snow in the bay area. lisa amin gulezian is live at twin peaks. >> lisa: we're here at 900 feet, and you didn't have to be this high to sigh snow overnight. and even though we will not see another round of the white stuff, it's still very, very cold, and that has prompted a freeze warning in some areas tonight. >> well, it's snowing in half moon bay. it's not sticking to the ground. but can you believe this? >> lisa: the images came flooding in to abc-7 via you report. from the coast to the mountain tops, to the east and mount tam to the north there was snow. small flakes fell near this shell gas station in san francisco. the last time it snowed in the city was in 1976, and today,

people wanted more. >> i was hoping it was going to snow. but it's not raining so not a chance. >> lisa: instead the sun came out but the air was crisp. temperatures are low, which is why the city of san holiday -- san jose opened ten warming centers. this one allows anyone to come inside and warm up during the early morning hours. the bitter cold can also be dangerous for drivers. >> we're in a winter storm watch. the temperatures have been dropping. and even in the daytime hours, if the temperature drops far enough to the freezing level, you can actually have black eyes in the daytime hours. >> lisa: that is what several drivers faced today. this storm warned of icy can conditions, but it was too late,

and ice is blamed for this rollover. the cold isn't going anywhere this weekend. so it's best to just bundle up. >> the fleece, neck scarf, and rain coat, and an umbrella. >> reporter: is that enough? >> hopefully. >> lisa: that freeze warning i mentioned, that will be for the north bay mountains. parts of the east bay, and carmel valley. live in san francisco, lisa amin gulezian, abc-7 news. >> alan: in san mateo county, stretches of skyline boulevard got a good helping of snow for the second weekend in a row. this morning, time was of the essence for snow lovers to touch it for themselves before it all melted. john alston made it to the santa cruz mountains just before sunup. >> reporter: the snow experience on skyline boulevard was first

come first served, and to ebb enjoy it, you had to act fast. jan was on a make to be here at the perfect moment. >> it was snowing, and i decided i wanted to see the sunrise, and i thought it would be beautiful. >> reporter: he was delayed when the stopped to put on chains. >> at what point did you realize now needed to put on chains. >> when i started slipping on the road, and not getting enough traction. >> reporter: caltrans crews say the snow started sticking at 2:30 this morning. the elevation is close to 3,000 feet. there was a quarter inch on the ground. the dusting was enough to leave a slippery blaze -- glaze on the road, which brought out the caltrans trucks hours before sunrise. john logan couldn't resist bringing this dog.

>> he was three years old. i rescued him last june, so he's probably seen it before but not with me. so i wanted to let him play in it. >> reporter: this dusting didn't last long. by 8:30 much of the snow and ice was gone, and what was around here was melting fast in the santa cruz mountains, abc-7 news. acknowledge utility and road crews were bracing for the worst, and kids were hoping on a snow day. so what happened? i'm going to let leigh glaser handled this one. >> leigh: i have to tell you i know everyone is kind of disappointed we didn't see the snow. but colder air does not hold as much moisture so while we have the cold air in place, we just didn't have enough moisture to make it come out in the form of snow. in fact, live doppler 7hd, this is a live sweep. not picking up any moisture at all here around the bay area. you can see to the south of us,

we are still seeing some of those returns, a little bit of rain to the south of carmel right now, salinas valley, and this is the last of it. tonight get ready for very cold temperatures. last night and this morning we had cold temperatures. record lows, napa, 27, breaking an old record of 30 set in 1945. 32 at oakland airport. oakland, a new low of 34. sfo, 35. records that tied. san jose, 33, tied a record from 1897. record lows a good bet tonight. freeze warning in effect for north bay and east bay and salinas valley. protect the pets and pipes and cover your plants. >> alan: as we mentioned, we did get snow, just not at sea level. here's more documented snow sent to us.

this was taken at uc santa cruz, where there was even enough for a little local pride. we'd love to put your weather photos on the air. e-mail them to us at kgo -- tv.com. the pilot of a small plane had to be rescued after crashing near the eastern end of the dumbarton bridge. the faa says the pilot reported losing power after taking off from the palo alto airport. it flipped over and landed on the mutt -- mud flats. the pilot, who walked away, is a commercial airline pilot who recently bought the blame. the search is on for a missing man who suffers from dementia, sit schizophrenia andh blood pressure. temperatures will be freezing and he doesn't have his

medication, kenneth chin was last seen on 35th avenue. he is 5'10", 172 pounds. san francisco police say chip left his richmond district care home thursday afternoon, and he hasn't been seen since. workers say he was wearing a black jacket, long-sleeved blue denim shirt, jeans, and black shoes with velcro straps. the united nations is putting new pressure on libyan leader moammar gadhafi to step down. the latest information epermanenting -- emerging about the violence against antigovernment protest

>> alan: following deadly clashes in lib ba, the united nations held an urgent meeting to stop the shines -- violence against antigovernment protesters. they ordered an asset freeze of gadhafi's family and other key members in his inner circumstance. ban ki-moon is urging the united nations nations to take immediate action. george went to the kodak theater for a preview. >> there are events where, if it's going to rain, the whole thing is ruined, and you're in this complete panic, and the oscars isn't one of those. we're inside, and the carpet is tented. but are we wishing for a beautiful, sunny day? yes, we are. >> but for the time being, the plastic is in place so the stars can be ready, and once they make it inside the kodak theater, the show's producers plan on giving them and us something new. >> we're trying to use more contemporary technology to kind of create a canvas for the look of the show on the stage, and be able to fill that canvas with imagery as we go through the show. >> one example is that this year is the 10th anniversary of the best animated feature, so when we give out those oscars, we

itouch, and the academy awards right here tomorrow on abc-7. coverage begins at 2:00. the show begins at 5:00, followed by a post awards special. leigh glaser is here. the irony of the whole snow build up it turned out to be a decent day. >> leigh: it's cold out there. i'm showing you the high definition mt. tamalpais camera. everybody was expect expecting to see a snowman. >> alan: my kids were all set. >> leigh: there's always tahoe. it turned out to be a beautiful day, and a bit on the brisk side. temperatures in the 40s, maybe a few 50s. live doppler 7hd, all is pretty much clear for the day area. you can see a few more returns moving from salinas to carmel, and we'll say goodbye to this system. there's a chance that some of the earlier oscar festivities

may see a few drops. here's a look at the current readings. 46, san francisco, oakland, 48. some clear skies. a few clouds over san jose. 50 in concord, and 49 in fairfield. tonight, get ready for the cold temperatures. record lows expected again overnight. remember to bring the pets in. watch out for those tender plants, especially your citrus. put some covering on them. sunny and a little warmer sunday, and then the clouds thicken back up for monday. more rain due in here next week. here's a look at some cold temperatures expected tonight. 25 degrees, santa rosa. it's you're low, a new record low for you if it hits it. napa, 25. 37 for san francisco. 36 expected in oakland, and check out concord, antioch, livermore valley.

temperatures well below freezing, so it's that vemg addition, and the friends at the napa sonoma valley with the grape crops, you want to be protecting those as well. 33 for san jose, and 30 for morgan hill. this is the front that brought the rain and the area of low pressure that is bringing down that extremely cold air for the bay area, and it will continue to make its way over us once again tonight. by tomorrow, all of this will start to shift on towards the east so temperatures start to moderate a little more so on sunday, and then as we get into monday and tuesday, temperatures will rebound somewhat into the upper 50s to low 60s. here's a look at the highs for sunday, after a very cold start tomorrow morning, get ready for sunshine, maybe few high clouds, 56 for campbell. 53, half moon bay. 56, palo alto. san francisco, 53. north bay, plenty of sunshine for you tomorrow morning, and that will be good news.
