>> we're in a winter storm watch. the temperatures have been dropping. even in the daytime hours, if the temperature drops far enough to the freezing level that you can actually have black ice in the daytime hours also. >> lisa: that's what several drivers faced today. this sign warned drivers about icy conditions, but it was too late. several cars slipped on black ice, and in napa, ice on american canyon road is blamed for this rollover, ice could form again tonight if standing water freezes up. >> i'm just cold. >> lisa: this cold weather is prompting a freeze warning for the north bay mountains parts of the east bay and carmel valley. lisa amin gulezian, abc-7 news. >> alan: the santa cruz mountains also got a little snow. if you wanted to see it, you had to get up early. here's john allston who was up

were sunrise. >> the snow experience on skyline boulevard was first come first served and you had to act fast. jean was on a mission staying up all night to be here at the perfect moment. >> it's snowing, so i decided i wanted to see the sunrise, and i thought it would be beautiful. >> reporter: he was delayed for a short time when he stopped to put on chains. >> at what point did you realize you needed to put on chains. >> when i started slipping on the road and not getting enough traction. >> reporter: caltrans crews say the snow started sticking at 2:30 this morning. the elevation here is close to 3,000 feet. there was a quarter inch on the ground when the flurries tapered off. it was enough to leave a slippery glaze on the record which brought out the sand trucks hours before sunrise. john logan couldn't resist the

chance to bring text to the snow. a rescue dog he got last summer. >> i rescued him last june so probably seen it before but not with me. so i wanted to let him play in it. >> reporter: this dusts didn't -- dusting didn't last long. by 8:30 it was gone, and it was melting fast. >> alan: the chp chosed mount hamilton road because of snow billup from the past week. this is video of mount hamilton this afternoon. the peak got as much as an inch. the chp warn people not to park el -- illegal he on the road. they're handing out parking tickets. leigh glaser is joining to us explain why it didn't live up to the hype. >> leigh: we had a very cold air

mass move over the bay area. tonight a very cold night. we just didn't have as much moisture. cold air doesn't hold as much moisture as warmer, and live doppler 7hd showing you all is clear across the bay area. we're seeing a few lingering showers pushing off the coast down toward carm mel. -- carmel. tonight, the concerns record low temperatures. these were record lows last night. napa 27, 32 oakland airport oakland, 34. sfo, 35, and san francisco tied a record low of 37. san jose, 33 degrees, tied a record set in 1897. freeze warning is northeast locations and salinas valley until 8:00 a.m. tomorrow with temperatures mid-20s to mid-30s. protect the pets, pipes and

planted. >> alan: the police soms are still -- blossoms are still on the trees and temperatures across the state are expected to drop into the 30s and 20s. almond parch -- peach, plum farmers are running water to raise temperatures in the orchards. cars heading up the sierra found themselves stuck for hours. officials were requiring chains on all major mountain passes but today both interstate 80 and highway 50 are open without restrictions. as you can see from the caltrans camera at squaw valley a lot of snow but traffic is moving well. some of you are sending in your pictures. this is from lizett. it was taken last night in san francisco. if you need more proof it snowed

in san francisco, look at this shot by michael cox. he says he took this picture last night on 19th street. send us your photos or videos. on to other news. the pilot of a small plane had to be rescued after crashing near the eastern end of the dumbarton bridge. the pilot of the cessna reported losing power after taking off from the palo alto airport. it flipped over andland on the mud flats. the menlo park fire protection district sent an air rescue boat tout rescue the pilot. >> landed in the mud and obviously did a good job doing that because he appears to be noninjured. it does appear it's leaking aviation fuel and will be leaking oil, so we need to either boom it or get it

removed. >> alan: firefighters say the man piloting the plane was a retired commercial airline pilot with 30,000 hours of flight experience. in san jose, vta service is shut down after a pedestrian was hit bay light rail vehicle. i happened two hours ago on north first street and east gish road. a bus bridge is in place to shuttle passengers around the accident. the pedestrian was rushed to the hospital but authorities are not saying anything about that person's condition. >> b.a.r.t. was delayed for nearly two hours this morning. b.a.r.t. says the problem had to do with an equipment failure near the embarcadero station. trains going to and from san francisco were affected. delays eventually dwindled down to ten minutes. normal service has resumed by noontime. up next, the latest from libya. the white house aims its strongest language yet at the libyan leader. moammar gadhafi the message from san francisco, where protesters showed their support for the

security council voted to stop libyan leader moammar gadhafi's deadly crackdown on protesters by sanctioning him and his five children. the agreed to an arms embargo and a travel ban and asset freeze of gadhafi's family. there are reports that more than thousand people have been killed since protests erupted last week. yesterday, almost 200 americans were evacuated to mall tamp the white house issued a statement in response the violence. when a leader's only means of staying in power is to use mass violence he has lost hemmity mass si to rule and needs to do what is right for his country by leaving now. snow. and this is from dave and here's a vintage photo from 1968. ter are grange sent in this photo of the snow on grizzly peak boulevard in the berkeley hills. leigh glaser is here. >> leigh: we did see some flurries in san francisco. it wasn't a total washout. tonight it's going to be all about just how cold it's going to get this evening. freeze warnings out for much of the bay area, with temperatures dropping well below the freezing mark. we'll run through the expected lows in just a moment. a clear sky for much of the bay area right now. temperatures already starting to drop off. this is from the high definition east bay cam. looking out over the bay. we'll check in with live doppler 7hd, showing you no returns across most of the bay area. we're seeing a few lingering showers, and the last bit of those rain showers pushing off the coast and that's it for the evening.

temperaturewise, 45, napa. san francisco clear, 46. 47 redwood city. 45 in livermore. the good possibility of more record lows overnight tonight. sunny. a tad bit warmer for our sunday. and it looks like clouds will thicken up as we head into mid-day monday. let's put some time on the lows. north and east bay valley areas, that's where we're going to get the hard freeze tonight. 25 napa. san rafael 27. 29 fairfield. concord, 27. 27 for livermore. also we look for 30s. 37 for san francisco. 36 oakland. palo alto, 34. and 33 in san jose. a good bet that our extreme north bay communities will set new record lows tonight and we'll run through those tomorrow evening. this is the front that brought

us the rain friday morning, and this is the low that coins to move south and differently bringing in some very very cold air across the bay area. by tomorrow all of this will push off towards the east, and we'll start to see clearing. temperatures will start to moderate a bit as we head into sunday afternoon, monday, and tuesday. here's the highs for sunday. probably jump as much as ten degrees warmer from today. so san jose, 56. santa clara, 55. half moon bay, 53. palo alto 56. san francisco, you'll warm to 53 degrees tomorrow afternoon and a mixture of afternoon clouds. in the north bay, gradually start to warm a bit santa rosa 56. east bay, 55 for oakland. 55 for fremont. interior east bay, 56 for concord and danville and livermore. brentwood, 55.
