we're waiting to learn the names of the two airmen who were killed in the attack. the military says they were about to be deployed to support an overseas mission. instead, they died in a place where few would have expected danger. the attack happened just outside the international terminals in frankfurt. at least a dozen air force security personnel had arrived from england, on their way to a u.s. base in germany. law enforcement officials say the alleged gunman walked up to them, began arguing, and pulled out a semiautomatic weapon, while shouting allah akbar, arabic for god is great. nine rounds later, when his gun jammed, two airmen were dead, two more wounded. the other airmen grabbed the shooter while he continued to shout, jihad, jihad. >> we will spare no effort, in learning how this outrageous act took place. >> reporter: president obama made an unexpected appearance at the white house press briefing, to talk about the attack. while german chancellor, angela

merkel, vowed to do everything possible to investigate the incident. sources say the shooter is 21-year-old arid uka. his parents moved to germany decades ago, from kosovo. last night, his relatives in kosovo said they could not imagine something like this could happen because they said, americans are their brothers. this investigation is continuing. but as of now, officials say there's no reason to think that the gunman acted as part of a larger terrorism plot. peggy and mike? >> all right, emily. live from washington this morning. thank you. in libya, the fighting between rebels and forces loyal to mommar gadhafi is escalating. gadhafi is making good on his threat to quote, until the last man or woman. thousands filled the square in the heart of tripoli last night, waving the libyan flag. gadhafi threatened to turn his country into another vietnam, if the u.s. intervened.

and there's been a legal setback in efforts to free a cia contractor held in pakistan. a court ruled today that ray davis is not protected by diplomatic immunity in the shooting deaths of two pakistani. a higher court could reverse that decision. davis says that he acted in self-defense. the case has damaged u.s. relations with pakistan, a key ally in the war on terror. more charges are being piled on the u.s. army private accused of providing sensitive information to wikileaks. it could mean bradley manning spends the rest of his life in prison. among the charges now being levied against manning is aiding the enemy. that could have gotten him the death penalty. but prosecutors say they won't be seeking that punishment. manning is suspected of passing state department cables and important documents about the wars in iraq and afghanistan to wikileaks. and president obama has signed a temporary spending bill that will keep the government afloat for the next two weeks. it cuts $4 billion in spending. and makes no dent in the $1.6 trillion deficit. republican leaders say they are determined to chop tens of billions more in a longer-term

bill. vice president joe biden is set to begin talks with them as early as today, to work on a possible compromise. and also from washington, word that senator daniel akaka will not run for re-election next year. the 86-year-old democrat from hawaii has served 22 years in the senate. he's now the seventh senator who recently announced plans to retire. the supreme court has upheld the free speech rights of a small, fundamentalist church that stages protests near military funerals. the church claims god is punishing the military for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality. in its 8-1 decision, the court said even though its speech may be hurtful, the church has a right to be heard. samuel alito was the only justice to dissent. a california parole board now has refused to free the man who assassinated robert kennedy. sirhan sirhan spoke at length, during the hearing, expressing remorse and regret.

but he claimed not to remember shooting kennedy four decades ago. board members say sirhan did not show enough remorse or understand the severity of the crime. today marks the 20th anniversary of another event that shook the nation. it was on this day that four los angeles police officers were seen on videotape beating rodney king. the officers were later acquitted in state court, setting off the los angeles riots. the beating incident led to an era of transparency in police departments around the country. and crime is up now 19% this year in camden, new jersey. also, people there say they know why. the city, in mid-january, which is right outside philadelphia, we're talking about camden in pennsylvania, laid off more than 160 police officers. that was order despite of a budget deficit of $26 million. prosecutors say the reduction of police, more gangs and also a poor economy are the perfect storm for violence. well, hundreds of d.c.

that's helped push gas above $4 per gallon across the country. and now, americans are spending $95 million a day more on gas than just a couple of weeks ago. the economy is gaining steam in all parts across the country. a new federal reserve survey showed that growth grew to a moderate pace in 12, key regions. and the job market is picking up. many companies are beginning to raise prices as their costs rise. the upbeat assessment of our economy is helping to lift stocks overseas this morning. tokyo's nikkei average rose 0.9% today. hong kong's hang seng climbed to 0.3%. in london, the ftse opened higher, as well. on wall street, the dow gained eight points yesterday. the nasdaq, adding ten points. all right. well, there's no big surprises when apple introduced the new ipad on wednesday. except for the person who introduced it. apple ceo, steve jobs, who is on medical leave, took the stage himself on wednesday to unveil the ipad 2. the device is thinner, faster and lighter than the original.

lake city, and minneapolis. well, to use football terminology, we're inside the two-minute warning in the talks aimed at the new nfl labor deal. while the current contract runs out at midnight tonight. >> a big day for the nfl. if no new agreement is reached, the nation's most popular sport faces a very uncertain future. karen travers looks at the issues. >> reporter: both sides have been meeting here in washington for over a week, trying to avert the nfl's first work stoppage since 1987. >> want the fans to know that we're trying. and if we don't get it done, we know that we'll let them down. >> reporter: the standoff centers around two, key issues. first, money. the nfl's annual revenue is about $9 billion. the owners set aside $1 billion for their own expenses. then, the players receive about 60% of the rest. the team owners say that's unsustainable, given the economic downturn. the second issue is the schedule. the league wants to add two more

regular season games for a total of 18. the players say that increases their risk of injury. and they deserve compensation. the nfl players are highlighting what a work stoppage would mean for the economy in nfl cities. >> this is going to hurt, you know, your parking lot attend t attendants. your restaurants. your hotels. everybody in the city hurts when this happens. >> reporter: karen travers, abc news, washington. mickey rooney is sharing a personal drama. the 90-year-old star told congressional lawmakers yesterday he had been the victim of elder abuse. an emotional rooney testified that he was left powerless by a family member who took and misused his money. he says he feels an obligation to speak out. >> the elder abuse happened to me. to me. mickey rooney. even when i tried to speak up, i was told to shut up and be quiet. you don't know what you're talking about. >> now, sadly, experts say only

one in six cases of elder abuse is actually brought to the attention of authorities. well, charlie sheen says he's determined to stay upbeat while he tries to win back custody of his twin sons. radaronline captured the moment when the boys were removed from. sheen's home. they're now with sheen's ex-wife, brooke mueller, after she told a judge that sheen threatened to cut off her head. sheen believes public opinion is on his side. >> the first interview after that, i got everybody's attention. everybody's tuned in. obviously, i'm not the guy they expect me to be after that. i'm too smart for that. >> in just 24 hours, sheen managed to wrack up 1 million-plus followers on twitter. this morning, he tweeted what's becoming a mantra. face it, folks. you just feel better saying it, winning. john galliano faces in
