and actually the storm was a little too much to get up there. didn't want to drive in that mess. so it was nice having this nearby. >> we wasn't expecting to be like this. we thought only like a little snow. but it's like tahoe. >> lisa: that means bay area drivers who aren't used to the snow are hitting the mountains. this man's car got stuck in the snow. >> we dug and people came and offered to push. including the very helpful sheriff who pointed out i shouldn't be parking there. >> caltrans trucks started plowing the roads overnight. when the fresh snow started falling. it's barclay let up since. the heavy snowfall has forced crews to shut down two mountain areas, including empire grade, and the portion of highway 9 at bear creek road. the dangerous driving conditions w. just in the mountains. this driver hydroplaned off highway 17, down the side of the road and flipped over into a

creek. emergency crews had to repel down the embank. >> the victim was trapped in the seatbelt. we pulled him out. >> lisa: the driver suffered only minor injuries. highway patrol is not calling in extra officers but they are focusing on highway 17. lisa amin gulezian, abc-7 news. >> alan: we are get something incredible weather pictures from our viewers inch the santa cruz mountains, this is the snowy scene on skyline boulevard from heather. up north in lake county we got this beautiful photo. jim says they received a foot of snow in clear lake over the past two days, something he hasn't seen since before 1972. and susan turnbull forwarded this picture from clear lake. susan says they picked up five inches of snow last night. you can send us your photos or

videos, or just e-mail them to us at you report at kgo -- tv.com. >> back home a downed tree closed piedmont avenue in berkeley. crews were called in to clear he road at the intersection at channing way. they had to use chain saws and a mulcher to get the road open again. we're getting plenty of rain, too, and not just unusual for rain to fall on the san francisco's annual chinese new year's parade. hundreds of thousands are expected to attend. at it getting underway right now, and we're in the thick of it. tomas is live around the parade route. >> reporter: we're in the tick of it. this is a very noisy celebration, very noisy new year celebration. we're here at second and market. just about stopped raining. the parade started 45 minutes ago.

as you can see behind me there's still a lot of people waiting to go up the parade route. this parade dates back to 1858 in san francisco. organizers expect close to a million people to come to san francisco to celebrate, even with all this rain and cold weather. more than 5,000 people participate in this celebration each year. many of them since children. there are 26 floats and lots and lots of marching bands, and of course fireworks. at it the year of the rabbit but the actual calendar year is 4708. we spoke to many people, some coming from as far away as hollywood, who braved the rain to celebrate. siena wong tells us how to say happy new year in cantonees. >> i expect to see the

sierray it snowed for a fifth straight day. travel was difficult because of the weather combined with the number of people driving up during the presidents day holiday. here's more. >> reporter: there's this old saying, you know the one what a difference a day makes. well i suppose seeing is believing. yesterday, eastbound traffic on i-80 was night may. chain controls, hour-long stops. today, mother nature was a little bit kinder. >> it was four hours to get here. we took off at 6:00 a.m., and there's still a lot of traffic. >> reporter: they came to the sierra all the way from san jose, to do what thousands of others did or attempted to do. >> this is the best time -- best weather i have had so far. >> reporter: like all the others the resort was packed with those capitalizing on the eight feet of snow our last storm dropped. >> right before president's week en got everybody excited. >> reporter: the crowd left at

>> closed captioning brought to you by mancini sleepworld >> alan: a mother and children are being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. the three victims were taken to stanford medical center for evaluation and they're expected to be fine. meanwhile, pg&e is investigating whether a malfunctioning wall heater may be to blame for that leak. in oakland, two early morning shootings left at least two people dead. what happened in the the hotel near the oakland airport. there are two victims, one in critical condition. officers tried to lock down the though but hat trouble communicating with their radios.

>> the other happened at 2:00 a.m. on hilton street. police were called to a car that had its rear window shot out and when they looked inside two bodies were inside the car. no word on emthe victims' identities. >> prosecutors say a former investigator has acknowledged stealing and selling drugs. he was arraigned on 28 felony counts including drug possession. he did not enter a plea. welsh's attorney said his client fell into debt after his daughter required a bone marrow transplant. another map is facing the same charges as welsh. >> after all this wet weather meteorologist leigh glaser tells

>> alan: scientists have completed the first cosmic census and the numbers are astronomical. there are 50 billion planets, scientists estimate 500 million are in the zone where life could exist. the numbers were calculated from nasa's plan -- planet hunting telescope. leigh glaser is just keeping track of weather. >> leigh: a series of storms moving through. the last of the series is going to make its way through tonight. and live doppler 7hd you can still see the moisture that is out there, and as we go ahead and spin this, you can clearly see the rotation around this is counterclockwise, the low center is here, and the showers rotating from east to west. so we're not quite out of it

yet, and you can clearly see the white, even the pink shading on the map. this is where we're picking up the snow, mt. hamilton, the higher elevations near the santa cruz mountains. how much rain have we had? over an inch and a half in san francisco, an inch in redwood city, an inch in oakland lesser amounts towards the north bay. and then a little more tonight before the system sags to the south. a cool day today. 42 in sack for -- san francisco. and los gatos, 41 degrees. here's a look at the highlights for the evening and beyond. showers overnight. remember that snow level above 2,000 feet. we'll deal with the morning rain drawps tomorrow and look for afternoon clearing and sunshine, and then there's a slight chance right now of a few more showers on monday. this is actually the low we just showed you on live doppler 7,
