: the chartered planes will fly americans from cairo to europe. there are tens of thousands or americans believed to be in egypt, and the state department says there will be enough flights to take out every american citizen who wants to leave. since the protests began it's been difficult for people to leave the country. commercial flights have been cancelled, delayed or suspended. now that the state department is offering chartered planes, americans have a way to get

home. internet interruption in the country is making it difficult for people to find out what's going on. some are hoping the reservations on commercial flights will hold up. marvin has a british airways flight scheduled for tomorrow. >> we made a call last night, and on the internet, operator talk to her son, and he is going to tell others in the family, and we'll get out when we can. i just presumed that british airways is probably flying. and we have tickets for tomorrow. >> the state department says there are 52,000 americans registered with the embassy in could i row. -- could i -- cairo. many people don't register so it's unclear how many citizens

are in egypt. >> alan: bay area people with close ties to egypt have been watching these events up fold -- unfold in their native country and on tv. here's more on that part of the story. >> reporter: bay area egyptians say all they can do is wait for updates on television and monitor facebook around the clock. >> the protestors in the square. >> reporter: he and his wife came back from a visit to their native country just one day before tuesday's uprising began. they had a sense something big was on the horizon. >> taxi drivers were going on and on about how bad things are, can't feed their families, have to work two jobs. >> there is momentum and there is a general atmosphere of the possibility. things are happening. things are in the works.

>> reporter: thousands of miles away from their home lean, this egyptian christians turned their concern into prayer during sunday services. >> for many of them, their family and freps back home are marching in the streets. this immigrants have a new home now but they understand the frustrations in their native country too well. >> corruption, everybody you talk to, speaks of corruption. >> we have been in this -- a country governed by oppression, by dictators. >> life under president mubarak's rule is all this man knows. he moved to the u.s. two years ago. even though protestors are demanding mubarak step down, there's fear of what could come next. >> if this government is overthrown, the next strongest power on the street is muslim

days. we take a look at the seven-day forecast coming up. >> alan: oakland police have identified the man shot and killed by officers in the rockridge district yesterday. matthew cicelski was shot after he pointed a fake assault weapon out police. police received calls that man with weapons war -- was harassing residents. he forced his way in a home, and when he came out, the pointed the rifle at the officers and they fired. >> the san francisco police departmentes revisiting the idea of arming officers with tasers. this comes after three officer-involved shootings. last year the police commission rejected a proposal to explore the idea of using tasers, citing safety and liability concerns. now some think they could make a

case for tasers as an alternative. critics say although they're leslie that, the stale pose a health risk. today is the first annual fred korematsu day and hundreds showed up to celebrate. a law was passed last september designating january 30th as day of recognition for the civil rights pioneer. he was arrested and convicted after refusing to go to an internment camp with thousands of other japanese-american during world war ii. he filed suit and his conviction was overturned. hundreds attended the celebration, including reverend jesse jackson, and oakland mayor jean quan. his daughter says the support has been overwhelming. >> education was my father's mission, and he truly believed that if you can make a difference in the world, if you appreciate each other's differences. if you're going to fight racism, we need to teach these lessons at a very young age. >> alan: on this day of

recognition, schools are being incurrented to teach students korematsu's story and the importance of civil rights. state senator mark leno wants to stop employers from firing employees who use michigan marijuana outside of work. and it would make it illegal not to hire someone because they use medical marijuana. the state courts rule nothing bars an employer from firing medical marijuana uses who test positive for pot. coming up, two minor earthquakes shake the south bay this morning. also, food for the homeless. a bay area girls school serves up lunch to dozens of families. >> and a human -- huge rummage

>> thousands of people line up in the rain for a small shot at hollywood. an opportunity to be in an upcoming matt damon movie. the second day the long lines of people hoping to be extras formed outside the embarcadero ymca. it's called contagion. the action thriller is about preventing the spread of a deadly virus. the producers need 2,000 extras for the san francisco scenes, and filming will take place between february 9th and 17th. at it set to be released in october. up next, hundreds of dogs compete in one of the biggest dog shows in the state. and as one storm clears out, can we expect another? we'll ask leigh glaser. >> mike: a couple of great finishes today in sport. a not so familiar name winning the australian open, and a guy named buck buck won

for mostly sunny conditions. a cool day for your monday. and then beyond that, just dry weather pattern is going to set back up for us and we will begin to warm temperatures up gradually through the week. overnight temperatures, last night we were in the 40s because of the cloud cover. tonight we're going to move temperatures down into the 30s. to napa, 38. watch out for the development of some of that valley fog there. san francisco, we'll keep you in the 40s. 47. 45 for oakland. 41 for san jose. antioch, livermore in the upper 30s tonight. this is the story. low pressure just barreling in here during the overnight hours early this morning. it's now since pushed into nevada. we're on the back side of this system, and that's where the clearing is taking place, we have some northerly winds bringing in a cooler air mass, a dryer air mass so a clearing tonight and temperatures bottom out in the 30s in many
