>> alan: good evening. i'm alan wang. the cleanup begins after a night of wild weather in the bay area. the wind toppled trees, causing a deadly accident. also ripped this sign off the side of a building in san francisco, also been some flooding today in san bruno, caltrans closed a ramp from southbound 101 to 380. and in santa rosa a tree cam crashing down. no one was hurt but a car was crushed. >> leigh: it's look at live doppler 7hd. the actual cold front is stalled

in the central valley area, but the rotation off the coast still bringing us wave and wave of moisture across the bay area. some of these producing breezes, very heavy rainfall. this cell moved from the walnut creek area. brentwood and livermore seeing moderate rain. this just push through san jose. rainfall, the higher elevations of the north bay, over three inches. mill valley, over an inch. san jose, almost an inch. i have to tell you, it was the wind last night, wasn't it? here's some peak wind gusts, occurring between 1:00 and 2:00 a.m. loss got as -- los gotas. golden gate bridge, 54. the high winds have subsided but more rain is due in here in the

next 24 hours. >> alan: as we mentioned, thousands of bay area homes are still without power after the storm knocked it out. by far the worst outages are in the north bay. 9,000 customers are without power, including 3300 in corte madera. another 115 outages are scattered in the bay area. pg&e has crews working around the clock, and many broken poles have to be replaced. it hopes to have most power restored by this evening. the storm took the life of a napa man who was driving to work when it blew in last night. john alston is live in napa near kelly road and highway 12. sounds like he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: horrible timing. behind me is what's left of the oak tree, which is six feet in diameter. now, this is wine country, and the victim is someone who

printed wine labels for a living. last night, few seconds made the difference between life and death. all day, coworkers quietly visited the spot on south kelly road where their friend was killed last night in a freak accident during the height of the storm. >> drink any wine off the shelf, chances are alec helped print the labels, and a heck of a nice guy. family man. always had a lot to say about his wife and kids and his grandkids. >> reporter: 46-year-old alex of vallejo would be alive if not for a matter of seconds. at 10:20 he was on his way to work when a huge oak tree toppled on to his suv, killing him instantly. >> chance of one in a million. >> reporter: he was left a mile away from the -- less than a mile away from his company where he was about to run the overnight shift, running a

machine that makes wipe labels. >> super nice. came from the philippines, and works here, nonstop work. >> reporter: a sister, who also works at the plant, became worried when he did not show up for his shift. she made the connection with the accident detour on her way to the plant. >> one of the coworkers came pop the escape, didn't know -- upon the scene, didn't know it was alex. the sister left to check the scene and came upon the scene and it was alex. >> reporter: the storm also caused other trouble in the napa valley. power lines, and winds snapped utility poles but none of it as tragic of the death of alec. >> heavy winds, heavy rain, bat combination of events. >> reporter: just yesterday he was telling coworkers next

weekend he was going to take his son to the oakland coliseum. today at the plant, the workers are being notified about his debt. live in napa. abc-7 news. >> alan: the brunt of the storm actually struck the south bay. here's the trail of downed trees and debris that it left behind. >> reporter: it wasn't until the sun came up that the real damage became clear. along the peninsula, gusty winds and heavy rains brought power lines down, along with trees, trees, and even more trees. this video sent to you reports shows a true that just narrowly missed a house in belmont. >> there's a lot of older trees in the area so they're prone to falling down, and one up there looks like it could to at any moment. >> reporter: this is the mess neighbors work up to. >> sounded like the roof was going to come off. amazing, sounded like plane

taking off. >> i heard it. it was pretty amazing that thing came down. but it's pretty bad. blocking the whole street. can't get through. >> reporter: this 70-year-old pine will cost the homeowners $1,500 to clean up. it was storm that caused headaches around the bay. >> good day to be you your line of work. >> so far so good, yes. >> reporter: as the trees and rain came down, the water levels had nowhere else to go but up. the reservoir is almost full from all the rain in the santa cruz mountains, but with the water being pushed out faster than it comes in, they don't expect a spillover. >> we welcome this rain because we need it for water spliesm -- supply. it's helpful to end the rainy season with full reservoirs.

>> alan: in the sierra, whiteout conditions shut down traffic from auburn to the nevada state line. caltrans and chp reported almost zero visibility on parts of interstate 80 today. this is kingville just a few minutes ago. you can barely see the road. caltrans closed i-80 at applegate, but westbound from truckee to the state line has been re-opened. the closure ruined weekend plans for travelers and skiers hoping to get to tahoe. >> always want to go to the snow. picked a bad weekend. >> snow and everything else. better to be safe than sorry. >> alan: the ski resort on donner reported three feet of new snow. the snowfall has pushed the water content of the lake tahoe basin snow pack up to 158% of the average. libarch word that allied air

strikes have hit part of moammar gadhafi's compound. his whereabouts are unknown. official says the attacks have been effective in taking out the government's ability to fly in the no fly zone. >> all through the night, cruise missles pounded targets across libya. this video shows international alliance bombing of the libyan air college. in tripoli, antiaircraft fire blazed into the sky. the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff said the strikes had an affect. >> we have taken out their air defense, attacked their forces on the ground in the vipt of benghazi. >> reporter: benghazi is the rebel capital where the scars of conflict are raw. in brazil, president obama was briefed via a secure communication system set up in a tent in his hotel room.

>> we have seen the people of libya take a courageous stan -- stand against a regime buhlealizeing the citizens. >> reporter: the tv aired a statement from gadhafi, saying, we are preparing ourselves for a long war in a vast lan that you cannot find on. the next phase is the no fly sewn over tripoli and benghazi. that operation involved hundreds of aircraft. >> we now have the capability to patrol the air space over libya, and we're doing just that. >> reporter: the pentagon insisted that gadhafi himself was not the target, and emphasized the international coalition is growing. >> alan: there's much more still ahead, including another weekend shooting at a san francisco nightclub. police are still on the hunt for the suspect. an amazing rescue in japan. nine days after the earthquake and tsunami.

>> alan: san francisco police are investigating a shooting that left two people critically injured in front of a nightclub in san francisco just after 2:00. a map and a woman were found with gun shot wounds and were rushed to a local hospital. police are gathering information about the suspect but no description has been released. on to japan, where two units at a struggling nuclear power plant have been declared under control. officials say both units at the fukushima plant have cooled down after operators pumped cold water into fuel storage pools. however, pressure in a third unit's reactor unexpectedly rose

today. radiation is still leaking from the plant, and more food is showing traces of contamination. the japanese government is advising people living near the plant not to drink the tap water. an amazing story of survival. rescue crews found an 80-year-old woman and her teenage grandson nine days after they were trapped beneath the home. they were able to survive on food in their refrigerator. the death toll has climbed to 8,400, and nearly 1300 are still missing. just ahead, the big change that's coming for many cell phone users. two companies are merging into one. >> rain, rain, will it ever go away? leigh glaser coming up with the forecast.

>> leigh: everyone cleaning up, piles of debris that was blown around last night. we managed a little sunshine today. folks, a happy spring to you. spring arrived at 4:21 this afternoon, and bringing in a -- yeah, bringing up a little sunshine for us. but we still have some isolated thunderstorms around the bay area. primarily in the east bay, and we check that out right now with live doppler 7hd. you can see most of the peninsula and the coast is clear. it's in the east bay, cop cooked -- concord, walnut creek, moderate rain, and moderate rain, livermore, this band just moved through the dublin area, towards the tracy area. byron highway got wet with this heavy downpour. all of this is moving to the east, and light rain north of

milpitas, and this band here heading over towards the hayward area. accept rosa, 55. 49, livermore. cooler there because that's where the showers are right now. 53 in mountain view, and 58 in redwood city. here's a look at some scattered showers overnight. another system rotates in here tomorrow, bringing us more showers and a few isolated thunderstorms, and then looks like heavy rain scenario will set up as we head into wednesday and through the day on thursday. here's a look at the frontal system that brought us the rain last night. it's pushing into southern california. the low sitting off the coast will continue to rotate. that's will send scattered showers our way tonight, and will bring down a little moisture tomorrow. so more sures in the accuweather forecast. and tonight, scattered showers will thin out.

and then as the next massive area of moisture moves in tomorrow morning, just in time for the commute, look for wet, wet pavement. tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow night, a little break. push this into tuesday. just a little bit of a break. by 8:00 a.m. tuesday, check this out. more moderate rain moving in, and it stays with us throughout tuesday afternoon. so keep that in mind if you're making travel plans around the state and the bay area tuesday and wednesday. lows tonight, we'll see a few clear patches, so temperatures come down a few degrees. napa, 42. 48 for san francisco, 45 for san jose, and highs for monday will be scattered -- with those scattered showers, in the mid-50s. 53 half moon bay. palo alto, the peninsula, mid-50s. 55 for san francisco. north bay, you'll be dodging afternoon showers. petaluma, 53. 55, napa. east bay locations, most

>> alan: coming up at 6:00, a family is rush to the hospital after suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, what pg&e found out their home. signs of life returning to normal in japan. >> finally, there was enough of a break in this weather for san francisco's first sunday street event of the year to go off without a hitch. city officials closed off part of the embarcadero. it featured biking, skating, tai chi, and dance lessons, the next event is on april 10th in golden gate park. we'll be back at 6:00. thanks for watc.
