resources of abc news with terry moran and bill weir in new york city, and cynthia mcfadden in london this is "nightline," april 27th, 2011. >> good evening, i'll bill weir. it was a storm that swallowed a city. and estimated mile-wide tornado made a direct hit this evening on tuscaloosa alabama, population 180,000. mass casualties are reported. the numbers still in flux. but storm fatalities also reported tonight in mississippi, georgia and tennessee. these twisters part of a storm system that began to sweep the south on monday. steve osunsami has been covering it and joins us now from lincoln, alabama with the latest. steve? >> reporter: bill, it was a fightening night. fist, it was the sound of the sirens. from city to city, that you could hear blaring through the night. then there was the sight of the funnel clouds racing across the sky, bringing high winds and

tornadoes, hopscotching across the state. tearing down trees, bringing them over power lines. hundreds of thousands of people without power, causing a number of fatalities. we won't really know the number until the sun comes up. >> this thing is massive. >> reporter: the pictures of the skies over alabama this evening were frightening. unbelievably large tornadoes swirling over large sections of birmingham and tuscaloosa. some of them appeared to be more than a mile wide. >> it looks like we got hit by 5,000-pound bomb here. >> it is a total mess. you have cars on top of cars. buildings crushed. >> reporter: in tuscaloosa tonight, reports that more than a dozen people were killed and 100 injured. and these were pictures of a rescue at a housing complex where the brick apartments were smashed into bits. the young girl they pulled from the debris survived. the night is still young. in the dark tonight, forecasters say there are still more funnel clouds lurking over parts of

alabama and now georgia. the sirens that started blaring early this evening will continue through the night. the governor has called in the national guard and asked the president to declare a state of emergency. >> we're going to reach out to everyone that's hurting and it's going to take days. it's not -- weeks. it's not going to be a quick response. >> reporter: the storms have hit with a one-two punch. the first round came this morning, just after 6:00 a.m. a tornado was bearing down on families in moody, alabama. >> i felt the bed shaking and that's when i jumped up. >> nothing left. >> reporter: at wendy's home it's all gone. >> just kind of like makes you stop and you think, you know wow, you know we're here one minute and we could be gone the next. >> reporter: george says it happened so fast they didn't have time to run for cover. is this your wall on the floor here? >> yeah. that was the front of the house. that was the front of the house. >> reporter: one woman down the

road was killed. his family was lucky they got out alive. >> pieces of our house scattered all over two three counties, i think. but like i said we're alive. we survived it. >> reporter: later this evening, the tornadoes turned their deadly path to dade county d.a. ga, where more people were killed. in poplar grove, missouri it was insult to injury. first, the levee broke. today, the hail fell harold. >> it's been about every day, every six hours or so we'll have tornadoes, sere vie damage. >> reporter: the map is ugly. tornadoes across several states. more than 45 of them since this morning, one afternoon another. 20 alone in alabama. and, there's so much rain. across the midwest, there's now major flooding along the mississippi and ohio rivers. this suv was surrounded by rising waters. a parking lot in illinois was transformed into a lake. and in branson, missouri

>> i just have to gain that trust back. >> reporter: this family is doing something extraordinary. fully airing a hideous family secret. >> i don't want to be angry. >> might not be able to be around her because of you. >> reporter: a mother a daughter and the step-father who molested her, struggling to pick up the pieces. they've agreed to sit down all together, for the first time to grapple with the betrayal that nearly destroyed their family. >> i just was oblivious. i had no clue that it was going on. >> i asked myself, you know how could i do this and cause all this pain? and it's terrible. it's a terrible thing to have to own up to. >> reporter: tracy was just 7 months old when her real father died suddenly leaving her and her brother in the care of a devastated mother. so, when her step-dad donnie showed up, he was like a knight in shining armor. >> he swept me up immediately

into fun and adventure. he had the knowledge and ability to ski and hike and do all of these things that as a kid i loved. i loved being outdoors. and he brought this light into our lives. >> reporter: he saved your family. >> he definitely saved my family. >> reporter: the man who saved her also molested her. she says it began on a family camping trim when she was just 8. >> and i just remember waking up in the middle of the night, feeling like i was suffocating. very hot and the feeling of hands, like sandpapery fingers on my body in places that they shouldn't have been. >> reporter: and you knew enough to blow the whistle? >> i did. >> reporter: the next morning, she told her mother. >> i said something scary happened last night and i need your help. i don't know what to do. >> reporter: and did she help? >> she did not help. she called my dad in. they told me that i had had a

scary dream. >> reporter: that was the first betrayal. she recalled a home life lived behind drawn curtains. >> at some point when i entered puberty, my dad started stumbling in on me while i was in the bathtub or i would feel him outside my window with the blinlds cracked open watching. and then he would come into my room at night when i was on the verge of sleep or asleep and molest me and do things to me that just got progressively worse. i just look at myself you know. >> reporter: what do you see? >> a little girt. you know putting on a good face. but i was really going through hell. this is the time when i knew like, it was reaching its peak. >> reporter: now pregnant with her third child, it was only after she became a wife and mother that she was overwhelmed with a need for answers. she asked her father to go with her into the wilderness. they hiked back to that place in the mountains where it all began.

did he know you were going to confront him? >> he knew we were going back there to talk about it. >> reporter: and she learned more than she would haver imagined. >> i thought the answers were going to come out and it was going to be a huge weight lifted off. and it was instead, a huge weight poured on. >> i told her i'd be as truthful on things that she wanted to know about that i didn't -- that she didn't know about. >> reporter: he confessed to molesting her between 25 and 50 times, many more times than she'd remembered. >> he said part of it was that you weren't always aware of what i was doing. and that's when he would use my mom's sleeping pills to kind of take me out of the equation in a way. >> reporter: to knock you out. >> to knock me out so that he would -- i think he felt not traumatize me more. >> reporter: this new information helped explain why so many of her memories were

hazy and also why, as a teenager she felt such an urgent need to run away. >> i knew in my heart, if i didn't do something, it was going to cross the line into rape. and so i waited until my dad went to bed and i got up and i ran away. >> reporter: she spent several months bouncing from foster home to foster home. her father formally admitted to molesting her, but in private, told tracy's mother that he was only saying it to reunite the family. >> very angry at myself. >> reporter: even now, her mother, doris, who stayed married all this time has a hard time explaining why she didn't do more. >> just unbelievable. shame. at what, you know -- i didn't take care of my daughter. >> reporter: bits and pieces of confession and forgiveness have trickled out. >> i lied to doris in order to

mend our relationship. >> reporter: but it wasn't until now, with the publication of tracy's memoir, "the source of all things," that they all decided to sit down and face the whole truth as they tell the whole world. >> i justified in my own mind what i was doing was okay. >> reporter: her father also has a story of abuse. he, too, was molested by a family member as a young boy. >> something that happened before and that was where my boundaries kind of was confused. >> i don't know of another perpetrator who is doing what he's doing saying look here i am. i'm never guy, possibly. i'm not an ogre, scary guy. and look what i was capable of doing. >> reporter: do you forgive him? >> i do. >> reporter: do forgive your mom? >> i'm working on it. >> hi, how are you? >> reporter: you have a policy when it comes to your kids and

>> announcer: "nightline" continues from london with cynthia mcfadden. >> we're back at westminster abbey, where there has been much excitement. we heard that kate middleton will walk down the aisle in front of 25-foot trees. a country wedding inside the cathedral. and tonight, she and her roil fiance, prince william, both came here unexpectedly to the abbey, to rehearse complete with the bride's parents senior clergy, and prince harry. a large crowd has assembled in anticipation of the wedding and greeted the couple with cheers. so much attention on william this week. finally, after decades spent carefully evading the limelight, this event has become just sorthort of a coronation for him. he's doing what is expected of him, taking a bride. but bill i understand you talked to someone who provides a rare look at the childhood of the young man.
