. >> alan: the 100th bay to breakers race escaped the brunt of the storm that swept through this morning, about it didn't escape the watchful eye of the law enforcement tough new restrictions were being enforced, and we're live along the route. so, did it put a damper on the party? >> reporter: depends on who you asked. a lot of folks who are kind of recovering from their drunken student student for, so they're feeling no pay. on the other hand a number of folks are in police custody. they're probably not feeling so great right now. here's the preliminary numbers we got from police. 25 arrests. most of them for public drunkenness. for the partyers who managed to

>> alan: thank you. that storm that moved through the bay area forced the cancellation of the first stage of the amgen tour of california today. several inches of snow fell in the sierra overnight. this is what it looks like in lake tahoe right now at the heavenly mountain ski resort, a winter weather advisory is in effect until 11:00 tonight. amgen tour officials delayed the start of the cycling race, then shortened the first stage, but the riders decided the high winds, icy road, and snowfall made for unsafe conditions so they cancelled the first stage. organizers are new considering starting the second stage in squaw valley tomorrow. there were also scattered bouts of hail around the bay area today. >> alan: many of our viewers sent it videos and photos of the surprise hail storm. you can site came down hard in

napa. in mountain view, brad caught some hail pellets on his sleeve at lunchtime. leigh glaser has the latest. >> leigh: we also had numerous lighting strikes, especially in the sacramento valley. you can clearly see thing before of the rain has move to the east. we'll go in closer. just a few little spotty showers here and there. but, folks, second round is due in here by this time tomorrow, and that could possibly mean delays for the amgen race again, as they head into monday night and tuesday. definitely the statements -- staged expected on tuesday. rainfall totals 24 hours, pretty good. santa rosa, over a quarter of an inch. san francisco, a quarter inch. lesser amounts towards the east bay. more rain in the forecast. >> alan: now, late today, officials issued a tsunami alert

for parts of papua new guinea after a significant earthquake struck off the coast. the 6.5 quake struck at 10:30 this morning beneath the sea floor. therewere no immediate reports f casualties or damage, tsunami in 1997 killed 3500 people on the mainland, the company sits on the pacific ring of fire, hot spot for seismic activity because of friction between the tectonic plates. senator dianne feinstein says she has seen the death photos of osama bin laden, and she still believes they should not be made public. feinstein saw the photos on friday atcry cia headquarters in langley, virginia, she says viewing them has not changed her mine about not releasing them publicly. the cia briefed her five months ago that bin laden had been tracked to a compound in pakistan. they also told her about the

navy seal raid a day before it happened. feinstein says she viewed the death photos reluctantly after colleagues and others pressed her to do so. the mother of injured giants fan brian stow says she has no resentment for dodger fans or the city of los angeles. stow's stamly conclude family held a press conference in los angeles. tomorrow he will be moved to san francisco general. his mother, ann stow, thanked the city of los angeles for is support. >> this press conference is bittersweet, because we're taking brian home. so, on behalf of our family, we would like to say thank you to the community that has embraced brian and supported him. >> alan: stow is being traps federal to san francisco general because of its trauma center. he will be treated by the chief of neurosurgery who specializes in brain and spinal coward -- spinal cord injury. doctors say he is stable enough

>> alan: the head of the international monetary fund is denying charges he sexually assaulted a hotel maid in new york city. dominic strauss-kahn is set to be rained -- arraigned in new york. the maid picked strauss out of a lineup. >> the arrest went down like a scene from a movie. a politician yanked from his seat moments before his flight took off for paris. dominique strauss-kahn, now charged with three crimes.

his lawyer told us strauss-kahn denies them all. his trouble started saturday when a housekeeper came to clean his $3,000 a night suite. the woman thought it was empty. police say strauss-kahn emerged naked from the bodily harm and attacked her. he she fought him off, only to be dragged back into the bathroom. she finally escaped. by the time police arrived strauss was gone. and it appeared he left in a hurry. his cell phone was found in the room. in 2004, the married father of father had an affair, and his rumor of sexual ask paids have escapade in france is known. >> he already had his sexual problem with another lady. so a second time. >> these latest accusations have touched off a political tsunami

opened for the first time. the 450,000 square foot hospital opened it doors this morning. patients from the old mills hospital will slowly be transferred over to the new, more seismically safe building. the new facility includes upgrades like wireless patient monitoring and private rooms with followedout couches, and it's designed so remain fully operational even after a magnitude 8.5 earthquake on the nearby san andreas fault. >> federal authorities opened three more flood gates of louisiana's morganza spillway. they're trying divert water from the mississippi river to save new orleans and baton resume from flooding. the river has crested at 17 feet above stage in new orleans. here's more. >> reporter: four flood gates are now open at the time morganza spill we were. the mississippi river is rushing

three mile lake area. if the residents refuse to leave, they will not be forced out of their homes but they will not be checked on again. abc news, louisiana. >> alan: back here, we're experiencing a little break before more rain tomorrow. let's talk to leigh glaser for more on that. >> leigh: you're exactly right. we had one storm move through overnight last night and this morning. it's since started to push on towards the east. you can see the snow in the sierra. look at the lightning strikes, especially in the sacramento valley area. we get a little break tonight and then more rain moves in tomorrow. on closer inspection you can see just a few little drops here and there heading over the bay bridge right now, a little rain shower over there, oakland and berkeley, moraga. so we'll have a chance of a few lingering showers in the forecast tonight. the bulk of this first system has moved out of the area. temperatures right now, we're in the mid-to-upper 50s. san francisco right now, 57.

funding. >> wounded congresswoman gabrielle giffords has arrived in florida for tomorrow's launch of the space shuttle endeavour. here's a live picture of the shuttle on the launch pad. giffords flew in on a nasa shut jett and -- jet, and the weather looks good for the launch at 5:56 a.m. our time. giffords' husband, astronaut mark kelly, is the commander of the shuttle mission. the crew includes a san jose native. this is giffords' second trip to florida to see the launch. it was delayed last month because of electrical problems. giffords was shot in the face in january but has been making a remarkable recovery. >> that does it for us at 5:00. thanks for joining us. our next newscast is at 6:00 p.m. see you then.
