a tornado went through the main terminal causing a mess. investigators say they now know what caused a hole in southwest jet. >> 61 in oakland with the threat of showers lingering today. >> good morning. crews are cleaning up this morninga an apparent tornado tore through the terminal at the main airport in st. louis. air travel is still a mess across the midwest. dan ashley has more. >> debris is scattered across runways. powerful wind gusts blew the roof off of one terminal and

shattered windows. winds were so powerful they lifted a shuttle bus on to the second level of a parking garage. this mother was waiting to pick up her husband. >> the skies went totally blast. the wind picked the car up. dropped it and blew out the windows. it happened real fast. piece of plastic came in and hit her. i threw the phone and grabbed her and put her in the front seat. >> four people were taken to the hospital with injuries mostly from flying glass. >> all the windows started blowing out at one time. next we heard it was falling and they told us to go down to a bunker in the airport and pleits were going out. very scary. >> two planes were stranded briefly on the tarmac because of the debris. i spoke to a passenger on one of

those planes. >> we started to pick up and airplane started to flicker and we started moving along the tarmac. then we flew between five and ten feet away from that connector. >> missouri's governor has declared an emergency and stloot st. louis airport has been closed indefinitely. in more air news they have pinpointed a defect that caused a hole in a jet earlier this month. passengers saw the sky when the roof of the 737 started peeling back in midair. lisa amin gulezian has more. >> reporter: abc news has learned that investigators are focusing their attention on rivets those tiny pins that hold pieces of a plane together. sources say on the southbound

737, the rivets failed because they didn't fit perfectly. the rivet may have been sized incorrectly back on the assembly line. >> over time with the flexing and expansion and contraction the pressurize go the airport's fuselage those holes would expand or change. >> reporter: and in this appellant's case the seam created a hole. oxygen masks dropped and the pilot quickly dropped to a lower altitude. >> masks came down. >> as a result boeing ordered inspections of similar 737s worldwide nearly 600 total. a third required inspections and of those five planes were cracked and all five were built around the same time as the plane that came apart. >> the cracks are along this

joint where the two pieces lap. the crack will become worse and worse with every pressurization. >> passengers have mixed reactions about the latest findings. >> we take chances when we fly and there can be problems that can occur but, but i still believe in the system. >> they should be taken out of service until they investigate them. >> reporter: this is investigation is not over. while it's still going on the plane that ripped apart has been patched and is expected to go back into service. at sfo, lisa amin gulezian, "abc 7 news." >> other news the santa clara mother has been arrested for leaving her toddler alone while she gambled. they arrested her for felony child endangerment in san jose on thursday night. a security guard called police after noticing the girl strapped

into her car seat and locked in the vehicle. she was arrested on felony child endangerment charges and the little girl was released to her father. >> in the south bay the parents of a two-year-old boy killed last year when a rotting tree fell on the family's pickup truck has now filed a wrongful death lawsuit. it accuses a neighbor and the city of san jose of negligence. they rejected an earlier claim for damages. the suit asks for unspecified damages. 750s in commuters a day on average use the san francisco transit system but the means of transportation could be in jeopardy. members of the muni operators union authorized a strike if negotiations with the city now in the second month don't go as they hope. >> friday's news that local union 250-a that they authorized a strike struck some as bold.

a camera caught them ordering off a bus. and another was texting while driving. and doors were wide open even as the muni trains rolled on. a supervisor witnessed one of those doors malfunctions but the union has really hurt itself to author authorize a strike. >> to authorize a strike is not productive. >> union members declined to talk to the camera but union treasury told abc news that quote we already have two black eyes and a broken nose. it doesn't make any difference. charred good year a speck person for muni says they are hoping to scale back the budget by $25-50 million. >> we hope the leadership will join us in addressing the economic realities that everyone in san francisco is facing now. >> public sympathy doesn't seem

to be with the unions who's members earn just over $100,000 a year. >> it's hard to stand up as much pay during the boom years. >> every city employee unions have been taking pay cuts, has than creasing pension contributions, has been really chipping in to make sure we can address our budget problems. twu is the only union that hasn't done that. by law muni drivers cannot strike but the union says that is up for legal interpretation. a city attorney says he will take legal action to prevent a work stoppage. >> golden gate ferries will be going up this summer. they approved the increases for fares. cost to ride the sausalito ferry will go up a dollar and bus

good morning. welcome back to "abc 7 news." you are looking at a live picture from mount tam showing the marine layer rolling in. mixture of clouds and blue skies out there. >> several mission blue butterflies were released yesterday. it's part of and the on restore the endangered species to the area after a small population was discovered there. park officials carefully placed several butterflies to reintroduce them to the habitat. >> butterfly will stay there until it gets cold. we want to it stay on that plant and lay its eggs before it flies off tomorrow morning. so before the end of the day we will release the netting over the plant.

>> san francisco's park department says the spread of invasive plants reduced the man at that time in san francisco but now apparently they are back. good morning. we are looking at some blue skies. with the low clouds and mid-level cloud. no rain to talk of right now. there is a weak system offshore that could bring sprinkles later on today. again on monday. so we are looking at this point drier tomorrow for easter sunday. right now temperatures are beginning to warm up in response to a little sunshine. 52 in fremont. 53 in oakland. it's 50 on the coast. 46 in san rafael. so maybe a couple of sprinkles here and there but for the most part of the area of low pressure sits offshore. then we'll look at partly cloudy skies and then another system for monday. we are looking at a series of weak weather systems providing

private mervin simms so unusual is that he died in world war ii. [ gun shots ] [ "taps" playing ] >> reporter: it was the end of a long 68-year mystery. mervin simms came home with full military honors. his final resting place the cemetery where his mother and father are buried. >> he is back home where he belongs, with his family. 1938. there he is. >> she brought her year book from petaluma high school. she and betty rupture him. >> i went to the first grade all the way through high school. >> they both said the same thing, he was a nice young man. like many of young men 23-year-old enlisted in the army air force.

so really not a bad looking day tomorrow. it will be a better day a sunnier day of the weekend. right now it looks nice. from the satellite you notice the rain shower activity is to the north. we've had rain and some snow in the sierra nevada. closer inspection of the visible picture you'll notice the darker shade. that is the clear sky. that is why we're enjoying a quiet start to your saturday. as we go through the next couple of days. we still have that moist flow to the west of us. that will continue to bring in one system after the next. we will be looking at conditions to continue to sort of be unselt settled as we head towards tomorrow. pull out the map as we head through the dated today numbers will be in the 60s. in the low 50s. we'll have the better chance of showers coming in on monday.

when that happens that looks as though we'll probably see a wet start for the day on monday morning. i can tell you, high temperatures in and around 60 degree range and only the low 50s in san francisco. 59 in the city. with 58 in the sunset district. the richmond district and loy to mid 60s out in the valleys. that is well below the average with more sunshine coming in this morning. this afternoon mostly cloudy skies and chance of rain continues into the evening hours. early part of easter, look at golden gate bridge and few clouds around. quiet out there and any rain that we do see, it's going to be light. here is the south bay, partly cloudy in san jose with temperatures right now in the low 50s. all in all cloudier day will be today. it was a chance of sprinkles today, tonight and tomorrow and getting better throughout the
