president hosni mubarak's departure. they say protests will continue every day until he steps down. and san jose state men's hockey team has been suspended indefinitely accused of abusing alcohol. >> 30s our north bay valleys, lower 50s downtown and maybe some records this afternoon. >> good morning, everybody. it's saturday, 6:00. i'm jenelle wang. thanks for joining us. this morning egypt's prime minister appeared on state tv suggesting that the crisis might be settling down over there. he appeared confident a resolution with anti-government protestors might be reached without the middle east removal of president mubarak. thousands of protestors continue to gather. they met with egypt's prime minister yesterday to discuss ways to ease mubarak out of office but all is not calm. an explosion today at an egyptian gas facility is blamed on sabotage. the blast sent up a massive fireball at a massive gas

terminal on the sinai peninsula. the fire was controlled by closing down valves on the gas line which feeds into israel. plus a missing google executive has become a spokesman. he joined the initially protest in cairo. his family believes he's in the custody of government officials. lillian kim has more. >> in cairo streets, peaceful protestors took back control. tens of thousands of egyptians gathered to pray. >> it will not be resolved through violence or suppression. we are encouraged by the restraint that was shown today. >> yet despite the calmer atmosphere, concern is mounting for google exec lyle gonye. he's head of marketing for the middle east in north africa. he took part in the protests in the very beginning but hasn't

been heard from since january 27th. he's believed to be in the custody of the egyptian government. he worked with gonye two years ago. >> i don't have a very high opinion of the sort of human rights standards they have over there. that makes me sort of worried. >> the leading opposition group has since named his as symbolic spokesperson in hopes it will pressure the egyptian government to release him. according to al-jazeera, his family has been called by his captors saying gonye is being taught a lesson. >> you know it's from the right place and he was working for the betterment of his people. >> back on the streets of cairo, protestors vowed to continue the rallies in president mubarak is gone. muhammad albardi made this plea. >> he should hear the clear voice coming from the people.

and leave in dignity ooh lillian kim, abc 7 news. >> bay area demonstrators continue to show their support for the egyptian people. today is declared an international day of mobilization and solidarity with the egyptian and tunisian resolution. they will stand in solidarity at a 1 p.m. rally and march in san francisco's u.n. plaza. the event at market and 8th streets will include live interviews with the journalists on the grounds in egypt. there will be calls for the u.s. government to step up support for the egyptian people. san jose state's hockey team is off the ice amid accusations of alcohol abuse. the complaints against them could put their entire season in jeopardy. players, parents and coaches held a closed-door meeting last night to discuss the situation. thomas roman reports from san jose. >> the san jose hockey spartans,

parents and coaches left the closed-door meeting at the ice center. neither the team members nor their parents would answer any questions. they discussed the indefinite suspension the team has been given. it all came about after the team received a couple of calls about the team abusing alcohol while in uniform. >> this does involve alcohol. and all of our club sports, team members are fully aware that alcohol and team sports don't mix at san jose state. >> this is the spartan hockey team playing last march. harris would not say when, where, or how the alcohol was consumed, whether it was when the team was on the road or during a game. coach john glasso was elected by the parents to speak to them. he didn't want to say too much. >> we'll do anything needed to look into any allegation. i'm not sure what the allegations are. >> he repeated several times he didn't know why his team was

suspended. he thinks they'll be cleared of any charges. >> we believe it will be. and i'm sure the players, i'm confident the players will be exonerated from the allegations, whatever they may be. >> the team was supposed to play against san diego. no one is sure when the team will play again. a junior at state, he says he was looking forward to watching his first san jose hockey game. >> yeah, it was going to be my first san jose state game i attend. so a little bit disappointed. >> the team is supposed to host the national division finals this march. now they don't know whether they'll be able to play in them. the university tells us that this investigation will take anywhere from two to three weeks and if they find wrongdoing by any of the players, those players could be expelled. in san jose, i'm thomas roman abc 7 news. >> oakland police chief anthony batts says he's staying on the job despite some frustration about budget problems making his

job more difficult. chief batts future has been in doubt since he evealed he was applying for the chief's job in san jose, a position he didn't get. yesterday he joined oakland mayor jean quan at a briefing in oakland. >> the reason i came to the city is try to make a difference for the community and the community responded and asked me to stand by them. that's what touched my heart. >> his decision came after meetings with top city officials that throwled to a deal to rehin officers laid off last summer. 10:00 police chief mike massoni will join others at linden avenue. they will walk along 8th lane where a december shooting left three young men dead and juveniles wounded. they hope this day of healing will lead to a community center and mentoring programs for young people. milpitas police have released

sketches in three possible kidnapping attempts in the past two weeks. the latest suspect is accused of trying to grab a 17-year-old girl yesterday morning near the high school. he's described as hispanic, 20 to 30 years old, 5-8 and physically fit. here's a couple of sketches of the other suspect. he's accused of trying to lure two girls into his van on separate occasions and exposing himself. we have a link on our website under "see it on tv." he's accused of mutilating dogs, cutting off their ears and tails claiming to be a licensed veterinarian. there's a statewide search for a man that is hurting animals. these may be disturbing. lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> the ear has been literally cut off. this ear should cover the ear canal. >> anna is a three and a half-month-old pitbull. she and her brother had most of

their ears cut off. this is what anna looked like when officers found here two weeks ago. >> the stitches were holding the flesh together along here. and it was a monnafillmeant fishing line. it's senseless. this is his business card. he claims to be a licensed vet who can do ear cropings and tail docking, what veterinarians opt to do for cosmetic purposes. this doberman's tail was cut off and its ears taped to popsicle sticks post-surgery. they went to his home yesterday but couldn't find him. this neighbor didn't want to be identified but says he's heard nonstop barking from his house. >> he's not a dog that he's claiming territory. it's a dog under stress.

platform were not effective. the hackers were just looking around but could have sinister intentions including financial gain, trade secrets or be a national security threat. target is paying the state millions of dollars to settle a lawsuit over how it throws away things. the los angeles times reports that target will pay $22.5 million but admits no wrongdoing. prosecutors accused target of pouring returned or defective merchandise, including paint and pesticides down drains, throwing it into trash bins, even donating expired food to a food bank. target will have to train employees how to properly dispose waste. palo alto-based facebook.com may be moving a few miles up the peninsula. the company scheduled a news conference on tuesday at menlo park city hall. last week it was reported facebook.com has quietly bought 22 acres of property next to the former sun microsystem campus at

everything calm. the sun officially out until ten after 7:00. a look for a pattern change in a little while. stay tuned. right now we are looking at temperatures very warm, in the low 50s san francisco. how about 64 half moon bay. still upper 30s from the delta to napa. 43 redwood city and fremont with calm winds there. and we are looking really at all our surface temperatures, surface observations with the calm winds but higher elevations already employing wind gusts 50 mph at mount diablo, 20 to 30 mph north and east bay hills. that's why we have a wind advisory and the temperatures 27 degrees warmer half moon bay. on average though 3 to 8 degrees warmer from yesterday's reading. a warmer start, warmer finish and on our way to a very warm weekend. windy in the hills tonight and tomorrow. record highs are likely north

and east bay. no rain for the next seven days. there is a wind advisory that goes into effect 4:00 this afternoon until 10:00 tomorrow morning. north winds will be gusting from 25 to 35 mph. that's a sustained wind. gusts over 45 mph even into the santa cruz mountains. so that will aid in our warming but it's also gonna provide some hazardous conditions if you're doing hiking, running, biking or even just hanging out today. it will be -- look out for some of those downed trees, some of those loose objects. can be very windy in the higher elevations. double barrel high pressure continues to strengthen and the flow around the high, that will be looking for a few high clouds to spill over that ridge from time to time. but overall the ridge stays strong right on through the weekend. high temperatures tomorrow will be even warmer. mid-70s on average all around

the bay and that will bring us up just a couple degrees from today's reading. 70 santa clara, 70 milpitas, 73 los gatos. numbers at the coast, mid-60s, 66 pacifica with 70. palo alto and mountain view today. san francisco coming in at 69 degrees. average 3 to 10 degrees above the average today everywhere. maybe a record here in santa rosa, 74. sausalito 65, 68 hercules with 70 castro valley. we could see another record around oakland today topping out around 70. in our inland valleys, remember gusty winds here, 72 pleasanton, 69 pittsburgh. 72 gilroy. here's the seven-day forecast. the warmest weather tomorrow but overall this weekend we'll see the warm weather and day-to-day we'll see temperatures drop back a little bit. the winds kicking up and then we'll see hopefully a pattern change but not until the late period of the weekend. so i guess we have to enjoy it.

russian foreign minister in munich. the treaty each sided to about 1600 strategic warheads down to about 2200. leaders of anti-government protests say they held talks with egypt's prime minister to discuss ways to ease egyptian president hosni mubarak out of office. thousands of protestors continue to gather. word of talks between the prime minister and protest leaders comes on the 12th straight day of noisy demonstrations, clashes and violence in the streets of cairo. still mubarak refuses to leave immediately. egypt's prime minister suggested on state tv this morning the crisis is settling down and might still be resolved without mubarak stepping down right away. while president obama has not called for mubarak's resignation, he's urging him to do the right thing. >> the future of egypt will be determined by its people. the transition process needs to

begin now. that transition must initiate the process that protects the universal rights of the egyptian people and fair elections. >> u.s. diplomats are trying to convince mubarak to release power to that transitional government backed by the military until elections can be held this september. health insurance giant blue shield delays plans to raise rates by as much as 59% earlier this week but now there's outrage from critics over something else. that's after mu shield hosted a $100,000 fund-raiser for the speaker of the assembly. nanette miranda reports from sacramento. >> after weeks of public outcry over rate hikes of as much as 59% of individual health insurance plans, blue shield finally agreed to delay the move this week. now critics can calling for sacramento to bring in company executives and demand an explanation. >> probably the largest rate

hike in california history for health insurance. i think there's no question the legislators should hold hearings, subpoenaing the ceo of blue shield. >> saying he's just as outraged as the public, the assembly speaker insists he plans to hold hearings. >> we absolutely are. i think you see our health committee already starting down that process. >> the health committee chairman's office says there are no firm plans, let alone a hearing date, leaving some to question how committed he is to holding blue shield's feet to the fire, particularly after the insurance industry threw him a $100,000 fund-raiser last week at this sacramento restaurant. that's his car and driver waiting outside. >> he either needs to give back the money or he needs to hold hearings very quickly because the specter of impropriety is great. >> when i asked about the fund-raiser, he said it's not a factor. >> yes, we can be fair. it's not only the assembly's role into the oversight by the senate's role.

>> the speaker's going to be very aggressive protecting the consumers first. >> you may recall how to justify under oath a 39% rate hike. the company later with drew it. >> have you no shame. >> the question is one that is disappointing -- >> blue shield and the head lobbyist that put together the fund-raiser was never returned. the clock is ticking for the legislature to take any action. in sacramento, nanette miranda, abc 7 news. >> in other news this morning, concord's mount diablo school board may put off next tuesday's final decision which of three schools to close down. on friday steven lawrence notified parents the board may instead look at a new option that hasn't been discussed. the district has gone through

the painful process of narrowing down the decision which three of the seven schools should close. they discuss a new option to see if they can achieve the savings without the controversial closure. tuesday's meeting is expected to pack the gym at mount diablo high school. auto makers and their dealers have had a rough three years. dealerships closing down, car makers needing government bailouts. but now they're no longer grimacing. "moneyscope" reporter david louie explains why. >> you can see it in the new sign over norman din's chrysler in san jose. analysts are projecting sales could hit 15 million vehicles during the recession sales plunged to 9 million. the ceo of chrysler is in san francisco to talk to 17,000 auto dealers and the vendors who supply them. he's hoping the turn-around has traction. >> we need to walk before we start running.

we cannot believe our own press. i think we learn the hard way from a number of things. i don't think we should be repeating mistakes from the past. i know chrysler agree and i'm sure my other friends are as rigorous as we are. >> they will invest $500 million over the next five years to support the dealers. that boosted optimism. craig's group operates 100 showrooms. >> you can feel it in the attitude. there's more excitement. better product, exciting place to be today. >> the national automobile dealers association is setting up a large exhibit floor at moscone center. >> the auto loans are very low right now. the average interest rate is about 6% and you have a fleet of cars that's actually ten years old. the average age of the fleet is ten years old. so you do have demand. >> a potential snag could be rising fuel prices and supply of

>> the source of water for nearly two-thirds of the bay area is undergoing a major overhaul. several key projects of the retrofit will begin this year. it's a carefully choreographed construction project giving water officials opportunities to go places they haven't been in decades. in this morning's assignment 7 report, dan ashley shows us an exclusive look inside this

amazing system. >> this pipeline was built in the late '60s to meet the growing demand for water along the peninsula. it carries water for more than a million people. the pipeline is seven stories below the surface and no one has been inside it to inspect it since the water was turned on more than four decades ago. until now. >> this is the service from 1967 and hasn't been inspected since. >> blake is the lead quality insurance inspector on this three mile stretch of pipeline returning along highway 280 in san mateo county. >> we're inspecting water system infrastructure that rarely gets inspected but is so critical to the population that you rarely have the opportunity to get inside and check on 'em. >> this tunnel was carefully walked by engineers and water officials looking for anything that may affect the flow or quality of the water sent through it. >> signs of distress in the

concrete lining that might be indicated by cracks. might be indicated by leaking water. >> this can be dangerous work. the communication is by radio (horn) >> and an air horn letting everyone outside the tunnel letting everyone know inside is okay. unseen dangers, the air quality is constantly measured for dangerous levels of carbon monoxide or possibly explosive gases. a high-powered fan forces air through the opposite end of the tunnel to keep the water out during the inspection, every valve supplying water to the tunnel is turned off and locked until everyone is out of the tunnel. >> the opportunity for the fspuc to asells the condition of this tunnel is a rare opportunity. >> and an opportunity made possible by one of the largest water infrastructure upgrade in california history. >> since the 1920s water from yosemite national park has

provided 2.5 million people in northern california with some of the most pristine and valuable water in the nation. it is an engineering marvel managed by the san francisco public utilities commission. but here's the deferred maintenance and old construction techniques of that made the system vulnerable in a major earthquake. in 2002, san francisco voters approved a bond to pay for their share of repairs to the aging system. it will be paid back over time with increases in water rates. some of the largest projects are ramping up to start this year. >> we're going to be probably dedicating a project a month for the next six months. >> ed harrington heads up the fspuc and the $4.5 billion to upgrade the water system. it includes replacing pipes over san francisco bay with a tunnel, a new dam, and upgrading water treatment facilities. >> we have $2 billion under construction right now which is really pretty amazing when you think about it. >> the goal is completely

no pattern change yet but i think it's coming. so stay tuned. outside right now, beautiful shot with some high clouds there. and the skies are basically clear. we'll call it partly cloudy. the winds beginning to pick up in the higher elevations of our east bay hills. it will also pick up in the north bay hills as well as the santa cruz mountains. so beautiful day today with the sun setting after 5:00 and we'll see the atmosphere retain that heat so tomorrow should be warmer than today. 52 degrees, san francisco. temperatures with some of the breezy conditions in the 60s at our coast. 50 antioch. cool numbers though. napa and the delta 37 degrees. at the surface winds are relatively calm but the higher elevations, i talked already about the gusts. 24 hours ago we were much cooler, as much as 5 degrees cooler in redwood city so starting out with a lot of warmth this morning and temperatures peak tomorrow. windy in the hills, north and

east of the hills tonight into tomorrow with records likely in oakland, santa rosa and perhaps the county. no rain for the next seven days. the wind flow coming out of the north. that favors the downsloping winds. north bay mountains, east bay hills, santa cruz mountains. the sustained winds 25 to 35 mph. gusts could be over 45 mph. i just checked mount diablo and they do have wind gusts beyond 50 and 55 mph. so with that the atmosphere is very, very dry. relatively humidity in the single digits. and we are looking for this dry weather pattern to continue. high pressure in the great basin also building into the eastern pacific and rotating around the high, a few serous clouds. you may notice those high clouds from time to time but overall the strong ridge stays in place throughout the weekend. it will begin to weaken a little bit into next week but temperatures today, most areas in the 70s. i think everyone will see 70s

tomorrow and that should be our warmer day of the weekend. so if you're planning anything today, gotta plan on lots of sunshine with temperatures in the low 70s for the most part in the south bay. 72 in saratoga. peninsula at the coast, the cooler numbers. but not bad for early february. 66 in pacifica, 71 redwood city. san francisco warming up to 69. numbers anywhere from 3 to 10 degrees above the average. 72 for you in sonoma. 68 vallejo. right now the oakland hills reporting some gusty winds but downtown later on this afternoon, 70 degrees. same deal in fremont and out over the hills look for 69 in pittsburgh with 72 pleasanton and down by the monterey bay. monterey checking in at 70 with salinas 74 degrees. here's the accu-weather seven-day forecast. warmer today, tomorrow, gusty in the hills. slightly cooler monday. still breezy with temperatures trailing throughout the middle

here are the winning numbers from last night's $12 million megamillions draw, 6, 20, 29, 48, 55 and the meganumber 6. nobody correctly picked all six numbers. tuesday night's jackpot is estimated at $19 million. now to a unique exhibit in san francisco. gowns and costumes made entirely out of paper. arts and entertainment reporter don sanchez takes you to the legion-honor. >> they look like fine works of textiles from the feathering and painting. all made of paper. necklaces, head pieces and all of the shoes. stunning in their detail. for the belgian artist it began with making paper costumes for her children 20 years ago.

now it's much more involved. >> it's difficult at the start but you play with the paper first. you have to place -- you change the aspect of the paper. >> she works for the team creating the piece. they shape the design and she paints it. >> as a painter, i look at the fashion. i look at the painting. i look at the fabric. >> after they arrive here, the pieces have to be shaped and ironed. she finds inspiration in classic paintings. this became this. this is the first time all her work shahs been shown together in this country. she was inspired by four european paintings in the region of honor collection. >> this is more than fashion. and i do not want anybody to say, oh, this is just no show fashion at the fine arts museum. this is fine saturday and that's what we do here. >> they're not meant to be exact copies. close to impressions actually.
