>> alan: a b.a.r.t. train jumps off the track in concord-sending three people to the hospital. a b.a.r.t. train headed to the airport derailed, leaving the train teetering on the tracks and passengers stranded. it happened just south of the concord b.a.r.t. station and could hamper tomorrow's commute. >> reporter: these b.a.r.t. crews are expected to be out here all night working on the problem. now just a couple minutes ago they have to throw rain in the

mix. service between pleasant hill and the bay is disrupted. getting the train off the track is part of the problem. they have to repair a portion of the electrical rail. the good news in all of this, just three minor injuries. the bad muss? -- bad news? a messy commute. >> the ten-car b.a.r.t. train looked like an accordion. the wheels of the eighth and ninth cars slipped off, leaving the train teetering on the rails. 65 passengers had to be evacuated to safety, three taken to the hospital. >> it was like i was moving back and forth. i thought maybe the tracks weren't clear. seemed like he kept on braking or something of that sort. >> that's when it stopped, and the operator went ahead and came out and said he was going to try to look at the problem himself. >> reporter: the derailment happened as see train was traveling at slow speed, just

pulling out of the concord station. crews were working on the track south of the station. the train just switched to single track mode to get around the work. >> the first train to go to single track around the work, and when it was crossing over to go into the single track mode, that's when this slow speed derailment happened. >> reporter: as b.a.r.t. investigators try to figure out the cause, b.a.r.t. riders had to frg out how to get where they needed to go. many the airport. buses ferry passengers through the portion of the line that closed between pleasant hill and pittsburg. and b.a.r.t. crews began the complicated task of rerailing the derailed train. a stretch of the track was dammed during the crash. b.a.r.t. says the fix to take all night. >> could impact morning commute. we're going to make all evidents to get this out of the way as fast as we can.

we have to preserve the integrity of the investigation. >> reporter: the investigation could be weeks, maybe months before b.a.r.t. learns the official cause of the deraille. the switch to a single track is a common moon maneuver. what is not common, is a derailment like this. minor injuries but the work is expected to go on through the night. there are buses that you'll see coming become here behind me, taking passengers to other b.a.r.t. stations. at 6:00 tonight we'll have more on contingency plans bart barret will -- b.a.r.t. will have in place. >> alan: now, we're going to see some rain tonight, and some of you may be seeing the leading edge of the front here's a live look outside. let's go to leigh glaser. >> leigh: rain moving towards the north bay right there.

in fact we'll take you in closer. those who live near novato, get something moderate rain, and then the wood acre yeah, san rafael, larkspur. tiburon, you'll get hit with this band of moderate rain. in concord, brentwood and livermore, seeing some rain also. very strong winds out of the south accompanying the system. redwood city getting wet as well. more rain in the accuweather forecast overnight. >> alan: now on to japany the dollars is -- disaster is only getting worse. officials are trying to prevent a second explosion at a nuclear plant centled last -- crippled. yesterday the concrete building surrounding a reactor exploded

after the buildup of hydrogen, and the core may have had a partial meltdown. authorities flooded it and another reactor with seawater. they're trying to avoid another hydrogen explosion at the reactor. 180,000 people have been evacuated. 160 people have tested positive for radiation, but it's unclear if it's dangerous levels. a total of six reactors are damaged at four nuclear plants. the nuclear regulatory commission says the radiation is not expected to reach the united states. california has monitoring systems in place for our air, water, and food supply. >> speaking of food and water are in short supply for hundreds of thousands of earthquake survive glors japan, and temperatures are near freezing. rescuers are pulling bodies and some survivors from the mud-covered wreckage of homes

going on. >> reporter: authorities have announced rolling blackouts. lines for water and gas are getting longer, and bare shelves are the norm. the official death toll has pushed past 1500, and there are thousands more are still missing. >> as for radiation an estimated 1500 people have been tested. of those tested, 200 are pleased to -- believed to have been exposed. this those numbers might change in the next few days. >> alan: a search and rescue team from southern california has arrived at a u.s. air base in northern jail. the los angeles county team and the team from virginia brought along thousands of pounds of equipment and 12 rescue dogs, teams in oakland and menlo park say they're prepared to go if the get the call. >> it's monday morning in japan, the start of the first day of

a couple of friend and that's reassuring. when you live in japan, you get used to the earthquakes, but nothing like this. >> my parents actually the biggest earthquake they experience. expecting aftershocks. >> alan: delta airlines says it has resumed a full flight schedule to japan. crews have now pulled a total of three boats out of the santa cruz harbor. the third was hoisted out today. 15 other boats remain at the bottom of the small craft harbor after surges from the tsunami rolled into the california coast on friday. officials estimate the damage at $17 million. one of the biggs concerns -- biggs -- biggest concerning the fuel. >> the pleasure boats don't have a lot of fuel in them. and they have booms around them to contain the fuel that is in the boats, and the salvage companies worked well to contain nearly every drop of fuel.

>> alan: iranian officials set a date for a second hearing in the trial of three uc berkeley hikers accused of spying. the head of the tehran justice department said it will be held on may 11th and will likely take place blind closed doors. they were detained in northern iraq along the irann border two years ago and charged withes responsible espionage. showered shourd was released on bail and has been back in the bay area and plead not guilty in absentia. >> state department spokesman p.j. crowell lee is out of a job. he said the army's treatment of suspected reeker bradley manning was, quote, ridiculous, counterproductive and stupid. manning is being held in solitary con finalment -- confinement and is stripped naked each night before bed.

maybe some imbedded lightning strikes as well and it's centered a little less than six miles from the golden gate bridge, a little over six miles from the golden gate bridge. it's moving rammedly towards -- rapidly towards the west so san francisco, daly city, ocean beach, get ready for some heavy rainfall, maybe some lightning strikes. east bay, concord, san san san -- san ramon, moderate rain, and lesser amounts of rainfall right now being reported from redwood city towards san jose. this band will move in, in the next five to, say, 30 minutes, make its way across the bay area, and then more rain to move in overnight. accompanying the rain, heavy at that at times. look for a chance of lingering

showers tomorrow morning, and then afternoon clearing, and then we're going to keep it unsettled throughout the period of this upcoming work week. this is the cold front, and this is the band making its way across the bay area right now. this portion will move through during the overnight hours. in fact, show you our timing. 5:00, this is a little off. but you can pretty much sense that once that band moves through, we have another actual cold front that will move through overnight. 11:00 tonight. turns over just to scattered showers, maybe a few lingering showers for the monday morning commute. a secondary storm is due in here on tuesday. to bring mainly the north bay some moderate rain at times. in the lake tahoe area, snow levels high. winter weather advisory until 8:00 tomorrow, the wind is up there as well. gusts expected out of the south close to 45 miles-per-hour over those ridges. two to four inches expected at
