almost sounds like cheering. well, here's something you can applaud. hooray, bacon! only at denny's. good morning. it is 8:00 this saturday morning i'm janelle wang. oakland police are investigating the fatal shooting of a driver who crashed through a mall this morning. he was driving around 2:00 this morning when he was shot multiple times causing him to crash his truck into several parked cars. he was pronounced dead on arrival at an oakland hospital. the victim's name has not been released and detectives are looking into circumstances surrounding the shooting. so far no arrests have been made. >> native american demonstrators are continuing their protest over plans by the vallejo city

government to convert what they consider sacred burial grounds into a park. 6 the tribes are camping out at the glen cove area in vallejo and they say they won't allow construction to take place here. tomas ramon has their story. >> reporter: about two dozen native americans are occupying the 15 acres they consider a sacred burial site. they want to block any machinery attempting to change this area. >> no, sir. we don't want nothing to be built atop of our sacred side. i don't believe they would believe a toilet on top of their an says tors. >> the standoff between the treins and vallejo is because the greater recreation district wants to develop the land into a park area where the parking lot, benches and restrooms. native americans say they have been fighting the district for

>> many different tribes are buried here. one group should not speak for all. >> they say the grvd has complied with every regulation including to make sure that restrooms and a parking lot are well away from any respected grave sites. they will have a meeting on monday. >> janelle: in other news this morning, the investigation into yesterday's deadly caltrain accident. a woman from indiana was killed when her car got stuck on the track. this is video. the incident caused major delays at the height of the afternoon rush hour in palo alto. police say the car was hit in the intersection of charleston road and alma street. the woman wasn't able to get out in time but her husband escaped. 400 people on board the train were evacuated. >> a muni driver has been fired

after he reportedly kicked passengers off his bus. this is surveillance video from on board the line last saturday. a woman says the driver kicked her off the bus. one stop later, passengers say the operator kicked the rest of them off when the bus experienced mechanical problems. they reviewed the onboard surveillance and concluded it supported the passengers' accounts. >> there is more improvement in california's job market it dipped to 12.8%. march marks the third straight month of decline for the jobs rate. according to the employment development department, 2.4 million were unemployed. a report released yesterday by san rafael based company says unemployment in the bay area will not turn to pre-recession levels until 2015.

battle. president obama has signed a compromise spending plan that congress approved on thursday. it keeps the government running for the next six months. yesterday, house republicans roared back in passing 2012 budget plan of their own. it slashes core programs like food stamps and medicaid. not a single democrat volunteered for the plan and it's not likely to pass the democratic controlled senate. house republicans say they are sending a message that it's time for congress to get serious about doing something with the deficit. >> facebook ceo mark zuckerberg were among at party for a new data center there. she told a crowd that the custom built data center will be green operation to using 38% less energy. until now facebook data centers

>> janelle: welcome back on this saturday morning. it's 8:18 right now. look at this beautiful shot from mount tam. you can see some cloud cover around the bay area. sun trying to peek through on us. lisa argen is going to have a full forecast in just a moment. >> this is a tornado that is pounding the southern u.s. at least 16 people have died. here is the latest. >> it happened overnight, powerful twisters like this one in jackson, mississippi. uprooted trees and smashed cars across mississippi. the tornados were part of a powerful line of storms that marched eastward that caused more destruction. they touched down in six

counties in alabama with heavy wind and rain. >> it's like 20 seconds it was boom! >> northwest of atlanta dozens of cashes were trapped and falling trees and downed power lines left thousands without power. >> power out all across. >> the worth of is it is in oklahoma and arkansas where residents are still reeling from tornado damage. >> in arkansas, at least seven were killed including a man and his daughter who were killed after a tree fell on their mobile home. in oklahoma, much of the town is completely destroyed including the town's only school. >> it's just horrible. it's all gone. it's about the bye school. >> leonard went to the shelter after the storm, and went back

and found his home in scattered pieces and his fishing boat high in the pine trees. >> 40 years, 40 years of work. i've never seen nothing like that. >> janelle: that is heartbreaking. lisa argen is here with the local weather forecast. >> pretty tranquil we'll see nice temperatures in afternoon and into the 70s. elsewhere, we do have a lot of cloud cover. case in point is the low clouds, you can see part of the tower poking up out there. cloud level at 500 to 700 feet along the coast. we will look for more clouds in the north bay, as a result of you see some sun. we'll look for temperatures in the 60s and 70s today. so numbers are mild, especially in the east bay. 56, not only in fremont, also mountain view and redwood city 54. we had temperatures drop to 50 in santa rosa. we do have a mixed bag not only

now but over the weekend we will see scattered clouds, mild temperatures today. they will be the warmest day out of the next seven, light rain arrives tomorrow night into monday and then there is another opportunity for some more rain, would you believe, next week. and radar composite, clouds and few light showers to the north. there a weak frontal boundary and it will be sagging to the south by tomorrow night. as for today high pressure is in control and it will stay with us through the entire weekend. clouds are flirting in the north bay from time to time and pretty far north, not ruling out a few sprinkles today today. but notice the big contrast, to 98 in palm springs. in between you got clouds in fresno. partly cloudy in sacramento, 71 and low 70s in the southern sierra with the stratus return to our shoreline. here is the time line, more

2009. but nearly half a percent lower an year ago. some of the drop shows that more people are getting hired. in the last year, california gained 188,000 jobs, small when compared to the more million jobs the state lost during the heart of the economic downturn but its start. >> what we are seeing is job gains. an average of 26,000 a month over the last 6 months. that is big news and that is better than what we're doing on a national scale. >> more people working is great news for the deficit ridden budget. revenues are already $2 billion above forecast. >> making more money, brings more in terms of income taxes. they can spend more and more sales taxes. >> but this slow job growth isn't happening fast enough to erase the remaining $14 billion deficit. it may mean fewer budget cuts if more taxes keep coming in.

schwarzenegger's last acts as governor is again stirring up controversy. he commuted the sentence of esteban nunez. its decision that the governor has refused to discuss but he made a rather unexpected comment in l.a. lyanne melendez reports. >> good morning, governor. >> how are you? >> you are boring the hell out of me. >> i think a lot of people want to know? >> why did you reduce the sentence for nunez? >> the former governor refused to answer the question and instead made snoring sounds. when she heard that, victim's mother was irate. >> it's outrageous and makes me so mad. to abuse power and try and get away with it. it's just unbelievable. >> in 2008, a college student was walking with friends on the

san diego state campus when they stumbled upon nunez and three others. he did not stab santos but admitted of assaulting the others with knife. fabian nunez pleaded guilty in exchange for a reduced sentence. nunez and man that fatally stabbed sanchez each got 15 years but then governor reduce the sentence by half. santos family is suing the former governor, in addition they are supporting a bill that would require the district attorney and families to be notified when a governor considers reducing anyone's prison term. >> the district attorney would have fought for our case. right. we didn't have because we didn't get through in the 11th hour in the last day of the office he quietly signed it around 4:00 p.m. and nobody got a heads up about it, i think was january

has been confined to extreme northern california. the rain line, the clouds anyway have been filtering through much of the bay area today. we've got an area of low pressure and a cold front that will continue to sink south. by the end of the weekend, we're going to see a few showers. maybe a quarter of an inch of rain in the north bay before it's all said and done. 60s along the coast. we've got an offshore flow in southern california with 98 degrees in palm springs. 91 in los angeles. makes sense that the winds are out of the north-northeast. 78 in fresno with more clouds and 58 in the northern sierra. here is the time line on the rain. more clouds tomorrow. temperatures slightly cooler and later on in the evening, late rain in the overnight hours. out ahead of the front chance of showers, even down to santa cruz

welcome back everyone to the saturday morning news. you are taking a look at the golden gate bridge, live shot of people headed into san francisco. if you are heading into the city maybe check out the dragon boat races at lake merced and also the cherry blossom festival in japantown is going on right now for the second weekend. another key hurdle is just about complete on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. crews are installing a 15-foot tall, 480 ton section called a grillet. caltrans provided animation. it's used to hold together the legs on the tower. >> the main tower is self-anchored bridge and four legs and think of it as a stool, we're right putting the seat on top of the stool. >> janelle: it will help secure

another 500 ton section known as the saddle in a video supplied by caltrans. it will hold the cables on 3525 foot tower in place. caltrans says the new $3.6 billion span is expected to be completed in 2013. >> competitors from across the country and overseas will be climbing into cages and engaging in mortal combat but the contestants are robots. there are more to robo games than meets the lie. >> this looks like fun and games but the cost to build one of these combat robots can run upwards of two grand, not to mention an engineering team putting in hundreds of hours into design and practice. it's the eighth annual robo games. in this match-up, an entry called lucifer's foot stool one the first ever competition. jim was advising hem along the
