it turns out many of the foods that we thought were fine may just have too much salt including some of our favorite snacks. does losing the salt mean losing the taste. are we doomed to cardboard crackers. >> reporter: they're one of the original american processed foods. >> i'm out of wheat thins. my life is officially over. >> reporter: when you think about it, it's remarkable that people are still tweeting about them. >> wheat thins and football! >> reporter: when wheat thins hit the market in 1947, chuck yager was breaking the sound barrier, old blue eyes was singing that "old black magic." fast forward to the '80s, they were still a hit snack but they

seemed so very healthy. >> remember sandy duncan. >> reporter: they were wheat and they were thin and that was all before salt became a four-letter word. they decided to embrace the news. in addition to wheat thins, they make just about snack food you love. from teddy grahams to planeters nuts. the usda issued guidelines saying we shouldn't eat more than teaspoon of salt a day. doctors say it contributes to heart attacks and diabetes and risk of stroke. that puts the tasty wheat thin under siege. kraft executives said they're undaunted. >> we're reducing the sodium. we're increasing the whole grain content. going to 100% whole grain.

18% reduction in sodium and still the great taste consumers expect from wheat thins. >> reporter: really? we went to kraft foods campus and asked them to show us how they planned to do that. >> it's a snack. we know that snacks aren't necessarily healthy. they're good. why do you need to change anything? >> everything little bit helps. it's a great opportunity to help people in their goal to eat healthier overall. >> welcome to our cracker development lab. >> reporter: of course they have a cracker development lab. it was a little like going inside willy wonka's chocolate factory. this is the place where they come up with the secret recipe. >> this is the whole grain blend. this is the sugar, starch, baking powder here. >> reporter: and a little bit of oil. >> this is where you're going to form really the structure of the dough. >> they removed the much

maligned the high-fructose corner syrup. now they're after the salt. >> sodium is found in three different ingredients here. one salt is a dough salt and it's used to flavor the biscuit. there's a leavening salt to make it rise and expand when you bake it. >> reporter: wheat thins like most scene of that accident are good because of a delicate balance because of sweet and salty take out one tiny ingredient. >> it can really impact the texture and flavor. >> reporter: all right, number two. so, how do to reduce the salt without reducing the treat? they have been working on it for three years. lot of trial and error. it's good. they won't say how much the effort has cost them. they mix seven main ingredients. rolling out the dough from one

big ball of smashed down to cracker flatness. to stamp, cut out and bake. four minutes in an industrial oven and then -- no. needs a little salt on there. proof they do need some salt. just not too much. they agreed to show us how they do it. this is a perk for the employees at kraft. they get to taste all of the products before they go on the shelves. today, we're tasting two samples of wheat thins and we get to rate the intensity of the flavor and the texture. one batch. then, another. very nutty and crunching as you can tell. are tested by a panel of tasters. employees who volunteer. >> quite crisp.

very crunchy. >> it's a very delicate balance to get the sodium out, to get the high fructose corner syrup out. what's left. >> we're looking at reducing fat, reducing sugar, reducing calories in our products. we're looking to add beneficial ingredients. >> reporter: does that all are deuce the taste? that's an important of the equation. it's a constant balancing act for us. >> reporter: in fact, kraft has pledged to move 10% of the salt from all of those scene of that accident you love. >> in 2010, we removed sodium from about 350 products, that's 6.5 million pounds of salt, enough to fill 100 million salt shakers like this. >> reporter: in the works, lower salt graham crackers, fig newtons, peanuts and barbecue

there has been a spike in attacks by both elephants and tigers in the past year claiming hundreds of human victims. so, why is it happening? here's jeremy hubbard. >> reporter: imagine living here. tigers who developed a hunger for humans. killing 14 in this village in india alone in the last year. elephants on the rampage, taking out 200 people a year. >> ten years ago the forest covered india by approximately 20%. now the's down to 4%. along with that, billion people live in india. they're having their habitat destroyed all over this country. >> reporter: he's a zoologyist who traveled to india wondering why the uptick in human deaths. he caught up with dave last week outside of toronto.

>> that's enough. >> so the reality is, these things for the most part aren't -- >> tigers aren't it's anomaly when these animals start eating people. >> reporter: they're unstoppable and unavoidable at 6 a pounds and up to 11 feet long. they have overrun one of india's islands where humans were once safe. >> i feel like i'm being hunted. >> reporter: tigers hunting humans. in one place the village of widows. four men from one family have been killed. >> it's one of those places that made it hit home. these people are living turned constant threat of being hunted by one of these. the rules of that xhur in my

mind don't exist there. >> from what i hear, this is how the guys get attacked. sitting out here at night can't see anything. can only hear the waves crashing. pretty simple for a tiger to sneak up and grab you and take you. >> reporter: many experts believe that global warming has shrinked their habitat. they go after humans because it turns out we don't put up much as a fight. in another remote stretch of india, another peaceful animal, the elephant is going after humans. >> we're chasing this one. this one didn't move. this is absolute suicide right now. >> reporter: 19 people near this village died trying to protect their farm fields from the hungry creatures. villagers live under the nightly threat of their homes. people are little competition.

as dave showed us, the elephant's entire body is a weapon. >> if you hurt her baby, she would probably hit you with this truck, break ribs, bones, get you down, she would take this part of your her truck and she start stomping you. >> reporter: just flatten you? >> no chance. you can't hide from her. you can't get away. >> reporter: villagers chased them away. even young children get into the fray. fireworks detonating. all they do is anger the animals. >> this is a recipe for death. this herd has been pushed the last half-hour. fireworks all over the place. kids all over the place. an animal this smart will feel, you give this sign for a reason,

they'll turn around and use all of their physical strength and start killing people. we're in a terrible situation now. they're so scared. the babies are getting tired. moms coming back to protect them. that's the danger. these kids have no idea how dangerous this is. those elephants will have them in seconds. let's go, get in the car! stop, stop, stop! go, go, go! i was petrified when i was there. i either get trampled to death by this elephant or starved to death. >> reporter: they can't be killed, although these guys are at wars with elephants and they're chasing them out of here every single day, they also prey, elephants. >> reporter: wild life specialists did get permission to kill these. everything we know about

elephants, is turned upside-down. she was a man-eater. consumed human remains. >> it seems like the common denominator with all of these animals was, moms, saying don't mess with my kids. or, you're going to die. >> something that everybody can relate to. i think in the tiger's case, if you're going to live in this area where i'm raising kids you're on the menu. the elephant's case, it was very much you're pushing me past my level of comfort. >> reporter: the only long -ter solution to find room of their own. not likely where the population of a country has exploded to 1.3 billion people. the conflict will only escalate in the oldest battle of all, the fight for survival.
