his life. >> thank you so much. we are following a developing story out of pakistan. americans were the apparent target of a car bomb blast in the city of peshawar. it marks the first taliban attack on westerners since the u.s. raid that killed osama bin laden. the bomb exploited near a pair of armored u.s. consulate vehicles killing a pakistani bystander. one american was also slightly hurt. the war in afghanistan is delivering a big blow to u.s. troop morale. up to 80% of soldiers and marines say they had seen a friend killed and half say they killeden enemy fighter. they say they're suffering from the highest rates of mental healthince 2005. military doctors blame it on the dramatic increase in fighting. the stage is set for a tense confrontation at the white house today. president obama is meeting with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu about stalled mideast peace talks. now, in his policy speech,

at the state department, president obama surprised israel by endorsing an independent palestinian. this is based on the 1967 six-day war. well, before leaving israel this morning, prime minister minister netanyahu rejected that idea as indefensible and would spell disaster for the jewish state. it's the cold case that's been playing investigators since 1982. who was behind that poisoned tylenol that killed seven people in chicago? armchair detectives have long pointed the finger at ted kaczynski, the unabomber. and now the fbi is investigating a possible link. here's pierre thomas. >> reporter: it was a national nightmare. someone was lacing tylenol with cyanide. seven people murdered in chicago in the fall of 1982. >> cyanide contains tylenol. >> this product may be contaminated with cyanide and should be destroyed. >> reporter: it dominated headlines. >> a nationwide search is under way today to find a man and a woman wanted for questioning in the tylenol murders.

>> reporter: a case that literally changed the way americans shop. the tylenol scare prompted the nation's first mass recall of a retail product. tamper-proof medicines now a fact of life. three decades later the case remains unsolved. now a shot in the dark. the unabomber terrorized the country for 18 years. >> sir, are you responsible for these bombings? >> reporter: injuring 23 people and killing 3 in a series of mail bombings. as it turns out, kaczynski grew up in the chicago area where the tylenol attacks happened. four of his bombings took place there between 1978 and 1980. sources tell abc news giving kaczynski's ties to the region, the fbi requested a sample of his dna to compare to evidence recovered in the case. so how did we find out about this? the government had planned an online auction to sell items from the unabomber's montana cabin. the infamous hood and es, his tu sunglasses, his typewriter used to write the manifesto. kaczynski has defiantly objected to the sale filing a handwritten motion asking a federal judge to block it. pierre thomas, abc news, washington.

it does look like we're in for another busy hurricane season. government forecasters are predicting up to 18 named storms. six of the ten of them are expected to be hurricanes and three to six could be considered major ones with winds topping 110 miles an hour. the atlantic hurricane season runs from june 1st to november 30th. and now for a look at your morning weather around the country. severe storms in the plains wite a chance of tornadoes, baseball-size hail and 80-mile-an-hour winds from dallas to oklahoma city, kansas city and omaha. showers and thunderstorms from minneapolis to billings and up to 6 inches of snow in the rocky mountains. cloudy with scattered showers from washington, d.c. up to northern new england. >> and 67 degrees in boston. 71 here in new york. just shy of 90 degrees in miami. mostly 70s across the midwest. phoenix warms up to 86. sacramento, 77 and salt lake coming in at 61. the neurosurgeon who just operated on wounded congresswoman gabby giffords is now calling her gorgeous gabby. >> very nice.

most overseas markets are up this morning. tokyo's nikkei average lost a small amount. and the ftse opened higher, and the dow was up 0 the nasdaq index gained about the same. well, some of the dow's gain was linked to linkedin. shares did go public yesterday and just within a couple of minutes they were selling at twice the value set by the company. that's pretty good news for other networking sites planning to go public in the near future. those are facebook, twitter and groupon. well, e-book sales are surging. amazon says it sells more digital books than traditional ones thanks to its kindle. barnes & noble is seeing the same trend although its portion of e-books isn't quite as high just yet but analysts say

overall hard copy books still outsell e-books and will continue to do so for awhile. >> that's right. well, it might be a good time to sell your car. used car prices are now at a 16-year high, and matt gutman shows us how much certain models are now worth. >> right now as far as the prices go, you won't get a better price for your used car. >> reporter: some models are up nearly 30% since the beginning of the year. a lot of that has been fueled by the quest for cars that don't use much fuel. take, for example, that toyota prius in your driveway. a 3-year-old prius is worth $4,100 more today on january 1st. camrys and ford focuses are not far behind, almost $3,000 more. but it's not just fuel efficient vehicles. take a 3-year-old ford explorer. had it sold in 2007, it would have gone for about $7,100. if you sold your 3-year-old ford explorer today, twice as much. over $14,000. but analysts says cash in while you can because after a 16-year high, there's only one directio
