second. in memphis, the river is expected to crest tomorrow, 14 feet above major flood stage. more from jim ryan. >> reporter: the mighty mississippi is on the move. for millions who live along the length, the river is proving to be a dangerous neighbor. from southern illinois to the gulf of mexico, flood waters are engulfing homes inch by inch. >> most everything got wet. all the carpet will have to come out. the walls are going to have to be redone. >> when it comes down to it, we're being devastated. >> reporter: in memphis, the mississippi has risen to 47.4 feet. the second highest level ever. testing the city's old levees and wooden flood gates. it's expected to crest tuesday at 48 feet. thousands are be urged to find higher ground. some won't budge. >> we've been living here all our life. i don't want to go nowhere. >> reporter: this man and his family were the last to evacuate

their mobile home park. >> my trailer is higher than anybody else's around here. i wanted to stick it out as long as i could. >> without our church, we wouldn't know what to do right now. >> reporter: this is a trial by water. >> our son is 6. he asked to go home yesterday. i tried to explain, we can't go home. the water is so bad. >> reporter: up and down the river, residents are pulling together, packing sandbags and piling them up. hoping they'll hold off the water. the flooding has forced road closures in at least three states. once the mississippi crests, the high water is expected to linger for days. jim ryan, abc news, memphis. >> we'll have more on the flooding throughout the day, beginning with "good morning america." tonight, diane sawyer will anchor "world news" from memphis.

>> any time you talk about a flood, you have to be focused on the weather. thunderstorms across the upper midwest and dakotas. chicago, milwaukee and des moines could get rain. a few inches of snow from the cascades to lake tahoe. showers in the pacific northwest. >> 71 in sacramento. 85 in phoenix. dallas, 92. omaha, 88. 71 in new york city. 87 in atlanta. 90 in miami. the other major story is the growing pressure on pakistan over the osama bin laden raid. >> the u.s. wants to interview the three widows that bin laden left behind. they're in pakistani custody. emily schmidt joins us with more. good morning, emily. >> reporter: good morning. after months of intelligence gaerting gathering, the president said he had what he called a 55-45 situation. no definitive proof that bin land was in that compound.

now is experts are working through what that all means. president obama said the 40 minutes he waited to see if the navy s.e.a.l.s found bin laden were some of the longest minutes of his life. >> it was a very tense situation. >> reporter: but he told "60 minutes" that the chance to get bin laden outweighed the risks. the situation raised questions of a support network there. >> we don't know whether there might have been some people inside of government, people outside of government. and that's something that we have to investigate. >> reporter: a senior pakistani official tells abc news that based on years of experience, he believes that elements of pakistani intelligence, probably rogue of retired were involved in aiding, abetting, sheltering the leader of al qaeda. >> fess up. if you knew he was there, tell us. >> reporter: this weekend, the

louis. people heard a scream from the front of the plane. it sounded so frightening, they thought it was a terrorist attack. >> about 20 minutes out of houston, the individual jumped out of his seat, ran to the front of the plane, and tried to touch and open the l-1 door, saying, i have to get off the plane. >> i go running. i see this guy with his hands on the door, two guys trying to hold him. the guy was a bull. i jumped on his back. put him in a choke. >> americans are not going down like that anymore. the men were all up and out in a minute, getting him subdued. >> unbelievable. well, that unruly passenger was eventually subdued. later questioned by federal cials. so far no charges have been filed. a bittersweet story of survival. a canadian woman stranded forsen weeks in a remote part of idaho was found alive. >> doctors say she was within

days of dying from lack of nutrition. david muir has the details. >> reporter: albert and ruth left their home seven weeks ago. they planned to make the 1200-mile drive to las vegas to trade show. these videos show them at a convenience store. it was sometime after this that their van got stuck on a remote logging road. after three days, albert set out to try to get help. days went by, their children new something was wrong. they hadn't heard from their parents. they asked for help. >> wherever they are, they're not safe. they would contact us if they were going to be delayed. >> reporter: their words set off a massive search over three states. all the while, ruth was in the van in the cold. temperatures well below freezing at night. surviving on a handful of trail mix and melting snow, and keeping a diary for her family, so they would know what

happened if she and her husband did not survive. it was friday that hunters found the van and ruth inside. now she and the rest of the family praying they'll find albert. >> never give up never lose your faith. and, yeah, i -- miracles happen. and never underestimate that. >> reporter: david muir, abc news, new york. >> stuff story there. two pilot whales are swimming once again. in deeper waters after a massive rescue operation. they were among 2 11 whales that beached themselves last week. unfortunately, most of them could not be saved. >> there are others still being watched over by vets to see if they can survive. >> using special tags to track their whereabouts. hopefully, we learn more. >> it would be nice to see some of them survive. prices going through the roof. not even talking about new cars, that's in the business news. there will be a new nba champion this year.
