making news in america this morning -- >> midair scare. new developments as southwest checks dozens of planes like the one that burst open at 36,000 feet. and the growing uproar overseas over a florida pastor's burning of a holy book. new reaction from the pastor himself. and a surprising announcement overnight about cbs news' katie couric. good morning, everyone. i'm mike marusarz in for rob nelson. >> and i'm peggy bunker. concern about the safety of southwest airlines planes grew overnight as we learned that krax have been found in the metal skins of three more planes. >> fatigue cracks are believed to have caused this plane to

break open mid flight on friday. >> emily schmidt is tracking the latest. good morning, peggy and mike. investigators can hold the piece of plane that ripped open in their two hands. but getting a grip on whether this is part of a larger problem could be much more complicated. investigators think this section of southwest airlines flight 812 shows what caused the plane to up up mid flight. five square feet of tearing from what is believed to be fatigue cracks in the fuselage. >> that's a very disturbing point because it's a place that can cause great amount of damage to an airplane. >> reporter: the national transportation safety board says there are no science of faulty maintenance. instead, they were on a part of plane that is not expected because cracks are not expected there. >> we have no indications that

something was actually missed. in an inspection. something that could have been detected that wasn't detected. >> now, we may have on check airplanes where we never thought we would have to check before. >> reporter: documents reviewed by abc news showed that 15-year-old plane had an extensive maintenance check last year. at least a dozen cracks were repaired. that's not unusual. 18 minutes into the flight, the top opened up. southwest canceled hundreds of flights to inspect 80 similar planes. small cracks have been found in three of them. >> it's bad enough to get jammed up as it is. let alone get caught up in maintenance problems. >> probably not until tuesday. will we get back. >> reporter: thousands of passengers will still be grounded today. while the broken section of flight 812 is on its way to washington. for detailed analysis. peggy and mike? >> thanks for that update, emily. also in washington, president obama makes a big announcement today. that comes as a surprise to no one. he's officially announcing his

re-election campaign in a mass e-mail to su it allows him to start raising money. some believe he could raise enough money to be the first billion-dollar candidate. so far no republican has officially entered the race. u.s. fighter jets will continue to strike at moammar gadhafi's forces through this evening. american participation was supposed to end on saturday. but nato asked for a 48-hour extension. bad weather in libya hampered nato's efforts. libyan government forces took advantage of the lull in air strikes to take back territory. the unrest in syria has forced the state department to issue a new warning about travel to that country. it's allowing family members of u.s. government workers to leave the country. i says those americans remaining in syria should avoid demonstrations. and "the new york times" reports that the administration wants yemen's president to step down. the u.s. had second thoughts

about president saleh after dozens of protesters were killed at an anti-government rally. deadly protests continue across after began stan after the burning of a koran by a pastor of a florida church. pastor terry jones and his followers have been the subject of death threats since burning the koran a few weeks ago. he says he doesn't feel responsible for those killed in the unrest. in a new interview with abc news, he stands by his convictions. >> we are willing to put our lives at risk. >> you are willing to die for this? >> yes, we are. yes. very definitely. >> we'll have much more from pastor jones coming up on "good morning america." well, there's been another passenger death on a tour bus. in massachusetts, two men fell out of a bathroom window of a moving bus as it returned from a trip to a brewery. one man died. the other is in the hospital. police are trying to figure out if they were just horse playing

or if something else was a factor. across the southwest, gusty winds, dry conditions, and record-high temperatures are helping to spread wildfires. residents of satanta were told to leave as the fire threatened to consume the town. alicia meyers was there. >> reporter: the fire started around noon sunday and rapidly spread. >> we have never experienced anything like this before. it was pretty scary. >> reporter: residents were evacuated from their homes. >> grabbed some pictures off the wall, threw some suitcases of clothes together, threw it in the camper and headed south. >> reporter: by about 5:30, 80% of the fire was contained. by about 6:30, winds picked up out of the north, causing fires to rekindle and move southeast, towards satanta, jumping highway 190. residents say they have never seen anything like sunday's grass fire. they say they hope they never see it again.

companies are dealing with the fallout of some of the biggest data breaches ever. citibank, wall walgre rken are warning customers. the information was stolen from epsilon. and bp wants to start drilling in the gulf again. the new york times report that bp would like to drill at ten existing wells in exchange for following new standards. asian markets are rising. after friday's encouraging u.s. jobs report. tokyo's nikkei average went up a tenth of a percent today. the hang seng gained as well. the ftse was lower. the dow climbed 156 points. the nasdaq climbed 46 points. airlines did a better job arriving on time last year and lost fewer bags. that wasn't enough to keep passengers happy. according to an annual study,

complaints jumped 28% from the year before. delta got the most complaints, followed by united and u.s. airways. southwest has the fewest. reducing its complaint rate. alaska and mesa airlines got high marks. easter is not for a few weeks. the bunny hopped to the top spot in the weekend box office. "hop" opened in first place. that matched "rango" for the year's best debut. "source code" opened in second, followed by "insidious." and there was breaking media news overnight. there is going to be a new anchor at the cbs evening news. katie couric is leaving after less than five years on the job. she's expected to launch a syndicated talk show next year. but we don't know when her final broadcast will be at cbs. quite the buzz, that's for sure. coming up next, the medical marijuana break through. getting the health benefits a rare upset of the uconn women on the quest for the national title.
