let's begin with the falling temperatures, which could turn into new record lows by tomorrow morning. leigh glaser is here with more on this cold snap. >> leigh: this morning we had about eight new records, that either set new records or tied records for lows overnight, and tonight we'll see another handfulful right now 35 in napa. 44 in san francisco. 40, redwood city. 35 in livermore, 41 in san jose. temperatures into the 20s, and that's prompted this freeze warning until 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, north bay, and east bay, and salinas valley, temperatures dropping into the mid-20s to mid-30s. remember when these freeze warnings are in effect to protect your pets, pieps, -- pipes and your plants.

serenade short. >> i'm going home and watching the movie. >> reporter: the temperature here, at 40 degrees at 10:00 p.m. it's been dropping steadily hour-by-hour. freezing temperatures could damage delicate plants. the weather service is suggesting those that can should be put inside. firefighters are concerned about freezing pipes which which break and cause damage. the homeless are also a concern. >> with the homeless and stuff, if they don't have a shelter or aren't dressed in layers, that's a concern. someone burning a fire, very warm all day, and leave it unattended, go to bed, those kind of things. >> reporter: fire officials are asking the people to make sure their heating systems and fireplaces are working properly. also to be careful for areas on the roadway where those automatic sprinkle systems that could leave behind black ice,

and check on the elderly or any other person who might be impacted severely by these freezing temperatures. reporting live in walnut creek, abc-7 news. >> alan: dozens of warming centers are opening in the south bay. ten warming centers in san jose, including this one at the roosevelt community center. they're open from 8:00 a.m. to noon, and we posted a list of all the warming centers on our web site at abc-7 abc7news.com. >> blossoms are still on the trees and farmers are bracing for possible crop damage. farmers are running water to raise temperatures in their orchards. a snowfall predicted to fall at sea level, failed to live up to its billing today, and most of it just didn't stick. the sheer novelty of anything white falling out of the sky was something to marvel out.

community center, allows anyone to come inside and warm up during the early morning hours this weekend. the bitter cold can also by dangerous for drivers. >> we're in a winter storm watch. the temperatures have been dropping. and even in the daytime hours, if the temperature drops far enough to the freezing level, you can actually have black ice during the daytime hours also. >> lisa: that's what several drivers faced today. this sign warned drivers at icy conditions, but it was too late. several cars slipped on black ice, and in napa, ice on american canyon road is blamed for this rollover. ice could form again tonight if standing water freezes up. >> i'm just cold. i don't like cold weather. report. >> lisa: the cold weather is prompting a frees warning -- freeze warning for the energy bay mountains. >> alan: in the south bay, about

a quarter inch of snow fell early this morning. drivers headed up skyline boulevard in the santa cruz mountains, hat -- had to chain up once they reached 3,000 feet. it was enough to bring out caltrans plows and sand sharks. >> i come up here a lot. ride bicycling ride motorcycle. so i didn't think motorcycle was a good idea this morning with the slippery roads. i did slip and lied a -- slide a little even in a jeep. >> alan: by 10:00 a.m. most of the snow start ted melt. we wanted to share some of the pictures sent in. this isly lizett. taken last night on john daly boulevard in san francisco. and more proof it snowed in san francisco. michael says he took this picture last night on 19th. you can send us your videos or

pictures. somewhere in the middle of the cold weather there's an elderly man who has been missing since thursday, team of 50 volunteers with search dogs combed golden gate park looking for ken chin. he suffers from sit schizophrenia and doesn't have his medication. he was wearing a black jacket, long blue denim shirt, jeans and black shoes with velcro straps. >> interstate 5 near stability -- sacramento was tearily shut up to and it had nothing to do with the weather. hundred goats escaped from a field and ended up on the freeway, causing a seven-car accident. several cars were damaged. one driver suffered minor injuries. 30 goats were killed and 100

more were loose on the highway. the road re-opened at 9:00 p.m. the plane came -- a pilot survived a small crash of a small plane today with barely a crash. the glad came down at the eastern end of the dumbarton bridge. the pilot reported losing power after taking off from the palo alto airport. they sent an air boat out to rescue the pilot. >> landed in the mud, and obviously a good job in doing that. he appears to be knopp injured. at it leaking aviation fuel and will be leaking oil, so we need to boom it or get it removed as quickly as possible. >> alan: the man piloting the plan is a retired commercial pilot with 30,000 hours of flight experience. >> vta service in downtown san

jose has been restored after an accident between other light rail and pedestrian. it happened at the valley transit station. witnesses say the pedestrian was pushing a shopping cart and may not have been paying attention before he was hit. he was rushed to the hospital and his condition is unknown. light rail service was shut down for three hours. a bus bridge was provided for commuters. the u.n. takes action against libyan leader gadhafi tonight. president obama aimed his strongest words yet at the libyan leader. >> actor charlie sheen defends the recent radio rant that led cbs to pull the plug on his popular sitcom, and we tell you >> all new oprah: the day after hollywood's biggest night we're taking over oscar's stage! [chanting] >> alan: in san francisco's u.n. plaza today, hundreds showed their solidarity with antigovernment libyans and other prodemocracy movements in the middle east. they called for justice and liberation for libya, bahrain, yemen and morocco. they called for gadhafi's resignation. >> actor charlie sheen defended his comments during a recent interview on abc's "20/20" magazine. cbs suspendedded the hit comedy after sheen blasted the show's producer during a radio interview. he referred to the producer by his birth name, which sparked claims of antisemitism. sheen argued if someone called him car loss esteves, which was his birth name ex-he would call them antilatino.

by a post awards show, and then abc-7 news starts at 11:00. leigh glaser here. record lows. let's look at the currents. >> leigh: record lows, and speaking of the oscars, it will be dry there tomorrow afternoon as the festivities get going. but it will be cold. cold night for the bay area. high definition sutro cam, clear skies but already freezing, and napa, current readings, 32. fairfield, 33. 41 in ant yoke. freezing in livermore, 39 redwood city, and 44 in san francisco. so, we had numerous record lows last night. do it again tonight. tomorrow afternoon, more sunshine, and of course, temperatures will come up a few more degrees. so a warmer day for sunday afternoon, and then parts of the day will see the rain next week. here's a look at the expected lows for tonight. you can clearly see napa, 25.

25 for accept -- santa rosa. these records could set record lows for the evening. 37 expected overnight in san francisco. 36 for oakland. 28 for antioch. 27 livermore. and i'm looking for 33 degrees overnight in san jose. this is the front that brought us the rain on friday. this is the cold front that helped to bring some of that wraparound moisture that brought us snow flurries in san francisco, this low, everything pushing off towards the south. now as the cold air mass is settling over clear sky across the bay area tonight, and this is going to bring us the record lows by tomorrow morning. by tomorrow afternoon all this will shift towards the east. there's a weak weather system to the north that will thicken our cloudss night and monday, bringing the north bay a chance of more showers as we head into monday afternoon. for tomorrow, enjoy the sunshine.

it's going to be a cold start but we warm up rapidly with mid-50s for san jose by plate the day. half moon bay, you warm to 53. 55 for redwood city. san francisco, terrific day, lots of sunshine. 52. in the north bay 54 for cloverrerdale. petaluma, chilly, but you warm up into the mid-to-low 50s. oakland tomorrow, 55. hercules, 54. interior east bay. 66 for concord and danville. livermore, warm to 56. and numerous 50s as well as you head down towards watsonville. so earnings here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. we thicken the clouds sunday night and monday, so not as cold start for monday morning, chance of showers developing in the north bay. a chance for us on tuesday, but we'll all see rain on wednesday, and then start to taper those showers off on thursday, and right now friday and saturday
