plain disturbing. but perhaps the hardest thing to fathom about arnold schwarzenegger's situation is this -- two families not just simultaneously but under one roof. granted, a sprawling roof. here's maria shriver, pregnant with schwarzenegger's youngest son, christopher. here's mildred patty baena, the housekeeper, pregnant with a son younger still. birth records show her son was born less than a week after christopher schwarzenegger. so close in age that in a christmas photo taken in 2000 and obtained by tmz there's arnold, there's the housekeeper, but the little boy on her knee? could be christopher or could be her son. arnold's secret son. from the very start of his public service, schwarzenegger was already living a double life. >> and i know how many votes i got today because of you. yes. >> reporter: publicly fawning

over his wife, but harboring a secret with a housekeeper that would potentially meant the undoing of his political career and his family. patty baena worked during her pregnancy, meaning the two women must have more than just crossed paths in that brentwood mansion. before they were pregnant, while they were pregnant and after. schwarzenegger's kids probably knew their half brother and were none the wiser. as for the women in arnold's life, one knew his secret, the other didn't. tough to imagine pulling it off, let alone pulling it off for 14 years. baena filed for separation from her husband three weeks after her son was born. on the birth certificate she had listed her then-husband as the boy's father. but in the court filing, less than a month later for the dissolution of marriage, she checked the box stating that she and her husband had no children together. irreconcilable differences was

the reason given. irreconcilable, indeed. >> let's protect the california dream for all californians. >> reporter: as a republican governor, schwarzenegger was never a family values man. he was more of a california libertarian, fiscally conservative, but live and let live. but he did like to stress the importance of good parenting. here he is at the silicon valley chamber of commerce last year, bemoaning the state of education. >> this is all a lack of parenting. if the parents would do like i did, the homework with the kids and work with the kids and read with the kids and do those things with the kids it would be a whole different ball game. >> reporter: you have to wonder, how involved was he with his secret son, then 13? >> does the child even know that arnold schwarzenegger is the father? has he ever been told? has he been told some other story? what's his understanding of who his father is or where his father has been for ten years? >> reporter: schwarzenegger did

offer financial support. last spring, the week he voted the california primary for his successor, his housekeeper was buying this $270,000 retirement home in the affluent polo club neighbor in bakersfield. that's their house over there? >> that's their house over there. >> reporter: today we met the next-door neighbor, martie steelman. she told us the local realtor couldn't help gossiping that the buyer has some help with the financing. >> she said, well, we're just waiting for the money now that arnold's buying the property for one of his staff that is retiring. >> reporter: that's what the realtor said? >> that's what the realtor told us. >> reporter: interesting. she says she's disgusted she ever voted for schwarzenegger. most of all, she just feels sorry for the boy. >> he is the innocent one in this whole thing. >> reporter: and she says, best she can tell, he had no idea that this man was actually his dad.

the one that was organizing everybody else to do things. >> they wanted to see and judge for themselves just how bad things are here. >> reporter: a natural broadcaster, she started working as a local reporter and anchor 35 years ago, ending up in hartford, connecticut. she married and divorced and had two children kirby and will, who she is devoted to. now that they're grown, it seems she's putting all her effort into work. >> i did used to know how to dress myself and lotion my legs. i really did. for 56 years i used to know how to do this. >> reporter: viewership of her current show is still small. only about 100,000. but king thinks in a year or so she could be topping a million. >> do you think oprah would fire you if it didn't work? >> well, you know, never say never. i'm not going to say that. i'm not going to act like i have job security. i think if she doesn't think the show is working, and i don't think that would necessarily be based on a number, but if she doesn't think the show is

"my muslim people, we watch closely what is going on in the world today. we rejoice with your rejoicing and your pride."

u.s. officials believe this is the same audio navy s.e.a.l.s recovered at bin laden's compound when he was killed. it is more evidence that bin laden was able to quickly get messages to operatives in the field. this comes as abc news has learned that u.s. officials have discovered the names and phone numbers of suspected al qaeda operatives in a huge cache of documents at bin laden's compound. an intensive international effort has been launched to determine if the names are real or aliases, with the u.s. calling on allies like great britain and canada to help. >> they're under a lot of pressure to resolve and identify these people as quickly as possible. >> reporter: travel records are being searched to see if any of these people have entered the u.s. already. a special task force set up on the grounds of cia headquarters to exploit the bin laden files is working 24/7. >> what they need to find is, who did he pass this information off to? who were the trusted agents who were expected to execute his intent? >> reporter: one reason there is so much concern is that analysts poring over the bin laden files have found a number of

references indicating he was pushing his organization to launch an attack on u.s. soil on or before the tenth anniversary of 9/11. officials emphasize that no specific imminent plot has been uncovered. but some analysts are worried that such a plot may already be in motion. the reason? al qaeda attacks typically are months in the making. 9/11 took more than two years to conceive and execute. now it's a race against time to figure out if the bin laden files were simply his aspirations or did someone in the field decide to put his murderous dreams in motion? for "nightline," i'm pierre thomas in washington. >> it is a story we will continue to follow closely. and finally tonight, a mug shot has been released of dominique strauss-kahn who is accused of attempting to rape a hotel maid last saturday. his lawyers are expected to present a new bail appeal in the morning.
