i'll show you coming up. >> good saturday morning. it is chilly this morning. 8:00. so let's check in with meteorologist lisa argen who is tracking the storm and cold temperatures. >> see all the sunshine behind me. mainly we're talking a clear sky or partly cloudy but after dozen records have been broken or tied. 26 in santa rosa and 28 in napa. 33 in san jose. moisture, where is the snow? we do have a little rain-snow mix east of pescadero. highway 35, highway 9 and certainly south of monterey. the weather service at about 400 feet reporting a few snowflakes. it's flying to the south and east out of the bay area. the best chance will be this morning along the coast. issues get set for another cold night tonight and more rain next week. >> thanks so much. >> lower elevations around the

bay area caught some snow flurries around twin peaks and the heights neighborhood but the snow is sick go in the highest elevations. john alston is live from santa cruz county. >> good morning. right now the sun is finally up as opposed to the last time we met. the clouds are coming in. yes, it's already on the ground. this is skyline boulevard and highway 9. we are at the 3,000 foot level. i'm guessing as you look on the ground, i think it's maybe a quarter of an inch of snow. that is started around 2:30 to morning according to crews i talked to who have been making the rounds with plows and sand. at about 5:30 this morning, we saw a young man putting on jane, he is from west san jose. he says he was up all night and came up to see the snow and the

sunrise. >> it's snowing, that usually doesn't happen in san jose so i decided i wanted to see the sunset. >> at what point you needed the chains? >> probably when i started slipping on the roads. yeah. you know, the car kind of wobbled a little bit and i wanted to make sure i was safe. >> reporter: as you can tell the roads are slick. they look slick but watching some of the vehicles around here the sand on the road is adding to the traction and i've not seen anybody in an uncontrolled slide but one was being a hotdog did a couple donuts, but traction seems to be okay. also in the san jose area, we want to mention some warming centers, ten of them have been set up in san jose. they start at 8:00 in the morning and go until noon. those are underway and that there be today and tomorrow because of the cold weather.

live in the santa cruz mountains "abc 7 news." >> caltrans is taking the stormy weekend very seriously. they are calling for the personal of sfloe snow and ice in emergency situation. road crews are working 12-hour shifts around the clock on busy mountain roads like highway 17 and skyline boulevard. crews have been dealing with things with downed trees. >> we're going to have trees coming down. if something happens, don't be a hero. >>. >> snowplows are ready to be lowered if necessary. as john mentioned, warming centers opened up. national guard centers have been opened up, staying open longer to provide a warm place for homeless people to spend the night. >> there is plenty of snow on mount hamilton, but they are warning to you stay away for your own safety. quite a people trekked up to the

mountain to see the snow firsthand. here is karina rusk with the story. >> when the snow didn't come to them, the enthusiastic and impatient went to the snow. >> we decided to come out and play in the snow for the day. >> mount hamilton is like a magnet pulling people to its peak from the valley floor. >> it's getting very cold. we hang out. >> hanging outcomes only after hanging on. braving the windchill at 4200 feet is nothing compared to braiflg 19 miles of a narrow and winding road. >> i was scared the whole way. i was holding on to the seat the whole time. >> at lick observatory what looks like tire play is a safety hazard. last several mile stretch to the top is university of california property intended for research, not crowds. >> no ambulance service up here. oftentimes no cell phone service. like today we don't even have

welcome back. demonstration in san francisco will show support for the libyan people and their struggle for freedom. thousands of people representing groups had a rally in u.n. plaza followed by a march. in washington, president obama has signed an executive order freezing assets of libyan leader of muammar khadafy and four children. the sanctions apply to the libyan government. mr. obama says the sanctions are necessary because continuing violence in libya poses a threat to national security. protestors demanding his ouster when militiamen fired on protestors. the stait space shuttle discovery will do some maneuvers before docking with the international space station. the shuttle will do a back flip when it gets 600 feet from the saying. they want to get a good look at

francisco and san jose tying their old record. it was 33 earlier in san jose and now up to 37. 38 in mountain view. 34 in los gatos. half moon bay, 37. south of half moon bay we do have some precip but look at numbers, still freezing in napa and yet another night of cold weather. we are beginning to close the door on this storm system that brought the heavy rain yesterday. temperatures all over the place. anywhere from 15 degrees colder than yesterday. so the cold air mass has settled on in. here is the moisture. we're looking at north of pescadero. light rain showers off the coast. heavier cells and that is where most of the activity remains. a little close you see the rain-snow mix around ben lomond. further south around the weather office in monterey and around carmel, you are looking right there at the pink and white. that is about all we can do for

you in terms of the snowfall this morning. this area of low pressure continues to sag to the south throughout the morning hours. that is where the precip will go into monterey county. we are still looking at the winter weather advisory for another hour and a half for the santa cruz mountains with about an inch of snow below 1,000 feet. for skyline boulevard, dusting and icy roads, hazardous driving conditions. back home, you saw the showers mainly along the coast. freezing cold temperatures throughout the morning hours. next hour or two and once again tonight. our east bay valleys will look at freezing cold as well as the north bay valleys. keep that in mind, keep the pets in and bring in those plants or cover them. the area of low pressure sick go to the south. cold air is still with us for another 24 hours or so. temperatures today will be very cold, as much as 15-18 degrees

below the average. tomorrow will be just a little bit better than that. we're getting all the moisture out of here as this area of low pressure moves out of area within the next couple of hours. if you are headed towards the coast. that is where you will see the black ice, slippery roadways, but in terms of high temperatures, just peaking in the 40s and 50s in most neighborhoods, 50 in palo alto and oakland. we'll call it partly cloudy and here down by the monterey bay, look for more clouds and maybe some wet weather. a snowflake or two. icy roadways around gilroy. then we'll see temperatures back to the mid 20s to around 30 tonight, increasing clouds overnight sunday so we could see rain as early as monday. that continues into tuesday and wednesday. bigger storms are back to normal temperatures but still more rain headed our way. >> ten degrees warmer makes a difference. >> yes. >> in sports, st. mary's will

from highway 9 and 39. >> you better bush rurb if you want to see it. sun is blazing and the snow is starting to melt. you might see the branches behind me which had a little bit of snow. that snow is now gone. this is highway 9 and 35, we're at the 3,000 foot level at santa cruz mountains. the snow area is still here, came about 2:30 in the morning, quarter inch of snow. caltrans was out earlier making the round with plows and sand trucks. you could see a glaze on the road but the sun is now coming up. a lot of that snow is going to last much longer as it warms up. we can see a lot of people showing up to take advantage of it. we bumped into a gentleman from cupertino and his dog rescue that he picked up back in june for their first romp in the snow. >> just came up to see the snow. i come up here a lot. i ride a bicycle or motorcycle.

i didn't think a motorcycle was a good idea with the slippery road. >> i did slip and slide in a jeep coming up today. >> reporter: well a lot of that slipping and sliding is going away as the sun comes up and melts whatever ice was left on the road. however, i do want to caution you, certainly up in the mountain areas because of the trees and shaded areas that the roads may still be icy and slippery in some of the area where there is shade but we're finding right now, where the sun is blazing a lot of snow, not much of it, quarter inch is now quickly melting. live in the santa cruz mountains john alston, "abc 7 news." >> this morning, the icy conditions caught caused some driver's to slip off the road. this is mare island bridge on 37 in va vallejo. they have signs warning that the

connector was closed due to the slick conditions. just over the napa county line on american canyon road, ice is blamed for a rollover accident as you can see right there. that one occurred just before 6:00 a.m. >> there is no on mount hamilton but officials are warning you to stay away because it's dangerous. melting snow could refreeze into black ice. if you get into trouble there are no turnouts and spotty cell phone service and it's difficult for emergency vehicles to make it up the road. >> it's pretty windy, no ambulance surface and oftentimes no cell phone service and like to the we don't even have electricity. >> scientists were only able to work yesterday with the help of the generater. >> construction crews are in the crucial stage of the bay bridge project. you can see cranes laying some of the final pieces of road bed

along the section of new span. next week the fourth segment of the suspension tower will be put into place, bringing the height up to 480 feet. only 45 feet to go after that. segments will be lifted in round the clock open praigs lakes due to begin on monday. >> san francisco is a city filled with neighborhood parks, some are more clean and vibrant than others. a lot of them have to do with volunteers. a new effort kicks off today in a community that desperately needs the help. carolyn tyler reports. >> there are 225 neighborhood parks in san francisco. many have been adopted by community groups. but there are 11 in bay view hunters point that no one has looked out for. >> many of the parks that we come to admire have great and other things. >> the fourth behind parks 94124

welcome back. you are looking at a live picture of interstate 80 at truckee scales. if you are going up to ski this weekend, this might be a good time to go. sun is out and roads are open. chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires to the nevada state line. >> they were closed with all the winds and blizzard-like conditions yesterday. >> today and tomorrow might be nice day to go. >> sunny and weather is unpredictable. we are looking at a cold weekend because of a clear conditions and cold air mass over head. saratoga gap you can see a quarter of an inch on the ground at about 3,000 feet.

elsewhere around the bay area, it is sunny out there but some of those cold air cumulus clouds continue to pop up. north bay, see a dry day. we do have a chance of showers elsewhere around the bay today. they will be showers because the air mass is slowly warming. live doppler 7 hd shows the moisture offshore. we had a few showers around pescadero and rain-snow mix getting close to 280. you see the activity continues to south to the east and south. we put in motion and down by monterey and carmel, that is where we're getting moisture continuing throughout the late morning hours. 32 in napa and 37 in redwood city as well as san jose. from the north bay to the south bay we saw records broken for freezing cold. this will continue again tonight as this morning we are still about 4-15 degrees colder than we were yesterday. the cold air mass is in place

and we will allow for the moisture to continue sink outside of bay area. there is monterey. there is highway 1 with a little bit of rain-snow mix down there. but for the most part energy continues to sink to the south. an area of low pressure so a chance of showers in the south bay. also, i think along the peninsula throughout the morning hours. a slight chance in the east bay. north bay remains sunny. cool, high temperatures, freezing coal nights tonight for our east bay valleys and north bay valleys. we definitely have a freeze warning for numbers dropping into the mid 20s tonight to around 30 degrees for hollister, salinas and north bay valleys. not out of the woods in terms of the freezing cold air mass. here is a look at the bigger picture. sinking down to southern california, not a lot of moisture left with this area of low pressure. so this will continue to head out. air mass will mod tomorrow.

this low will take the moisture with it. so what is left will be around the peninsula, san jose, elsewhere, though the temperatures maybe go in the upper 40s. sunny the north bay. partly cloudy elsewhere. 50 in oakland. at least 15 degrees below the average. right here we are looking at shower activity. maybe a little rain-snow mix throughout the late morning hours. 50 in gilroy. the most part, most of activity is offshore. we are looking at a warming trend slowly but then the tradeoff will be, we're seeing more moisture come our way. heavier rain throughout the middle of the week but highs, mid and upper 50s and lows back to the 40s. >> that is what we normally see this time of the year? >> yeah. >> a mills college professor has won the nation's highest award for a teaching app. she wanted students to follow a

path in mathematics. here is lyanne melendez with the abc morning salute. >> that is right. >> she probably wouldn't have been here had it not been her math teacher. she was given a second chance to solve a math problem. >> i was very puzzled how my classmates could do it and i couldn't. i couldn't believe it. so i went to the teacher later. i won the local math test for the first time. >> that day the teacher told her what comes from within you can take you very far. she gives that advice to all her students. >> you can tell she knows it all backwards and forwards.

>> it's what you are bringing it forth a certain way and lot easier to that tackle further problems. >> reporter: she has taught math at mills college in oakland for nearly 12 years. during that time, math major at mills had more than doubled. in 1998 she founded a berkeley math circle, meant to engage students in a fun and exploratory way. >> what we are doing, using methods that work. you have the movement. >> reporter: but she would like to see american students become passionate in math like in bulgaria. teachers are highly regarded and appreciated. >> the central government supports the math circles by compensating the teachers for doing the circle. >> in 1987 she represented her country in the international

math olympics. at the time held in cuba. the american team made up of boys was impressed. >> there are two girls on the same team? >> a decade later in 1998, the u.s. finally sent a girl to compete. melody wood. guess who trained her? >> i'm very proud to say i trained her. she went on to win two student medals. >> reporter: today wood is doing doctoral work at stanford university. she has inspired other students, katie was a student and want of her teaching assistants. she also tutored high school students. >> college bound high school students. i started tutoring them. they understood the way that i can help them and see the light bulb come in.

workplace, my brother-in-law and my aunt. >> debt collectors made at least 450 phone calls in just a year and a half and they didn't stop there. >> the issue was, they were calling the neighbors and families to embarrass him and pressure him to repay a debt. >> but they say 80% of the clients come in with collection harassment issues. that is twice as many than the university of santa clara clinic saw before the recession. >> creditors are being much more aggressive and calling people frequently as soon as a consumer is late, maybe as much as seven days late on making a minimum payment. >> she received her first phone call at 6:30 on the morning on thanksgiving. >> it was thanksgiving day. >> stacy laughs about it now but
