nashville, tennessee. >> we went first to check in. they told us our plane was cancelled. didn't get a text message or phone call. a little angry about that. >> he is not the only one angry at southwest airlines. >> got here at 8:00. so, -- >> when are you getting out? >> our flight to boston leaves at 11:0 tonight. so we're going to hang out at the airport. >> reporter: this line is filled with people forced to make alternate travel plans because southwest grounded 79 of its 737s for fuselage inspection after a portion of the fuselage ripped away yesterday on a flight from phoenix and sacramento. our aviation consultant points out an area on the 737 fuselage like the one that failed out flight 812. it's a spot where two planes overlap. he said planes get a lot of use, cottsing fuselage fatigue.

>> you can't see it. but it's to some degree it expands and then depressurization and it cracks. >> reporter: the fuselage blowout as caused massive delays and cancellations, southwest issued this statement: the safety of our customers and employees is our primary concern. we're working closely with going to conduct inspections and support the investigation. we are working aggressively to attempt to minimize in the impact to our customers travel schedules today. that being said, some travelers at sfo don't know when they'll reach their destination. in oakland, more than a dozen flights were cancelled. cory is traveling with his very pregnant wife. >> our flight was cancelled and our next available flight was 12 hours from that flight cancellation. >> reporter: many flights were connected flights, which has

doubled and tripled travel time for some people. >> i want to be on a safe plane so i'm glad they're checking our planes. so that's good. southwest could have handled it better. >> reporter: southwest cancelled a lot of flights in the bay area. 12 at sfo. 22 in oakland, 21 in san jose. he airline says if you plan on traveling on southwest tomorrow, check the web site before leaving home. reporting live at sfo, abc-7 news. >> alan: two years ago fatigue cracks caused a football-sized hole to open up in another southwesterly 737. the cabin also lost pressure and the plane made an new jersey landing -- emergency landing inwest. the hole was caused by metal fatigue. in response to that accident, southwest changed its maintenance plan to include additional inspections. a fire in the berkeley hills

caused a scare. >> can't get the hydrant open. >> alan: firefighters struggled with a sub barn hydrant while a fully engulfed home threatened homes around it. it started on queens road. firefighters were preparing to conduct a rescue when word got back that the elderly couple who lives there was out shopping. the family dog also escaped and firefighters had it under control in 30 minutes. witnesses say they could see it burning from clear across the bay. in santa cruz, police arrested a man suspected of intentionally leaving leaving to suspicious looking suitcases in a bank lobby. it happened at the bank of the west on pacific avenue. officers initially thought the luggage may have been explosive so police closed off the block and rerouted traffic for about two hours. while the bomb squad was working, 52-year-old grant

>> alan: a bay area maintenance in a medically induced coma after being beat 'outside of dodger stadium. here's more. >> reporter: brian stowman is in critical condition, and family members are here at the hospital. they tell us he underwent surgery yesterday. this was to remove part of his skull and that was to alleviate pressure in his brain, to alleviate the swelling taking place in his brain. so he is in a medically induced coma here at county usc medical center. the l.a.p.d. is trying to find out who beat him on thursday and put him in this condition. the suspects depicted in these sketches knocked him to the ground and repeatedly kicked the giants fan in the head. it happened after thursday's game an dodger stadium. l.a. beat san francisco and some dodger fans were heckling giant

fans. his brother says brian never saw the attack coming. two guys pushed him from behind. dodger and giant fans say they're disgusted and disappointed by the up sportsman like conduct they witnessed and say there's no reason to get violent and lash out at fans from the opposing team. >> it's disgusting. we have been doing this for four seasons now, and this season it just -- it's a lot right -- a lot rowdier and people have no sportsmanship at all. >> reporter: dodger fans says this makes them look bad and don't bode well for all of l.a. fans were cheering for both teams and are wishing bryan stowman a full and speedy recovery. there's a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the two suspects.

>> alan: thanks for the uptate in international news, more violence in afghanistan today following the deadly massacre of seven united nations workers yesterday in response to a florida pastor's burning of the koran. terry jones says he feels no responsibility for the deadly attacks but the chief othe uted nations mission in afghanistan had a message for jones. >> if he did look at me at this moment, i would tell him my three colleagues and died, and the seven altogether died, were very good people so you should be feeling guilty. >> alan: in the second day of angry demonstrations, thousands filled kandahar city, sitting fire to shops and cars in an effort to control the large crowd, police killed nine protesters and injured more than 80 others. rebels in libya say 13 of their fighters have been killed in a nato air strike aimed at their opponents. a rebel spokesman says the

>> alan: it is official. this year's monster snow pack has extended the ski season by another month in the sierra. most ski resorts shut down for the season in aim this year's squaw valley says it will stay open threw at least memorial day. the resort received 57 feet of snow. that's a record since measurements began in 1970.
