those spies gathered intelligence on bin laden and the other residents for months before the raid. and one of bin laden's wives has revealed to pakistani intelligence that the family has actually been living in that compound for five years. >> pretty unbelievable. after visiting with 9/11 families yesterday, president obama heads to kentucky, to meet with the navy s.e.a.l.s that carried out that mission against bin laden. mr. obama will thank the s.e.a.l.s and congratulate them on a job well done. >> that's an understatement, job well done. wow. we turn to the big headline of the day. material taken by the s.e.a.l.s reveal another plot against the u.s. emily schmidt is joining us, now, from washington with more. chilling news, emily. good morning. >> reporter: rob and peggy, good morning to you. osama bin laden's death meant removing an al qaeda leader. but also looking into what he may have had planned. because of that, officials issue a new warning that targeted the u.s. four months from now.

in a week when so much has been said about osama bin laden's death, president obama was silent when placing a wreath at ground zero. he had saved his words for first responders and family members of 9/11 victims. >> when we say we will never forget, we mean what we say. >> reporter: patricia riley told the president, her sister, killed on 9/11, deserves that justice. >> i was so grateful, that the last thing that osama bin laden saw was an american soldier who came to get him for what he had done. >> reporter: today, president obama personally thanks the navy s.e.a.l.s and others on the mission that killed bin laden, when he travels here to ft. campbell, kentucky. the s.e.a.l.s remain anonymous. the community is proud of their success. >> everyone has wanted to see the outcome for a long time. >> reporter: information from bin laden's compound has already led to a new homeland security bulletin obtained by abc news. it warns that as of last year, al qaeda considered targeting u.s. trains on the upcoming 10th anniversary of september

11th. >> if they can get to one location that's not well-guarded and put explosives on it or do something to cause the train to derail, that's a lot easier than going after an aircraft. >> reporter: officials say this railway plan still seemed to be in its early stages. but it is a sign that bin laden was still involved in planning things to kill even more americans. rob and peggy? >> all right. emily schmidt in washington. thank you for that sobering report. >> absolutely. and the other big story this morning, those potentially record-shattering floodwaters spilling on the banks of the mississippi river. >> flood warnings are in effect from indiana and illinois, all the way down to louisiana. tens of thousands of folks are expected to evacuate, bracing from a disaster that could rival the great floods of the 1920s and '30s. here's steve osunsami. >> reporter: all along the mississippi river, they're running away from the water. >> it's a hard situation to deal with.

sometimes you just got to buck up and do it. that's where we're at right now. >> reporter: when the mighty mississippi finally crests next week at 48 feet, they're expecting a record flood here. and the water could sit for weeks. tommy crum has no flood insurance, has lived here since 1969, and he was moving everything out, preparing to lose his home. >> all of the furniture. two bedroom suit. tv. >> it's all coming out? >> it's all coming. all has to come out. going to get wet. can't afford to buy it back. >> reporter: from the air, a sewage plant in memphis, surrounded by water. for now, it's still working. the brisbane airport is under water. so are hundreds of homes and businesses. the rivers have flooded their banks so much, the loosahatchie river and the mississippi are now one. gary wright's house was caught between. is this a loss? >> i would think it would be, completely. i wouldn't think that old house would be worth fixing. but i don't know. >> reporter: the utility companies are already out,

moving their equipment higher up the poles to keep it all dry. e high. it's going to be high. we can't predict how high. just in case, we want to make sure to provide service. hopefully, when the water recedes and folks come back in. >> reporter: at the police academy, the home of search and rescue team, they had to move by boat. tommy crum told us it's all too depressing. breaks your heart. >> well, there's better days coming. >> reporter: steve osunsami, abc news, memphis. >> very tough. well, while the worst of that flooding disaster is still to come, millions of people across the south are still reeling from last week's deadly outbreak of tornados. they're still searching for the missing in seven states. the official death toll stands at 329. 42,000 people have registered with fema for federal aid. switching gears to political news this morning. the republican presidential challenge got off to a pretty slow start last night.

five less-well-known candidates took part in the first debate of the 2012 campaign in the early voting state of south carolina. they credited president obama for cornering osama bin laden. but predicted that a weak economy will cost him a second term. and at the white house, president and mrs. obama celebrated cinco de mayo with high-profile hispanic-americans last night. the president revealed that the first lady's favorite food is, indeed, mexican. he warned the party, quote, he did not want to get between michelle and the tamale. look out. i think that goes for a lot of people. tamales are pretty good. let's look at this morning's weather from around the country. a light sprinkle in the flooded mississippi valley. showers and thunderstorms from cleveland and pittsburgh, down to the carolinas. and florida. scattered showers, meanwhile, in northern new england. light rain across iowa, nebraska and minnesota. rain and mountain snow from seattle to great falls, montana. >> and we are looking at 67 degrees in billings. 83 in albuquerque. a scorching 99 in phoenix.

well, skyrocketing gas

prices may have hit their peak and could, now, start heading down. the reason? crude oil tumbled yesterday, below $100 a barrel, the lowest price in nearly two months. gasoline futures, which help determine pump prices, also fell 23 cents. >> i'm hopeful in average places prices will drop as much as 20 cents here in the next 7 to 10 days. >> all of this doesn't mean that we will see $2 gas again. instead, $3.50 per gallon could soon become the norm. well, those high gas prices could slow job growth this year. we'll get a new u.s. jobs report later this morning. it's expected to show that the unemployment rate remains unchanged. the uncertainty about jobs is rattling the overseas markets. tokyo's nikkei average lost about 1.5% today. hong kong's hang seng is down a little, as well. in london, the ftse opened slightly lower. on wall street, the dow fell yesterday on a drop in

commodities and a jump in unemployment. the nasdaq index was also down. walmart, the world's largest retailer, is again number one on the just-released fortune 500 list. but following the retail giant, in revenue, not surprisingly, are three oil companies, exxon mobil, chevron and conoco phillips. exxon was the most profitable company on the fortune list. just in time for the prime home buying season, mortgage rates are at their lowest level on the year. the average rate for a 30-year fixed rate loan is 4.71%. that's the same as back in january. it's not as low as it was in november, which was the all-time low record. usda says that americans spend half of their food budget in restaurants. among the factors, how much parents worked, their schedules. also, this surprised some of the researchers, how much dad eats out. fathers should be encouraged to eat healthier and also maybe eat at home. here's proof, now, that elvis really has left the building. for the first time in more than half a century, elvis not among the 1,000 most popular baby names.
