cruz harbor where the tsunami caused millions of dollars in damage. >> you want to be careful if you are heading toward the beaches. you want to stay out of the water today. we have partly cloudy conditions but rain is on the way. i'll have the details in the seven-day forecast. >> thanks so much. good morning. it is 8:00 this saturday morning. i'm janelle wang. here is the very latest from japan, in the wake of thursday's 8.9 earthquake and following tsunami. an explosion rocked a nuclear power plant after authorities warned of a possible reactor core melt down. it tore down one of buildings but the reactor core remained intact. four workers died and still major concerns about the reactor leaking radiation. however, a japanese government spokesperson says the pressure in the reactor is decreasing. evacuations have been ordered for 12 miles around the plant.

official death toll from the quake is 574 but local media has the numbers over 1300. at least 1100 are injured. rod nelson begins our coverage. >> as rescuers searched frantically for survivors and fires burned out of control, an explosion rocked the nuclear power plant facing a possible meltdown. footage on japanese tv showed the crumbled remains of one building and smoke spewing out of the plant. >> this is not good news. if the containment structure collapsed would mean a complete exposure of core. loss of the coolant and a meltdown. >> but there has been good news amid all the devastation. an elderly woman and a young child pulled alive from the rubble. 8.9 magnitude monster earthquake struck friday afternoon. millions of survivors are without power but many homeless.

highways and suburban streets have literally been split open. >> it all started early friday morning, 15 miles below the ocean surface. the earth's plate shifted. for those living by the coast, that led to a 23-foot tsunami. boats and shipping containers tossed around like toys. this oil refinery exploded and power was cut to the fukushima nuclear power plant. they believe it knocked out the power to the primary and back-up water pumps. if there no water, there is no cooling and that could release radioactive steam to the environment or if the water is dropped enough the core is exposed and that can cause a meltdown. >> an expert on nuclear reactors says the situation at the crippled power plant is similar to events leading up to russia's

nuclear meltdown. >> think of a car, out of control without brakes and then your radiator explodes. that is the situation, a runaway car that has no brakes or emergency cooling systems and hydrogen explosion has blown the radiator off. right now the vessel seems to be intact. the vessel seems to be intact. at chernobyl the vessel and roof blow out simultaneously. here we don't know how much core damage there is. that is the big question mark. also in the united states some people worried that a radiation cloud over their homes. we're not talking about radiation coming over the united states. >> he says the condition of the reactor core is what is critical and so far, officials say it is holding together. travelers trying to get to japan

waited anxiously yesterday. japan airlines brought a plane to pick up hundreds of passengers. flight number one left with almost 300 people on board. many are worried about friends and family back home. >> if it gets too bad they'll have something for a few hours. >> it's okay. over a thousand people have died i'm told so far. >> be afraid to go home because i don't know what a mess it is in japan. >> unfortunately i think we can making it. >> canada airport is fully operational about cleanup resumes at santa cruz harbor where the tsunami caused millions of dollars in damage yesterday. the coastguard and other agencies will hold a news

conference at 10:30 and describe cleanup operations. john alston shows us the incredible force of the tsunami as it slammed into the harbor after traveling across 5,000 miles of ocean. >> the power of the ocean put on repeat performances all day long this wave came barreling through the santa cruz harbor around lunchtime causing more damage and more anxiety. boat owners was one of the lucky ones. >> i was here all day long and watched the surges come in. you don't have any idea the power of the water until you see it in action like this. this is something a lot of people did not expect. >> harbor crews scrambled to coral the last few boats to get loose. one of them had a hunk of a dock attached to its side. it was devastating to the u.c. rowing club that lost all of the shells about 15 boats in all.

they were planning a barbecue to raise money so two students could compete in an east coast regatta. just before 5:00 p.m. they opened up the harbor that brought out boat owners checking for damage along for with a crowd of people. >> just watching the carnage happen, just try to console my friends that are leaving their boats and don't what their boat condition are like. >> 30 to 40 were damaged beyond repair. the loss is es matter at $15 million. >> there is a lot of good people out there. the harbor officers did a good job. >> all boats are now tied down. overnight, vehicles patrolled the area from the ground to make sure that no other boats broke free. >> the coastguard has called off the search for a man swept out

to sea in northern california. he was taking photos of the tsunami at the mouth of klamath river when he was hit by a powerful wave. the tide begin rising shortly after 7:30 and crested at more than eight feet. about 35 boats in the harbor were sunk can during the surge. for people with loved ones, there has been a lot of waiting and worrying as they tried to make contact. here is heather ishimaru with more. >> in fremont, she is glued to her laptop. hoping for word from her dad, she is from sendai, where the airport was wiped out. her mom is visiting family in another part of japan so her 67-year-old dad was home alone when the quake hit. she started calling when she found out what happened. >> i just called my dad first, the land line didn't connect. i tried the cell phone and nothing worked. >> this is their son ethan and

the family picture near the house. now he is not sure what is left of her hometown. >> earlier, it was just very eerie. it was very hard to see all the devastation. >> she is hoping that her has gone to an invasion center and will call as soon as power comes back on. she believes his house was not in the tsunami's path. >> to go to sendai airport, to figure out where they go and see where my dad is. >> in san francisco's japantown, he is waiting to talk to his wife who is visiting relatives. >> she was due back in sunday, we don't know. i was going to call the airlines and ask, i figure there is enough going on there right now. we'll hear this afternoon i'll make a call home. >> jordan's daughter stayed home

a group of japanese firefighters are training here and you can imagine their interest to get home. wayne freedman shows us how they are reacting to disaster. >> when the fire protection district trains squads from other places they try to make it real, but preel real took on a new meaning. >> when mike returned from japan he and his fellow firemen will be doing there what they did here and conceivably with the people at menlo park. >> we got the news around 10:00. >> an interpreter told us the men are frustrated that of all the times to leave japan for training. they pick the week of the worst natural disaster in memory and they are long way from home. >> have you talked to her? >> no. >> is she okay?

>> i don't know. >> there is quite a lot these firemen don't know including how they will get back or how soon. nobody knows anything like that. until they do get home this the best way to spend their time, a scheduled final day of training with weeks and probably months to follow. >> going through the farmland, we just couldn't see anything. >> i've never seen such a big tsunami. >> one other interesting note about those firefighters, when they come over from japan they pay their own airfare and they pay for the class. originally they planned to do sightseeing in san francisco before going home. now, they want to get back as soon as possible. wayne freedman, "abc 7 news."

>> one of san francisco's oldest japanese restaurants is donating some of the profits to the victims at the earthquake in japan. all four ibiso locations will donate money to disaster relief. they are trying to reach family and friends in japan. they are anxious to assist in any way. here is the owner's son. >> we're going to take $20,000 out of all four restaurants and donate to it disaster relief. >> they hope to raise $20,000. they have been in business for nearly 30 years in san francisco. it has two restaurants in the sunset district. one downtown and another at the airport. >> the earthquake was so powerful it permanently moved japan's main island by about eight feet. it also sped up the earth's rotation making the day a little

shorter. it shifted the earth's axis. there has been dozens of aftershocks, the largest 7.1 that is bigger than the loam a ma prieta. the tsunami finally reached chile last night about 21 hours after the quake. there was some evacuations there but very minimal damage. you have a little bit of an update on the tsunami. >> within the last few minutes, the tsunami advisory was cancelled for our coastline. we have a fairly pleasant day ahead. we have partly cloudy conditions and bit of sunshine. we have a live shot from the roof camera. you'll see the blue skies and also clouds. i'll tell you when the rain is on its way. >> also next, the warriors play the wildest game of the season and attempt to come back from 21 down. do you believe in magic? had a larry

>> we have a really good day ahead and great news of a tsunami advisory was cancelled. it's so pretty around the bay area. one from mount tam looking east. you see mid-level and high-level clouds. that is coming from a storm system up from the north bringing cloudy conditions. as we head to the south bay, you'll see more sunshine with a live shot in san jose. so we'll see partly cloudy conditions as well in the south bay but it will pretty pleasant. temperatures right now starting to get in the 50s in concord and san francisco. 51 and holding on to who's, 48 in mountain view and san jose. on to the 40s, 48 in mountain view. and daylight saving time begins tonight and tomorrow morning, 2:00 a.m. and then we can expect some light rain headed our way starting in north bay tomorrow afternoon and then moving south. it's due to the storm system.

we'll get the tail end of this sunday afternoon. we thought we would might get some today but it looks like it will hold off tomorrow. then we look out to the pacific. we have an active weather pattern with more low pressure systems on the way through the workweek. here is how it plays out today. we have a lot of cloud cover. areas of green showing the rain mainly to the north. then about lunchtime, we'll start to see light rain, kind of peek its way through the north bay and then move southeast spreading throughout the bay area. notice it's light green so that means light rain throughout the bay area. totals really don't amount to much. we're talking tenth of an inch in the east bear and less than that in the south bay and .15 on the peninsula. north bay, we'll see up to half an inch but that is higher elevations only. so you can enjoy a day outside

if you want to go to san francisco st. patrick's parade. 60 degrees there. partly cloudy conditions in the south bay, san jose 64 and more cloud cover as you head further north, 61 in napa, 62 in santa rosa. in fact only 58 in richmond and upper 50s as well in parts of the bay area. mid-60s in gilroy and hollister. 63 in santa cruz. 61 in monterey. here is the seven-day forecast. so we hold the rain off until tomorrow. you'll need to move your clocks forward an hour tonight into tomorrow morning and have your umbrella handy all week. temperatures will stay pretty mild around the mid to low 60s. >> that is okay. if it's in the 60s, we can handle the rain. thanks so much. in sports, in college baseball, cal plays the 18th rice owls. last night the warriors dazzled their fans with an entertaining

obama turned his attention he scheduled the press conference in the first place. rising energy prices. over the last two weeks, gas prices have soared. national average is now 3.54 per gallon. >> families feel the pinch every time they fill up the tank. americans already facing tough times it's an added burden. >> to ease the pain at the pump says the president said he was ready to tap in the strategic oil reserve. >> obviously we have it teed up. this isn't a situation where it would take a big bureaucracy and several weeks to implement. this is something that would take several days. >> the president said americans are tired of just hearing rhetoric from politicians. he reiterated comprehensive energy reform. part of the reason he said is the continual unrest in the middle east including libya.

state education cuts. district did cut $3 million from the $26 million budget but the district also tapped a large cash reserve, $7 million or 30% of the current budgets. the contra costa times reports that the pay is retroactive to july. walnut creek teachers will be getting more money for healthcare benefits. >> people spent hours lining up outside apple stores to be the first to get the new apple ipad 2. there was a huge line at the apple store in san francisco. the new ipad is thinner, lighter faster tablet with two cameras. anyone who wants to buy one had to wait in line with everyone else. people that were willing to wait. they begin selling them online. i don't even know what a gyroscope does on an ipad.

first ever great white shark count is underway and number is surprisingly low. instead of thousands of sharks living off the coast, researchers found far fewer. karina rusk has more. >> for two years a team has been busy with the great white shark count. they washing in the farallon islands off of central california. a stanford university professor says that the study and photographs helped unlock the population mystery. it turns out the fin acts like a fingerprint. >> we could mark on the fin identify individuals and we've seen a shark called t.j. over

san francisco. we'll see some sunshine with passing clouds throughout the day. temperatures right now starting to get up into the 50s. 51 in san francisco and concord and even fairfield and fremont at 50. some 40s for the rest of us, 43 the cool spot in san rafael. basically we've got partly cloudy conditions. daylight savings begins at 2:00 a.m. set your clock forward an hour this evening and light rain makes its way through the bay area tomorrow afternoon. here is a look at the windy conditions in thae. it's in effect from noon to 7:00. southwest winds with gusts up to 35 miles an hour. wave heights up to three feet. if you are in a small boat, want to avoid the situation. we've got a pacific satellite image, high pressure is off to the north but the tail end is going to hit us tomorrow

afternoon. we've thought some of it might come tonight but it looks like it will hold off tomorrow. then we look out further west to the pacific and more storm systems and active pattern through the workweek. we've got rain pretty much every day this workweek. here is how it plays out. a lot of cloud cover throughout the day. the area of light green, it keeps the rain to the north end of the state. by lunchtime, we'll see light rain through the north bay first and spreading southeast through the rest of the bay area. rainfall totals don't amount to much, especially in the east bay and south bay. we're talking maybe a tenth of an inch in the east bay. .15 of an inch on the peninsula and north bay we'll see a tenth, up to half an inch in the higher elevations. so today, enjoy a pleasant day outside. partly cloudy conditions in the south bay. 64 in san jose, 65 in los gatos. low on 60s along the peninsula, upper 50s right near the coast. 60 in downtown san francisco. more clouds in the north bay

transplant and condition is too fragile to leave. cheryl jennings visited with hannah at children's hospital at stanford. >> 15 had than that is learning new things every day while she waits for a heart transplant at packard children's hospital. she is going to school inside the hospital. it's provided by the palo alto school district and helps keep her mind off her situation. >> hannah has had an operation, its procedure done for people who are born with one chamber in the heart rather than two. >> it's not working too well so she feels tired all the time. >> it needs to be replaced. two weeks for intravenous repair. >> while we were visiting, we started hannah having a reaction. she tried to be brave and tough it out. she just got worse.

it turned into a terrible migraine that required medical intervention but she is okay now. >> hannah is going to turn sweet 16 this year and best present is a new heart. she is precious living reminder of the need for organ donors. >> it's not part of the life experience. very few of us want to approach those issues unless we really have to. >> we want to encourage people to check their driver's license so we can be in a position to help others even in our own demise. >> they say the house is place where hannah and her mom can call home for as long as needed. >> i have family from anchorage for two years but they are hoping that hannah has a good outcome. >> her mom is tied to cell phone waiting for a call that will
