as much as six inches in some peaks. the berkley hills, a light dusting. grizzly peak at 1700 feet. not a ton of snow, but enough for a snowball fight and mount diablo, a lot of people took advantage of the extraordinary winter conditions, we have more from lisa in the south bay. (laughter) >> the sound of utter joy excould e echoes. the ones creating the excitement is the snow. >> the they just have to experience, and still, it's cold stuff. >> my kids are excited to come up here. >> around 3000 feet it was impossible to miss. sanborn skyline county park was covered in it. >> we were supposed to go up to tahoe this week and actually the storm was a little bit too much to get up there.

and didn't want to drive in that mess so it's nice having this nearby. >> we wasn't expecting it to be like this. we expected a little snow, but tahoe is buried. >> bay area drivers who aren't used to the snow are hitting the mountains and this man's car got stuck in the snow. >> we dug and people came and offered to push, including the helpful sheriff who pointed out i shouldn't be parking there. >> cal-tran's truck started plowing the trucks overnight when a fresh snow started falling and it barely let up since. the heavy snowfall forced road crews to shut down two parts of the mountain area, including empire grade near falcon and that portion of highway 9 at bear creek road. but the dangerous driving conditions weren't just in the mountains. this driver hydroplaned off highway 17, down the side of the road and eventually flipped over into the creek. emergency crews had to rappel down the embankment to save him.

>> the victim was trapped inside there with a seat belt, was able to reach in there and get the seat belt undone and pull him out. >> that driver suffered only minor injuries. highway patrol is not calling in extra officers for this storm, but they are focusing on highway 17. in the south bay, ab c7 news. >> all of that snowfall made for perfect conditions. you can see a lot of snow on the ground, but the roads are clear and no chain patrols at this time. it was a different story yesterday, highway 50 was difficult because of the weather combined with the people driving with the holiday weekend. skiers and snow boarders capitalizing on the eight feet of snow from the last storm. >> it started off a little snow because of chain controls, but cal-tran did a great job of clearing i-80.

police radios to fail once again during a shooting. they tried to lock down the la quinta inn early saturday morning after two men were shot inside. police had trouble communicating on radios. radio problems plagued oakland police. also in oakland, police say there's a reward up to $20,000 for information to help solve the double homicide. a 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were shot as they sat in their car early yesterday morning on 62nd and hilton street. police have not released the victims' names, the 18th and 19th homicides in oakland so far this year and that's more than doubled the number of killings over the same period last year. pg and e say that a faulty water heater is to blame for a carbon monoxide leak that sent a family to the hospital yesterday. a mother and two children complained of nausea and lightheadedness, they are okay.

can you believe it, beautiful, lots of snow and temperatures in the 30's, and the snow melting already and we have some fog in our northeast bay valley that has provided poor visibilities and some freezing conditions, very slippery, livermore and napa, 37 and still some fog in santa rosa 32, 38 redwood city, but the number is coming up, 45 in mount view, everyone was in the 30's the past couple of hours, but we are on the rebound thanks to the sunshine and we'll have it throughout the day today, that fog is going to burn back quickly near record lows tonight though, we'll see plenty of numbers right around freezing or below. then tomorrow, in the north bay, the east bay, we're going to see increasing clouds and may see a slight chance of shower and get out and enjoy that sunshine today and we have more farewell. visibilities less than a quarter of a mile, and santa rosa quarter of a mile and elsewhere

looking good. napa, your visibility has improved significantly so we're looking at numbers colder this morning. we had a lot of ice out there, the black ice in the north bay, but recovering quickly elsewhere around the bay, with numbers a little bit warmer at our coast and out by the delta, we're warming up. so, here is where we sit so far with 25 inches of rain in santa rosa, we're up to 112% of normal. san francisco 109% of normal at 17 inches of rain and a little over 13 inches almost 14 inches in oakland brings us to 113% of normal and trailing behind, san jose, but this boost, they're down to low 60% of normal and with all the rain the past couple of days, up to 86% of normal. so we've got high pressure in control today, and a few clouds around and our next weather system to the north and west of us and it's going to slide down to the south providing increasing clouds tomorrow. so sonoma county, parts of the east bay and even san francisco can see a few sprinkles and today though, everyone is pretty

now, up in the sierra it's finally cleared up after snowing as much as eight feet the past few days and this is a live look at i-80 near the truck scales there. and roads are clear and traffic there flying along. and now we have a shot from heavenly in tahoe and ski lifts in operation and enjoying day two of a three-day weekend with wonderful skiing and snow boarding weather up in the high country. the snow brought people outside into the south bay as well. drivers made a trip up treacherous highways in santa cruz to catch a glimpse of the unusual weather there. >> signs on highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains warn of slippery road conditions. the concern here is black ice which could catch drivers by surprise. earlier today the only concern some children had, what to do in the snow. and the avenue along skyline boulevard was filled with the sounds ever excitement in the santa cruz mountains some

>> welcome back to abc 7 news. the a live picture, a sweeping view of the bay, blue water, blue skies, one of the reasons for folks back east are really, really jealous of us right now. a gorgeous day in store for this three-day holiday weekend, and if you have a chance to get out there, get out there because it will be a little chilly, but you won't have to deal with umbrellas and other type of rain gear for is sometime. look at that, fantastic, mostly clear clouds, a little fog here and there, but that's part of the territory. look at what could soon become the pentagon's newest weapon, the hummingbird. we've seen what the unmanned drone aircraft can do.

and now a robotic bird that can hover without the enemy knowing. here is abc. >> this hummingbird won't soon be landing on the back yard bird feeder and the flight path could one day take it overseas, called the nano hummingbird, a pocket sized drone and soon could be a powerful weapon for the pentagon. >> this is the first aircraft that's been developed that flies with two flapping wings. >> watch the box in the upper left as the bird takes flight outdoors, flapping its robotic wings, what it sees, the pentagon will see, powered by batteries, the bird becomes a sort of bomb. spying as it flies. indoors, it would appear to be a bird is an agent with better than a bird's eye view, 360 view. the pentagon spent 4 million dollars building the birds, fly forward and backward, hover, land on a phone and cable line by remote control, watching over someone without them ever knowing.

they are far smaller and more discrete than the drones increasingly used by the pentagon and cia. earlier this year, our exclusive look from the air force base in california as they operated the drone some 8,000 miles away offer afghanistan. >> that's what you're watching. >> we met with the two-man teams behind each drone. the obvious difference they carry hell fire missiles and the hummingbirds cannot. and what the bird can do, fly over an enemy's shoulder and the troops can carry those birds in their pocket. the devices have the wing span 6.5 inches and some 300 wings. weigh less than an aa battery, barely an ounce. flying just 20 seconds now they're in the air for ten minutes. >> this is going to have a very short range, short endurance. >> and while the pentagon is developing the hummingbirds, they will not say when they'll be deployed. ran is gone and chilly, and

degrees at sfo. so, sunny and cold in morning with north and east bay fog. near record lows tonight once again and the number is at or below freezing so keep that in mind. it's going to be another cold one. slight chance of showers comes our way tomorrow and looks like the forecast models are bringing this area of low pressure closer to the coast. so, the visibility has been less than a quarter of a mile from livermoore, nevada, santa rosa and partly cloudy today. a look at the picture and a ribbon effect of these clouds off shore usually indicates the cold air, he so that cold air, cumulus still off shore and the next weather maker upstream and rainfall totals so far, above normal from san francisco to san jose, and actually a little below normal with about eight and a half inches of rain and everyone else in between, above normal since the week's worth of rain anywhere from three to eight inches of rain across the bay area in the past week so

come to the chinese new years. >> we like it because we get to see the different floats and kids get to see the different people and wave out like they're, you know, rock stars or something. it's fun, everybody is screaming at you and they have a good time. >> the parade lasted about two and a half hours and capped two weeks of chinese new years events. and in china this morning, an adorable baby panda starts the new year in a new home and moved the baby and mother to a nature preserve. you're not seeing things. those are the handlers, dressed up as pandas, and wear the costume so the baby panda won't develop relationships with humans and transition. and if they do well they'll be removed to a remote part of the reserve. prince william and bride to be kate middleton sent out invitations and reportedly invited 1900 people.

>> welcome back to abc 7 news, this is a live picture from the abc studios on front street towards the transamerica pyramid as well as some of the financial buildings along the embarcadero, one of the places we did not see snow although we showed ayou a lot over the course of the morning, a couple of blue skies and puffy white clouds in downtown san francisco. if you own a burglar alarm you may know about the fines many cities impose for false alarms. in san francisco, there's a fee just to own a burglar alarm. one couple found out they were not only paying the fee, they were overpaying. 7 on your side has the story. >> crystal has one alarm system in her san francisco house and so she wondered why was she getting two bills. >> and the city, they both charge. >> first, the city sent this bill for $45 to cover her annual

alarm license registration fee. then another invoice came, this one from bay alarm, demanding $55 for what it called a city alarm permit. it sure seemed like two bills for the same thing. so, she called bay alarm. >> and i even said, well, i think i paid this before and they're like, oh, no, you have not paid for this. this, you have to pay. >> chris couldn't get any answers from bay alarm or the city about the reason for two bills. so, she contacted 7 on your side. >> it just sounds like there was some confusion there at some point. >> that city treasure jose, he says that by city law burglar alarms must be registered with the city and there's a $45 annual fee. and it's meant to hold home owners accountable for all the false alarms that were going off, tens of thousands each year. now, owners can be fined. >> the number of false alarms

has dramatically decreased which just means that our emergency responders are more free, more available to take care of real emergencies. but kristin shouldn't have to pay two fees so the treasurer looked into her case and found by mistake, there were two licenses issued for her one alarm system. and bay alarm obtained one license, the other was in the name of kristin's husband rodriguez. >> it's puzzling and he doesn't actually believes in alarms in the first place and that's the funny thing. >> she says her husband doesn't recall ever registering the alarm, still, they've been double billed for the past three years, so right away the city refunded the duplicate payments and she was delighted to receive this check for the full $125. >> good, i'll be able to use it. i'll definitely go out and get a glass of wine or something, one glass of wine. >> it is still a mystery as to how christa's husband got into

bear, a 20 pound terrier disappeared on tuesday. brian did not think he would see his dog ever again, but a woman found bear and took the animal to the humane society in tacoma washington. and he drove 13 hours as soon as he got the news. >> somebody picked him up, he had a name tag on with phone number and his name. and microchip to track down brian. nobody could figure out how bear got to tacoma, one thing for sure he got a ride from somebody along the way and lisa is here with one more look at your weather. >> very dramatic out there. dramatic improvement from yesterday. and also, what a dramatic shot from mount tam. you can see the clouds and beautiful snow that's melting out there under 40 degree temperatures now. mid 50's later on today and tomorrow, increasing clouds with slight chance of showers and then we'll keep it dry through early thursday and then another cold wintery system. >> we'llen joy it and muddle
