his life. >> thank you so much. we are following a developing story out of pakistan. americans were the apparent target of a car bomb blast in the city of peshawar. it marks the first taliban attack on westerners since the u.s. raid that killed osama bin laden. the bomb exploited near a pair of armored u.s. consulate vehicles killing a pakistani bystander. one american was also slightly hurt. the war in afghanistan is delivering a big blow to u.s. troop morale. up to 80% of soldiers and marines say they had seen a friend killed and half say they killeden enemy fighter. they say they're suffering from the highest rates of mental healthince 2005. military doctors blame it on the dramatic increase in fighting. the stage is set for a tense confrontation at the white house today. president obama is meeting with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu about stalled mideast peace talks. now, in his policy speech,

at the state department, president obama surprised israel by endorsing an independent palestinian. this is based on the 1967 six-day war. well, before leaving israel this morning, prime minister minister netanyahu rejected that idea as indefensible and would spell disaster for the jewish state. it's the cold case that's been playing investigators since 1982. who was behind that poisoned tylenol that killed seven people in chicago? armchair detectives have long pointed the finger at ted kaczynski, the unabomber. and now the fbi is investigating a possible link. here's pierre thomas. >> reporter: it was a national nightmare. someone was lacing tylenol with cyanide. seven people murdered in chicago in the fall of 1982. >> cyanide contains tylenol. >> this product may be contaminated with cyanide and should be destroyed. >> reporter: it dominated headlines. >> a nationwide search is under way today to find a man and a woman wanted for questioning in the tylenol murders.

>> reporter: a case that literally changed the way americans shop. the tylenol scare prompted the nation's first mass recall of a retail product. tamper-proof medicines now a fact of life. three decades later the case remains unsolved. now a shot in the dark. the unabomber terrorized the country for 18 years. >> sir, are you responsible for these bombings? >> reporter: injuring 23 people and killing 3 in a series of mail bombings. as it turns out, kaczynski grew up in the chicago area where the tylenol attacks happened. four of his bombings took place there between 1978 and 1980. sources tell abc news giving kaczynski's ties to the region, the fbi requested a sample of his dna to compare to evidence recovered in the case. so how did we find out about this? the government had planned an online auction to sell items from the unabomber's montana cabin. the infamous hood and es, his tu sunglasses, his typewriter used to write the manifesto. kaczynski has defiantly objected to the sale filing a handwritten motion asking a federal judge to block it. pierre thomas, abc news, washington.
