crane, and a lot of patience. the same thing commuters may need tomorrow morning. >> the third rail has been damaged so it's going to take a lot of work to get everything ready for the morning commute. >> reporter: the b.a.r.t. train looked more like an accordion. at 9:20 this morning, the wheels of the eighth and ninth cars slipped off, leaving the train teetering on the rails. 65 passengers were evacuated to safety, three taken to the hospital. >> once we actually started going, started feeling weird and bumpy and shaking. >> when he closed the doors and left, i was -- it was like i was waving back and forth. >> the train was just pulling out of the concord station.

crews were working on the track south of the station. the train had just changed to single track mode to get around the work. >> and went to single track, and when it was crossing over into that mode, the slow, speed derailment hasn't. >> as investigationors try to figure out the cause, riders have to figure out where they need to go, many of them to the airport. buses ferry passengers through the portion of the lynn that closed between pleasant hill and pittsburg, a stretch that may still be closed tomorrow. >> i have no idea why, and we don't have any preliminary clues why. >> reporter: it could be weeks before b.a.r.t. knows officially what caused the train to derail. the crews will be out -- out here all night long, and if they

its way quickly across the bay area. closer, you can see the band move from san francisco now over towards the berkeley area, concord, san ramon, the yellow getting close to your area. check out san bruno and san mateo. very heavy rain moving in. oakland getting hit with moderate rain, orinda, and moss beach, half moon bay, the red indicating heavy rain. so, this is the first band that will move through early this evening. we get a little break. more rain in the accuweather for the rest of the week. >> alan: now on to japan where the nation is facing humanitarian and nuclear emergencies. the estimated death toll climbed to 10,000. more video was made available today on the tsunami.

>> alan: the newsroom with more. >> reporter: japan's prime minister said this is their worst crisis since world war ii. they have dedoubled the numbers of soldiers deployed to help out to 8,000. >> i don't know what's what's -- what's going on.

>> crews are dumping seawater into two reactors in a last-ditch effort to avoid a meltdown. officials warped of -- warned of a second exploasmghts health department is having screenings. 22 people tested positive for radiation exposure. those exposed are asked to shower and place the clothes and shoes in plastic bag. the authorities say the exposure levels pose no long-term risk to health. one survivor said he was in water. >> i felt i was dying. i was pushed into the water. but my thoughts of my family, i decided to make every effort to survive. >> reporter: nearly all the houses and buildings in the area

were swept away by the waves. in this town, local officials are unable to contact 10,000 people, half the population. >> i'm looking for my daughter. our home is gone. she wouldn't know where to go. as other family members are safe, i only hope my daughter is alive somewhere. >> reporter: rescuers are struggling to get to thousands of people stranded in areas that are inaccessible. 1.7 million households have no power. 1.4 million households have no water. roads and bridges are damaged, and 66 landslides have been recorded. in the 65 years after the end of world war ii, this is the toughest, most difficult crisis for japan. >> reporter: the prime minister also said electricity would take days to restore. in the meantime, power will be

rationed will rolling blockouts. >> alan: u.s. crews are arriving in japan to assist in the rescue operations. a disaster response team and two urban search and rescue teams have been dispatched at the request of the japanese government. one team is from los angeles. they will bring a dozen rescue dogs. al standing by off the -- also standing by off the coast is the uss ronald reagan. the deck of the carrier is being used as a staging area to deliver supplies. and the pentagon is sending a second aircraft carrier and an amphibious craft to the area. >> in a travel alert, the state department said americans should avoid tourism and unnecessary visits. despite that, flights are operating between the u.s. and japan. we caught up to several people catching a flight into the city of osaka, which was not

impacted. many of them are people trying to get home to family. >> i've been looking online for a couple of friends. have been able to find a couple of them. when youfully japan, you get used to the earthquake but not this magnitude. >> my parents the biggest earthquake they experience, and i'm expecting a lot of aftershocks. >> alan: delta airlines has resumed a full flight of schedules to japan. >> we have an update on a fremont woman who has been trying to get in touch with her father in japan. she could not reach her father, who liveness the northern city of sendai, one of the areas hardest hit. she tried calling both of his phones and sending e-mails. she couldn't get through, until this morning when her father's neighbor was able to send a text message confirming he is okay. crews have now pulled a total of three boats out of the santa cruz harbor, third was

hoisted out today, and 15 others are still at the bottom of the harbor after surges from he tsunami? japan rolled into the california coast on friday. officials estimate the damage at $17 million. one of the biggest concerns is the fuel that has leaked out of several boat engines. >> what's really good about the pleasure boats, they don't have a lot of fuel in them. they have boomed -- booms around them to contain the fuel that is in the boats, and the salvage companies worked well to try to contain every drop of fuel. >> alan: coast guard officials are enforcing a safety zone that extends in all waterways in santa cruz. it's a similar situation in crescent city. 11 boats were sunk and 44 others were damaged. debris is scattered throughout the inner harbor and along the shore. mooring has been severely damaged.

heavy rainfall pounding the bay right now. we take a look at live doppler 7hd. you see that cloud base just pulling that rain down rapidly, and you can see on live doppler 7hd, this is probably the cell right here that is producing that heavy rain. we're talking about this band from concord, snaking back towards walnut creek, down towards san mateo. this is producing heavy rainfall in a brief period of time. pleasant hills is getting out of the rain. clayton, alamo, walnut creek, this band of yellow exiting your neighborhoods. sick more -- sycamore valley road, very heavy rain moving in, going to stay a short period of time, and then moving to the east. woodside, half moon bay just fountain out of this band. check out san jose, morgan hill,

gilroy, not much in the way of precipitation, but this band will be moving into your neighborhood in the next 15 to 20 minutes. the have where -- heavy rain will turn to showers overnight. there's a chance of showers tomorrow morning, and then clearing, but really this upcoming work week, tuesday, thursday, friday, saturday right now, could be heavy at times and expecting cooler temperatures. this is the actual frontal system that will move through tonight. and we have a little heating today, and that's going to help to fire this band up. it's moving through right now. this will start to fall apart and we'll keep a chance of showers in the forecast overnight. the model is in animation mode. 11:00, lingering showers, and then through the course of tonight and tomorrow morning, beginning at 5:00 a.m., a few
