>> alan: the u.s. has launched the first tom ahack missiles against libya. the united states has officially entered the conflict in libya. 110 cruise missiles have lit up the skies skies in tripoli. here's more on operation odyssey dawn. >> u.s. missiles such as this one have fired the first salvo against libyan air defenses.

>> we cannot stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people there will be no mercy and his forces step up their assault. >> the video of a libyan war plane shot down by rebels is a preview. war planes destroyed several of the rem scream's tanks. president obama warned moammar gadhafi over scenes like this. civilians were taking casualties. >> eunited states will contribute our unique capabilities at the front end of the mission to protect libyan civilians. >> foreign air forces are expected to carry out many of the attacks. the danish fighter jets arrived at u.s.a. fighter base in sicily. >> the no-fly zone is not in effect. >> we're creating the conditions to be able to set up the no-fly

zone. >> while the u.s. is leading the front end of the attack, president obama wants america to be seen as part of a coalition, and the commander-in-chief used the words coalition and international five times each. >> alan: the u.s. is temporarily leading the coalition of nations, focusing on disabling libyan air defenses. >> back home, a noxious chemical leak caused a scare in a san jose neighborhood. residents were urged to stay indoors near a water treatment plant on gray stone alive. lisa amin gulezian is there live where residents have been given the all-clear. >> lisa: we're here at one of santa clara valley water district's treatment plants and this morning a worker noticed a tank that holds ammonia was leaking, and it holds amoanat --

ammonia that would be used in the water treatment plant. none of the ammonia escaped a secondary holding unit. still at 11:30 this morning, san jose police went door-to-door knocking on roughly 40 homes, warning residents of the leak and possible ammonia exposure. everyone was told to stay inside. >> inhaling a large amount of ammonia and having that exposure can cause your medical problems to get worse, can cause other types of medical problems such as bronchospasms and having difficulty breathing. >> anytime you see this operation, i'm concerned. normally it's a flood call or other emergency, but occasionally we do have activations from the water treatment plants, and, again, we are -- our safety protocols have

served us well. >> reporter: the warning to stay inside with doors and windows shut was lifted three hours ago. only after hazmat teams were sure no more ammonia was escaping and water district officials tell us there was never any exposure to drinking water because the facility is under construction and that means that no water was actually being treated here. live in san jose, lisa amin gulezian, abc-7 news. >> alan: thank you, lisa. another storm is headed toward the bay area. but the brunt of it may hit to our south. we're also under a high surf advisory. waves were bigger than normal on the coast today as you can see in these pictures from san francisco's baker beach. the coast guard is strongly recommending against boating, and you should avoid going near beaches or other low-lying coastal areas. there's a high wind advisory in place. for a better look at the coming

storm, let's go to leigh glaser. >> leigh: we have been having wave after wave of moisture feeding in across the bay area. the storm we're expecting tonight is well off the coast. you can already see it feeding more and more bands of moisture across the bay area. we'll take you in tighter. santa rosa, vallejo, san rafael, san francisco, wave after wave of moisture moving in. oakley reporting moderate rain, and brentwood area, from san jose south hit with a flood of rain, from los gatos to morgan hill and more of the dark green shading, indicating moderate rain. here's the latest satellite radar animation, and this is the low right here and the band of moisture feeding much -- we have numerous watches and warnings

and advisories, but looks like the heaviest weather will hit toward santa santa -- santa cruz. >> alan: people picked up sand bagz to protect their homes and businesses inch mill valley, some people bought prefilled sandbags from martin brothers supply on shoreline highway, but many city and county agencies are providing free sandbags to residents and business owners. you can fine a list of the locations on our webs, abc7news.com. >> cleanup crews stayed on shore after the storm churned up the water in the harbor. this is eight days after the tsunami from the japanese earthquake sank 14 boats. two boats are still at the bottom of the harbor. officials estimate the tsunami caused $25 million worth of damage to the dock and other

least three feet of snow on the sear. a forecasters expect at least three inches of new snow to fall through this evening. interstate 80 is open after a deadly chain reaction accident that closed the westbound lanes for several hours. the wreck involved nearly 40 vehicles and six big rigs. one man died in the crash. >> there are new fears of radiation in japan's food and water. the latest on the efforts to get a damaged nuclear plant under control. and a south bay bar owner accused of running up thousands of dollars of fraudulent

>> alan: japanese officials say the crisis at the power plant have been stablizing. crews have been dousing the reactor and fuel rods. six workers have been exposed to excessive radiation. health officials say radiation has been found in the food and water supply in tokyo. we have the latest. >> reporter: the japanese government says radiation from the crippled reactors has now reached the food supply, showing up in milk and spinach. officials say the levels are much too low to pose a danger. workers continue to hose down fuel rod at the reactor complex using fire trucks, as efforts continue to restore power so huge water pumps can take over. more than 450,000 homeless remain crammed in shelters with supplies of food, fuel, and medicine uncertain. refugees in their own country, many are stoic.

saw the flames shooting out of a building. two park police cars inside the shop were destroyed and a regional park fire truck was dammed. no one was hurt. >> the former owner of a day spa in aptos has been arrested on suspicion of credit card fraud. clients of the spa reported several thousand dollars of fraudulent credit card charges. one victim says his card was charged four separate times totaling $9,600. sanya harding was taken into custody thursday. investigators claim she also continued selling gift certificates during the holiday season even though the business was evicted for failing to pay rent. all right. let's take a look at the weather and that storm coming at us.

>> leigh: a lot of rain is due in here overnight. you can see live doppler 7, continuing to see the green on the screen, moderate rain just off the santa cruz coastline, continuing to file on in across the bay area. in fact, we have our eyes on los gatos, morgan hill, santa cruz. check out the deep dark green echos. this is denoting the moderate rain and that's what is going to move in over the next 24 hours. a whole slug of that. increasing rain and wind overnight, isolated thunderstorms for your sunday. mainly in the morning hours, and then would you believe, our first full week of spring next week, more rain is in the forecast. i want to highlight the high surf advisory in effect. with swells reaching 17 to 14 feet. monterey bay, up to 14 feet.

here's a look at the next storm system. a very strong area of low pressure here, and check out the moisture feed just all the way back, almost to the hawaiian islands. we're right here, and the latest track on this storm system has the low and the cold front moving just a little to the south of the bay area, which means most of the heaviest winds and rain will be centered south of san jose. in fact, here's a look at animation beginning at 7:00 tonight. that's not to say we're not going to see some wind and rain here. obviously we will. looks like the heaviest point will stay to the south. so by 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, we're going to see very heavy bands make their way towards san jose and santa cruz, and by 2:00 tomorrow morning, the precipitation down towards santa cruz, and most of the heavy rain will turn to scattered showers throughout the morning hours, and then start to die out by

tomorrow afternoon, by 6:00 we should start to see some breaks in the overcast, maybe a little clearing. for the bay area tonight, a wind advisory is up for southeast winds developing from 20 to 30 miles-per-hour, perhaps gusts of 45. a high wind warning, though, is in effect where the brunt of the storm is expected to move in. that is from santa cruz south, with gusts close to 60 miles-per-hour, mainly the higher terrain there. also involved with the flashflood watch beginning at 11:00 tonight through sunday afternoon, from santa cruz, points south. looking for the chance of rapid rising of streams and creeks, low-lying areas could see some flooding as well. how much rainfall? as far south as san jose, close to four inches. look for an inch and a half, maybe two inches in the higher

terrain in the north bay. winter storm warning for the tall hoe -- tahoe area. highs tomorrow in the 50s across the bay area, and we'll look for the clearing to take place late in the day, and down towards santa cruz. hopefully we'll start -- the wind will start to die down late in the day. a little after 4:00 tomorrow afternoon, spring arrives. so there you have it. more rain monday, little break on tuesday. >> alan: great weather to stay inside and watch march madness. and shu has been keeping track of the office pool. >> mike: ucla ran into a pack of gators, and the giants are worried. worried. brian wilson has aññññññññññññññ
