>> reporter: the 46-year-old man was on his way to work at 10:20 last night when the giant oak fell at the precise moment his suv was passing under the canopy of trees on south kelly root. he was about to start the overnight shift, running machinery that makes wine labels. he died less than a mile away. >> everybody is very sad. alex was one of our best workers, and people are just crying. they can't believe what just happened. >> reporter: they knew something was wrong when he was late for his shift. his sister went out to check the accident. >> the sister left to come and check the scene, and she came upon the scene, that it was in fact alex. >> reporter: just yesterday, alec was talking about his plans for next weekend. >> never been to the oakland coliseum and this coming up weekend he was going to take his son to the oakland coliseum and

they were going to ride b.a.r.t. and he was just mentioning at lunch he had never been to the coliseum. >> reporter: the storm also brought down other treed and power poles in the napa valley, thug close utility lines. >> what are the odds a tree -- you're going 45 miles-per-hour down the road, and a tree is going to land on you a heavy enough tree to cause serious damage. >> reporter: the man is from vallejo, his brother, sister, and nephew, also work at the plants where today's shifts were being notified of what happened here last night. >> alan: more than 13,000 pg&e customers lost power during the storm. the worth outams were in the north bay where 9,000 customers are still without power. another 1350 outages are scattered across the south bay.

pg&e says it has crews working around the clock. utility hopes to have most of the power restored by this evening. the wild weather has made for a busy day of cleaning up for cruises along the -- cruise -- crews along the peninsula and in the south bay. it was tough day for some homeowners and a good day for arborists. >> the winds and rains were strong enough to bring this sign crashing down and topple trees. but for their south, wasn't until the sun came up that the real damage became clear. along the peninsula, powerlines came down along with trees, trees, and even more trees. this video sent to ureport shows a tree that just narrowly missed a house in belmont. >> extremely wet and dangerous right now. a lot of debris down on the roads. heavy big puddles.

so drive slow and be safe. >> reporter: this is a mess neighbors woke up to. >> sounded like the roof was going to come off. it was amazing. sounded like a plane taking off or something-didn't it? >> yeah. >> reporter: did you hear the same thing? >> i heard it. it was pretty amazing that came down. but, pretty bad. blocking the whole street. can't get through. >> reporter: this 70-year-old month ray -- monterey pine will cost the homeowners $1,500 to clean up. the storm caused headaches around the bay but not for this arbor wrist. >> a good day to be in your line of work. >> a good day, yes. >> reporter: the water levels had nowhere else to go but up. the reservoir is almost full from the rain in the mountains, but with the water being push out faster than it comes in, observers don't previc a spillover and say the rain is a

good thing. >> we welcome this rain because we need it for water supply. it's helpful to end the rainy season with full reservoirs so we can use the water all summer long, all fall, until next rainy season. >> alan: the winds have died down but we had some huge gusts. leigh glaser here to talk about that. >> leigh: we'll get to that. let's turn our attention to live doppler 7hd. it's not quite over yet. the frontal system has actually stalled, moving very slowly towards the east. we have some heavy showers making their way into the east bay. antioch, brentwood, rio vista getting ready to get hit with moderate rain, check out north of milpitas. this batch of rain moving towards the east and will continue to move in towards the fremont area in the next 10 to 15 minutes. let's do take a look at the peak

wind gusts. this happened right after the front moved through between the hours of 1:00 and 2:00 in the important. point san pablo, 70 miles-per-hour win gusts. novato, 60 miles-per-hour. angel eye -- island, 60 wind gusts. so clearly with the saturated soil, with these heavy, heavy winds, you can see why we had so much damage. more rain in the extended forecast. that's coming up. >> alan: let's take a look at the sierra, where whiteout conditions shut down traffic from auburn to the nevada stateline. it's citizens re-opened but chains are required on i-80 and highway 50. this is a look at i-80. you can barely see the road. see soda springs exit, you can see an eye -- icicle hanging.

>> a mill bear family is recovering after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning. pg&e check the home and found the floor's furnace was not properly ventilated. the gas has been shut off while pg&e workers examine the problem. >> san francisco police are investigating a possible hit-and-run after man was found dead at market and 8th street last night. police aren't releasing any information about the car that may have struck that victim. investigators say they want to hear from more witnesses who can tell them exactly what happened. in san francisco, police are investigating a shooting that left a man and a woman critically injured. it happened just after 2:00 a.m. outside the el toro night club. a man and his 20s shot the two victims, then ran off. police say the male victim has life-threatening injuries. up next, the attack on libya.

struggling nuclear power plant under control. both units have cooled down after operators pumped cool water into storming -- storage pool. however pressure in a third unit rose today. the japanese government is advising people living near the plant not to drink the tap water. a ray of hope was a remarkable rescue sunday, an 80-year-old woman was pull from the rubble where she and her grandson had been trapped for more than a week. she had apparently been pinned under in the refrigerator. fortunately for her she survived on food from the fridge for nine days until her grandson managed to pull himself out. he called for help from the roof of the flattened house. >> a few signs that life is returning to normal. nissan plans to resume auto and parts production at five japanese factories on monday and

san jose, 56. clear patches overnight. showers and isolated thunderstorms expected for our monday. we'll see a few sun breaks, too, and then it looks like a heavy rain system will be possible as we head into tuesday night, and throughout the day on wednesday. i want to take you back to last night. this is the cull -- actual cold front, classic comma, very tight here, denoting a very strong storm and this is about 1:00 in the morning, and that's when those winds picked up, and then this barreled through. stalled through the central valley area so still seeing quite a bit of rainfall, and this activity right back here, this area of low pressure will pin wheel moisture in our direction off and on. you can see he moisture here, just going to be lifted up and we'll continue with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms monday. overnight tonight, some of this
