program. >> reporter: in less than four hours residents filled since large containers with prescriptions they're trying to get rid of. many did it for environmental reasons. they didn't want flush them done the toilet. but police say that's not the only problem. >> dry stuff in there and then liquid ointments, in the box. >> reporter: in cities all of the bay area today -- >> drop them in the bin. >> reporter: people are trashing their stash of drugs. prescription drug that are unused or expired. >> i held them at home in a plastic bag for a long time hoping to find a place. >> reporter: the drug enforcement administration is sponsoring this drug takeback day, a push to get rid of drugs that end up in the wrong hands. >> prescription drugs is abused more than cocaine, and heroin combined. and we're talking about individuals from the age of 12

to adult. >> reporter: one in seven teenagers admits to abusing prescription drugs to get high and they say pharmaceuticals are easier to get than illegal drugs. 6.2 million americans abuse medicine that's not prescribed to them. if the pills aren't found at home, they're easy to find on the street. on pill hill, the drug of choice is vicodin. the going rate is $4 a bill. >> kids are resourceful. we're -- so we're doing whatever we can do to get rid of it. >> a lot of people in the city of oakland has things laying around that kids get ahold of, and just not at good practice to have medicine in the house that you don't need. >> reporter: the last time the

dea had a drug takeback day, they collected 10,000 pounds of drugs in northern california alone. all the drugs will be taken away and burned. live in san francisco, lisa amin gulezian, abc-7 news. >> alan: democrats are now calling for an end to oil company tax breaks after several companies posted near record profits this week. but the g.o.p. says the plan could actually backfire. senator barbara boxer was at a los angeles gas station today. she put forward six ideas to lower gas prices including pressuring refiners to step up production. >> keep the gasoline here in the united states when at it found here in the united states. rather than sitting back and profiting from tight supplies and adding to the tight supply by exporting oil. >> alan: in his weekly address, president obama also talked about ending the $4 billion in annual taxpayer subsidies to oil
