checking around and realized, some of the friends said they thought they went rafting in the creek. >> reporter: rescue teams searched, a search that spanned more than ten miles in the creek in the late morning, four miles from where the pair started, crews found a piece of blue plastic. it was the raft. then miles north in cork cork cork cork -- carbon the first bd then the second body. >> it was treacherous, especially in the morning when we got it. the water was too high, too fast-moving, too dark, low visible. we couldn't risk our search and rescue people and also the -- some of the officers to go in the water. >> they were both students at las lomas high.

neighbors who live along the creek are too familiar with this tragedy after a teenager was killed in this same stretch a decade ago. they lobbied to have these danger signs painted. now they say maybe something more needs to be done. >> they start in walnut creek and then get caught here, and this is where the undertow is bad. >> i said to my husband, someone is in the canal with the helicopter overred head. >> one of the boys lived in the city of walnut creek, the other lived in an unincorporated parent. both parents reported them missing after midnight after they spoke the friend and realized their sons made the decision to go rafting. abc-7 news. >> alan: the bomb squad jumped into action after a suspicious item washed ashore in san francisco. you can see police detonating

whatever it was on the beach. the u.s. park police suspect it might have been a navy flare or some sort of signal device. the device was sported this morning, and rangers roped off the area until it was destroyed. the fort attracts a lot of dog walkers and hang glider. >> the storm left behind some gorgeous vistas. look at the pictures we shot from sky 7hd. this is mt. diablo, still capped with a layer of snow 12 to 15 inches deep. so many people went there today that park rangers had to close it. in marin county, there's still plenty of snow. the gates to the state park there opened at nook today, -- t noon today, and there was a throng of snow lovers waiting to get in. >> some kids have never seep -- seen snow. >> what do you think? >> it's hilarious, they're falling in the water.

going to leigh glaser. >> leigh: we thought we would check in with live doppler 7hd. it's been very active for the past four to five days. not so much right now, getting a little break. here's a look at some bay area higher peak snow accumulations, the past 24-36 hours. tam has four inches, diablo, six inches, mt. hamilton, as much as six to ten inches of snow. santa cruz, five inches, and monterey, higher elevations, five inches of snow. monday through saturday, these are rainfall totals. lohman, close to seven inches. close to four inches for san francisco. same holds true for oakland. three inches for concord and napa, and a little over four and a quarter inches for santa rosa. more rain is in the forecast. we'll take a look at that in a

little bit. >> alan: poor conditions may wipe out plans for the surf contest at mavericks. the contest is an invitation only event and surfers from around the world are given 48 hours notice before a big swell is expected. this year only five or six swells have hit the area, and none have been big enough to produce the world class mavericks waves. the window for mavericks closes february 28th, week from tomorrow. that's when this year's permit expires. >> alan: in washington, congressal leaders say they're determined to avoid a government shutdown. although the rhetoric is easing in washington, the for of wisconsin predicted his state would lead the way in weakening public employee unions cross the country. >> reporter: outside the wisconsin state capital sucks bad weather reduced the ranks rf

>> alan: we are getting news that an earthquake struck on russia's pacific coast a few hours ago. it measured 6.2. no injuries or damage have been report it. the quake struck near the peninsula. it happens to be much closer to japan than it is to moscow. some big tech news. the stanford news service is reporting a major energy breakthrough. researchers have found a way to triple the efficiency of solar power cells by adding a thin layer of organic poll ciewlz that are better than traditional cells for turning sunlight into energy. it's a nano meter then, ten thousand times smaller than the width of a human hero. a chemical engineering professor presented her research in a

conference in washington, dc today. >> on to weather, leigh glaser, all that winter rain and snow. >> leigh: kind of moved out. a nice day today. working up to lots of sunshine. we also had all that dense valley fog to contend with. you can see from the high definition east bay cam looking over the bay we still have a few high clouds drifting over the bay area, in association with a weak system centered to the north of us that will swing very close to the bay area in the next 24 hours. we thought we would check in with live doppler 7hd, and no returns right now, so a quiet afternoon for the bay area. current temperatures, already in the 40s. san francisco, 49. 50, half moon bay, napa, 50. 49 in livermore. and we're seeing plenty of sunshine in antioch. with 51 degrees. here's a look at the highlights. another cold night tonight with inland temperatures near or below the freezing mark, and of

course that could contribute to some black ice forming out the and also inland frost. we'd look for clouds to thicken up tomorrow morning, and a chance of a few drops in the north bay tomorrow morning, and then tuesday and wednesday, we'll keep it dry but we'll still have to contend with cold morning. here's a look at the clouds drifting over the bay area. let me widen this out a bit. you can get a sense that some of these higher clouds starting to drift in our direction. this is the low that we have been keeping a close eye on. not sure if it's going stay off the coast but that's exactly what the forecast models are suggesting right now. and you can see as we work through the evening, we'll go with clear skies. then the clouds move in just in time for tomorrow morning, 5:00 a.m. timewise, and then you can see this low. by 10:00, still most of the modify off the coast, off the coast, 6:00, 7:00,, 9:00.

most of the moisture stays to the west, and they were tomorrow night we'll start to see clearing. clear skies for much of the evening, which means temperatures will really drop. 29 for cloverdale. frost in napa. 32 there. 32 in livermore. 40 for san francisco. 46 for san jose, and then tomorrow morning when the clouds start to rush back in. highs for monday, go cloudy in the morning and then break -- bring some of the sunshine out by late in the afternoon. 55, san jose. campbell, 56. at the coast, very close to the area of moisture, just off the coast, so look for cloud thrvmentz half -- clouds there. san francisco, mixture of sun and clouds. north bay, 52 for petaluma. 53 for napa. east bay, oakland, 54. 54 for fremont. interior east bay communities, that's where you'll see the sun.
