overtaking some government buildings, burning them. and the fact they made it to the capitol gives you an idea how serious the situation is. for the first time since the uprising began six days ago, they're no longer confined to the second largest city benghazi. they're able to get into the capital where moammar gadhafi has been running the government for the past 40 years. and violent clashes between the forces have also escalated. so libya is the next country to watch. peggy and rob? >> now, lama, gadhafi has been in power for 40 years. the question that many people are wondering is will he leave? >> reporter: well, there are reports that he has left the country. although his son saif al islam on tv overnight said he remains in libya and is leading the battle from there. there's no way of confirming that he is still in the country at the moment. but as i said, there are reports that he's already left. will he actually step down so far, the indications are no.

he will not give up power yet. as you rightly said, he's been in power for more than 40 years. and saif, his son, on tv said, we are not tunisia or egypt, comparing the country to what happened recently in those countries with the deposing of their leaders. saif said that the armed forces are with him, with his father. tens of thousands are here to be with him, he said. and they will fight for the last man, the last woman and as you said, the last bullet. peggy, back to you. >> of course, we're seeing democracy brewing in other countries. even extending far into china as well. what's the next country to watch, let's say, in the next day or two? >> reporter: well, that's what everybody is asking, but as you rightly said, they are spreading. we're seeing more and more demonstrations in yemen, morocco. we were just talking libya, bahrain. i questioned a libyan professor who said to me that this is the

time for people to come out on to the streets and voice their opinions. there is a momentum here because people have been emboldened by what happened in tunisia and egypt. they are beingg to see more and so you're going to see more and more demands for reform, demands for freedom in countries, especially here in the middle east and in the persian gulf as well, which is where there are protests in bahrain continuing. so we are going to be seeing more of these. >> all right. lama hasan this morning live from cairo, thank you. and shifting gears now, another major winter storm is pummeling the upper midwest today. minnesota's bearing the brunt of it. by the time it's all over, more than a foot snow will be on the ground in the twin cities. the winds there hitting up to 40 miles an hour. some areas are also getting slammed with freezing rain and ice as the storm moves east. >> reporter: hundreds of flights were cancelled in airports in

minnesota, michigan and illinois as the winter storm blew through the upper midwest, delta air lines canceled 700 flights out of the minneapolis/st. paul airport sunday. slippery road conditions led officials in several states to advicvise people to stay off th road. >> people were stopping for the red light. couldn't stop. so i sped out to avoid them and hit a snowbank. >> reporter: on i-94 there was a string of accidents and cars were left stranded in the snow. >> it's slicker and slicker. >> reporter: snowplows and salt trucks in michigan had a difficult time staying ahead of deteriorating road conditions there. >> i have four-wheel drive. so it was okay. the distance that i made. but without my four-wheel drive, it's pretty much -- >> reporter: only skiers enjoyed the weather, making the most out of this fresh snow on this presidents' day holiday weekend. >> it's important to go get it while we have it. >> reporter: the national weather service has posted winter storm watches and warnings from montana to new

england, a distance of more than 1,800 miles. as the storm heads to the northeast it is expected to taper off. major metropolitan areas, washington, philadelphia and new york city may see some snow and ice, but it should change over to rain later in the day. >> a rough winter continues. for the rest of the morning's weather from around the country. about 8 inches of snow in detroit. rain changes over to snow in chicago. up to a half foot of snow from buffalo to erie, pennsylvania. several inches around philly, new york, hartford and providence. showers from washington, d.c. to memphis. rain in the pacific northwest. snow showers in the northern rockies. meanwhile, 40 in boise, 48 in seattle, 49 in salt lake city. a frigid 15 in fargo, 25 in minneapolis. 31 in the windy city. 37 here in new york. 80 in miami, 70s in new orleans and dallas. time is running out to avoid a federal government shutdown. congress is off all this week. when members come back, they'll have just five days to reach a budget deal that would avoid a shutdown on march 4th. over the weekend, house republicans passed $61 billion

in spending cuts, but that's unacceptable to senate democrats who want a short-term funding extension. meanwhile, it remains to be seen if teachers in wisconsin will go back to work. their union chief is telling them to return to the classroom instead of protesting at the state capitol. classes have been canceled for days as the protests against the spending bill drag on. the state employee unions are upset about that spending bill because they say it strips away most of their rights. wisconsin's governor said it's a way to fight the deficit. over the weekend, bob woodruff met protesters on both sides. >> reporter: we met lou d'abbracio early in the morning. 110 miles away from the capital. lou is a small government conservative, eager for his voice to be heard in the debate. >> many of us in the private sector have had to sacrifice. i think necessary that we all share that sacrifice. it goes home for me. my wife is a teacher.

of the women being held hostage. two west point cadets are back on steady ground following a dramatic nighttime rescue a cliff 500 feet in the air. the cadets were stranded on the mountain side during a training exercise and then spent eight hours teetering on the 18-inch ledge above the ravine. a police helicopter carefully lifted the men to safety as winds topped 30 miles an hour, they both suffered hypothermia but otherwise are okay. a news crew from the fox affiliate in sacramento was attacked as they cover a murder investigation. a camerawoman taping the murder scene outside of a restaurant, suddenly, she was knocked to the ground by angry friends and family. the victim who gathered at a makeshift memorial. she was shaken up but thankfully, not badly hurt. well, criminal charges could be filed against the student at oprah winfrey's leadership academy in south africa. police say the 17-year-old student secretly gave birth last week. the newborn's body was later discovered in a plastic bag. the statement from the academy
