in the news this saturday morning, thousands of firefighters, police and san francisco residents turned out to say their farewells to two firefighters. police conduct a large search for missing nursing student michelle le. >> good morning. 51 degrees downtown. 53 in oakland and we'll see a cooler day today. >> some 5,000 firefighters will be returning home today after coming to san francisco for the funeral of two city firefighters killed in the line of duty. an emotional service brought the brotherhood of firefighters together for the families of vincent perez and anthony valerio. ♪

>> reporter: it was a solemn memorial and celebration of firefighters' lives at st. mary's. there are no words that can describe the pain and hurt we feel. there are no words that can do justice to the sacrifice that was made. >> that sacrifice happened when two firefighters died during a fire at diamond heights last week. it was standing room only. the cathedral was filled with men and women in uniform. they described the men dedicated to their job and saving lives. >> on the outside, vincent's life was different. he was more reserved and serious. tony was out going but they shared unwillingness to give up on things they believed. >> reporter: oakland police sergeant praised had camaraderie

of the engine company. >> the amount of love in that firehouse was overwhelming. i knew right then, no question, my brother went to battle with the best of the best. i wouldn't have had him with anyone else. >> brian, a fellow paramedic years ago. he shared fond memories. >> we volunteered at the haight-ashbury team so we could get into a rock concerts for free. >> they shared with ever their loss of his friend for 30 years. >> we love you and our lives will never be quite as fun you will live forever in all of our hearts. them to the fire rux that would carry them to the cemetery in colma. they formed a mile long procession through the city. >> 1220 firefighters have died in the line of duty in the last ten years, half of those in northern california and most of those in the greater bay area. every san francisco firefighter on ho wanted to attend the service was able to because of the kindness of colleagues from all over the bay area. crews stepped up to fill the gap and provide fire protection. they received a crash course yesterday morning to learn about the city's unique layout. >> san francisco, the buildings are right on top of each other, we've got the hills, wires, the trees and wind. we don't attack the fire immediately on the inside of the building we'll lose that building but we might lose the whole block. >> they got a test, when a fire

erupted in a church in the ocean side district. if you in missed our coverage yesterday, we have posted at abc7news.com along with a slide show and a link to our facebook page where you are invited to leave a comment. police conducted a large search for missing nursing student michelle le. they covered a 30 square mile in southeastern alameda county. they chose the area based on evidence recovered during the investigation. the 35-member team used dogs and investigators but no body was found. she was last seen 15 days ago. they say they will continue to work on leads and analyze evidence over this weekend. >> former bart police officer johannes mehserle is due to be released from jail by order of a judge. oscar grant's family will join other families for a protest, stop killer cops.

judge rontd perry monday will be the new point of the two-year sentence for involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 shooting death of oscar grant. the judge says mehserle is entitled to one day prison sentence effectively completing and getting the rest of the time off for good behave. grant's family wanted to see him convicted of murder. >> we are not expecting the kinds of crowds in the past should there be, people from outside the town mostly who uses this as vandalism. war not expecting that again but should there be, we are prepared police on call and overtime. >> vandalism erupted in a protest following the verdict in mehserle's trial. that was last july. >> an internal memo contradicts claims made by alameda firefighters why they didn't try

to save a man that tried to commit suicide in san francisco bay. he drowned as firefighters stood by. firefighters say they couldn't go in because they had not been certified for water rescue as a result of funding cuts. but our media partner found a memo stating that funding had been approved in march of 2009. >> the fact that they left la lapse for 26 months is inconceivable to me, especially when it's in writing. >> the city and fire department are refusing to comment. a large piece of scaffolding on to a car on the outer sunset district last evening. it toppled on to ortega street. nobody injured, but police had to rope the area off and keep people far away from the scaffolding. firefighters joined construction workers in cleaning up the zbles

a mother who left her toddler in the car while shopping could face charges. the woman left she left the window cracked open and ran in the store for a couple minutes yesterday, but another woman saw the boy couldn't get his attention so she called 911. >> the baby wasn't responding and i ran into the store so somebody could get the baby, security guard happened to be driving by. they pulled the window down. >> the toddler was just sleeping. he is okay. he was taken to the hospital. crews questioned the mom but did not arrest her. it's up to the district attorney to decide her with child endangerment. >> san jose police say up to 50 people were involved in a brawl on thursday night. several people were hurt and investigators are trying to piece together exactly what happened. katie hammer reports. >> now that the weather has eat heated up so is the violence in san jose. >> words were exchanged.

it escalated into an all out melee, knives were produced and number of people were stabbed. >> he is describing what took place thursday evening in mcdonald's parking lot after the concert in the park event. >> i think bee had a lot of young people downtown but there could have been alcohol involved that touched off an altercation. >> they are not saying whether the brawl was related but there was gang. the fight was between hispanic and african-american teens. several were injured including two teens who suffered serious stab wounds. some area today were oblivious to the overnight event. >> the courthouse is right there it's kind of shocking. i never heard of that in the area before. >> employees surrounding the area did not want to go on camera but they say large groups

crew reported smoke in the cabin. those fumes dissipated before the plane touched down. firefighters responded as a precaution and the plane taxied over to a gate at terminal "c". all the passengers are fine. now for the latest twist involving congressman anthony wiener, they are investigating messages he sent to and received from a 17-year-old high school girl. local police in delaware visited the home of the 17-year-old to talk to her mother and request access to the girl's phone and computer. at issue, five messages to congressman reportedly sent to the underage girl, through a spokesman, he admitted he did exchange messages with the girl, but the spokesperson added, quote, his communications with this person were neither explicit or indecent. the family member called the messages, harmless, but they were concerned that the

congressman had communicated with her at all. contact started in april after the girl's class too took a trip to washington and saw wiener speak. she posted a public message to him on twitter, she enjoyed the speech. two days later, wiener begin following her on twitter. her profile said she wanted to be president. she wrote to her, how hip am i talking to a future president? he indeed and admitted he sent lewd photos to women through social media but he did not know their exact damaging. >> i don't know the ages of the women. i am going to respect their privacy. >> he said his acknowledge was based what the women said on the online profile. he was not available for comment as the story broke. >> last time he did talk was in new york. >> trying to get work now, make

could spread into new mexico today. strong winds are expected to kick up again today. they are battling the fire and. working in blast furnace heat, ground crews are fighting fire with fire, scorching trees and brush hoping to gain an advantage over a blaze that still has the upper hand. this giant d.c. 10 tanker has helped slow the blaze but today it may gust to alarming speed posing a challenge to thousands of firefighters. >> they are from the angeles national forest and they have been working in 16-hour shifts. there have been several homes lost in the area but firefighters have been able to save most of them. >> scenes like these is why 10,000 evacuees will have to wait to get home. >> they struggled to break

winds that coast. airport delays of 45 minutes and we are looking at numbers all in the 50s. 53 in san francisco, 56 in mountain view as well as san jose. we are looking at conditions to stay pretty breezy today at our coast. right now, northwesterly winds blowing at 23, gusting to 23, gusting to 31 at the airport. gusts over 20 miles an hour by the delta, calm winds up to novato and santa rosa. we will be looking at temperatures coming down thanks to this area of low pressure that will increase the winds, keeping the rain at bay. this upper level trough, northern half of the state, definitely feel the effects of breezy wind. live doppler 7-hd shows we are looking at no rain in the bay area, with this system, the sea breeze will allow for winds anywhere out of the west, up to 20-30 miles an hour. we will be looking at

temperatures all around the bay today, definitely be on the cooler side. san francisco, 62 degrees. normally we should see highs in the upper 60s, oakland mid 60s and then along our coast, half moon bay, bodega bay, all in the upper 50s. definitely need a light jacket out there and things will be fine after that. 70 today in san jose and that is down from our average, 74 in concord with 76 in our inland valleys. up to the north, mid to upper 70s here. with the mix and clouds and sun it's feeling pretty good out there. looking at temperatures in the 60s today for the most part with mid-70s as you head out to contra costa county and in the south bay, just in the low 70s. upper elevations, you'll be dealing with those winds out of the west-northwest and then with

california's political landscape scape may change dramatically. a panel has released the first proposed changes and as carolyn tyler reports, the bay area doesn't escape their plans. >> the panel charged with changing the state's election borders released the first map detailing how to change the political landscape. back in 2008 they created the california's redistricting commission. the 14-member panel has the task of changing the districts and putting an end to districts designed to favor one party over the other. they tend to be over geographic lines but take race into consideration, as well.

>> but to change the landscape, in certain areas of the state it really changes. >> political analyst, bruce cain. >> when you get to southern california, eastern los angeles county there a tremendous changes such that a lot of incumbents don't have any recognizable district and to have run differently. >> overall the political leanings won't change much because the borders of the districts in the bay area may shift only slightly. congress the impact may be more dramatic. republicans stand to lose as many as four seats in congress, mostly from the changes in southern california. the map set up a potential battle in napa and marin counties where political allies, lynn woolsey and miami thompson hold seats. it could tip them against each other in an election. cain says it could make liberal

leaning counties to be more moderate. >> congresswoman says, quote, redistricting commission has dismissed the mandate and violated its own guidelines. she says her constituents are more in line with sonoma county than north coast communities. final map is due august 15th. on monday, president obama will travel to north carolina to meet with his job council. he says he will work with them on steps the government can produce hiring in the private sector. >> one thing that government can do is partner in the private sector to make sure that every worker has the necessary skills for the job they are applying for. on wednesday, i announced commitments by the private sector, colleges and the national association of manufacturers, that will make it possible for 500,000 community

fire crews got real life fire training when one burn jumped the containment line. they will be reminding folks to close your doors and windows to wednesday morning because a all that smoke in the air. and lisa argen joins us with what kind of conditions now until they start the controlled burns. >> we're talking warmer but right now a little cool. winds are along the coast. clouds are beginning to break out. call it partly cloudy and temperatures are in the 50s. we've warmed up to the mid 40s for napa and los gatos and 54 in half moon bay. san francisco, 53. airport delays of 45 minutes with wind gusts to 31 miles an hour. it's also windy as you head out to concord and hayward. calm winds in parts of the north

bay. at the coast, persistent winds and marine layer is mixing out. partly cloudy skies, breezy winds today and a little bit warmer tomorrow. we've got a weak trough of low pressure that is bearing down on the bay area. as it exits, strong ridge of high pressure is going to build in that is going to build a heat wave in. notice all the low cloudiness along the shoreline. so the fog is hovering right around the san mateo coast today but we should see sunshine everywhere. temperatures, not going to be that warm. we're getting used to that with 50s and 60s and breezy winds, couple of 70s. this is just temporary because as soon as tomorrow we're getting on the back side of this system. but right now. it's providing the clouds. you can see it bearing down here. these echoes not producing any rain right now. just the cooling trend in terms of a couple degrees today.

that stronger sea breeze, san francisco, san mateo coast but also working to kind of shoo out that fog. and 66 in san diego, with 85 in fresno and snow melt going in the sierra nevada with numbers in the upper 70s. sacramento, 78 degrees and back home, look for upper 70s. 71 in campbell. peninsula numbers, upper 50s. use a light jacket if you are hanging out at the coast but otherwise partly cloudy skies. 62 in downtown and also at the airport warming to the low 60s. very breezy here. definitely kind of a chill in the air with 70s san rafael, 73 in sonoma. vallejo 71 degrees and a nice afternoon but a bit breezy. newark, 65 and inland valleys,

shipping container. >> from this shipping container, he saved enough money working as a plumer to move into the barn. he and his partners didn't know the first thing about wine making but his girlfriend who worked for a winery convinced him to open his own business. >> we basically learned from our own mistakes. we learned a lot. >> he manages other wineries and in turn they give him grapes to make his wine. for him, this a family business where he can take care of his military brothers and sisters. >> this is their safe haven. they are welcome here. i want them here. because we're all on the same page. >> the walls of this tasting room are decorated with service flags, medals and franchises. he wants to create jobs for veterans where they can find the same kind of camaraderie as in the military. so far he has hired 30 vets.
