morning, juneth, two protests planned in oakland today, hours before former police bart police officer johannes mehserle is to be released from jail. and an arson investigation is underway after a fourth grass fire in less than a week burns more than an abc newsner antioch. >> good morning. we have clouds around the bay. we will see clearing sooner and a bit warmer today. >> thank you, lisa. good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm carolyn tyler. two pro tests are planned today in oakland ahead of tomorrow's court-ordered release of former bart police officer johannes mehserle. mehserley spent a year in jail in los angeles county for the 2009 new year's day shooting death of oscar grant at the fruitvale bart station. grant was unarmed. his family thought mehserley

should have served a longer sentence. the first protest is set for 3:00 this afternoon at the fruitvale station and then a second gathering will give them a chance to speak out. that's at 14th and broadway. leeann suter spoke with oscar grant's family last night in los angeles. >> anger and outrage from oscar grant's family after learning the performer bay area rapid transit officer convicted of shooting the 22-year-old is set to be released from jail. the judge handling the case ruled johannes mehserle as served enough time and earned enough credits to warrant release. >> the judge, robert perry, is the reason why johannes mehserle is getting out in less than 11 months. it's painful us to as a family. there was no accountability, there was no justice in that courtroom. >> at an emergency town hall meeting at the members of collation for justice, they are

viesing their frustration, saying mehserle is receiving preferential treatment. >> he was sentenced to state prison and he never set a foot outside of the county jail. he did a country club bid. he did less than the time michael victorino did for the cruelty to animals. >> mehserley said he thought he was grabbing his taser to subdue grant who was unarmed but accidentally grabbed his gun. the case that sparked violent pro tests was moved to l.a. because of pretrial publicity. >> he is going to live for what he did and he's going to suffer from that. but our ultimate goal is to contact the department of justice and assist them in bringing criminal charges for civil rights violations. >> that was leeann suter reporting. in downtown oakland businesses covered their businesses with plywood to deter vandalism and

looting. the city officials say they expect it to remain peaceful but there will be extra police officers on duty. the los angeles times report that police sources are denying a television station's report of a blood-stained dodgers jersey, linking the suspect to beaten giants fan brian stow. a bloodstained jersey was handed over to investigators, but dna showed no match to the suspect or the victim, bryan stow. a dry-cleaner gave it to the l.a.p.d. shortly after someone brought it to his shop after the beating. that was on opening day at dodgers stadium. as you may know, stow remains in a coma at the hospital. ramirez is in jail on a parole hold and has not been formally charged with the crime. police continue to look for two other suspects in the case. starting at 2:00 this afternoon family and supporters of missing nursing student, michelle le, will distribute flyers in hayward. that's along misch boulevard.

a family statement says they will continue their efforts to find michelle since hayward police have not given them any conclusive evidence that she was murdered. hayward police say they do have evidence that le was murdered shortly after she vanished from kaiser medical center on may 27th. more than a half-dozen police searches over the past two weeks have failed to show up any sign of her." mark class of the class kids foundation plans to join the family today in the flyer distribution. >> alameda residents plan to wade chest deep at crown beach to show how easy it would have been to rescue a suicidal man who drown on memorial day. 53-year-old raymond zach died while police and firefighters stood by on the beach. they said they were obeying policy from entering the water because they lacked the proper training. that training is now being

reinstated. today in similar weather and tidal condition about ten people will wade into the water to show how easy it would have been for rescuers to reach the man from the shore. contra costa firefighters are investigating four suspicion fires in the last week of that threatened homes in antioch. homeowners say they have been dealing with threatening fires for the past three years. >> they burned that and today they came over here. >> william king is talking about the one acre grass fire that came this close to his home on point doom court. contra costa firefighters quickly put the fire out, but not before it damaged an outbuilding close to his home. the fire chief said they are suspicious. >> all three fires are suspicious in nature. they are along a walking path with easy access. so we are concerned about fire starting, one, this early in the season and, two, we do have somebody starting the fires. >> william king is concerned for his two young children. they have lived here of the past 8 years. for the past 3 he's worried

about his home being burned to the ground by more than one arsonist. >> this is like three years in a row it happened. this time it's like three days in a row. >> i went out there with a bucket, put water on from the pool and put as much out as we can until the fire department came. >> the blackened and charred spots in the park are where the four fires have been set, according to firefighters. much too close to the more than dozen homes that surround the park. for 16-year-old keith, these fires are getting pretty common. >> it seems like it happens every year. >> king said he saw someone running from a larger fire last year, but so far there are no suspects. because the fires have been a regular occurrence, the kings two children have their own fire duty. >> when there's a fire really close, first we alarm our parents, then we go over to our friend's house over there and wait until hits save enough to go outside. >> ring the doorbells of our neighbors and tell them there's

a fire. >> we would like to get this under control prior to the hot weather and before we do have any damage to homes. >> antioch police say they are stepping up patrols in order to find the arsonist. in antioch, abc7 news. firefighters all over northern california are bracing for the start of wildfire season. starting tomorrow cal fire will be opening up most of its seasonal fire stations. despite the heavy rains we've had, cal fire are asking home owners to take extra precautions now because there's an abundance of vegetation out there. the second largest fire in arizona history has burned 672 square miles. the flames have spread across the eastern border into new mexico. the fire has destroyed more than 30 homes since it broke out on may 29th. it also threatens two major power lines that deliver electricity from arizona to texas. this morning's mexico's

president, felipe calderon, will macha the commencement speech at stanford university. student leaders said they nominated calderon to talk about leadership in international cooperation and social justice. calderon was elected to a six year term in 2006. the 120th commencement ceremony starts at 9:30 this morning at stanford stadium. stanford east bay held graduation ceremonies yesterday. we spoke with new graduates that are about to enter a recession-plagued job market. >> fresh from commencement graduates are full of excitement. now comes the hard part. >> getting a job, it's going to be tough. it's going to be really, really tough, but i know that the business market and along with that faculty helps over here too so i have to look forward to starting out with an internship. nothing but smiles for new college graduation jinger sison

with the dollar bill ornaments draped over her gown. she's now a receptionist but eager to put her speech pathology degree to good use. >> have you found a job that you just got a job in? >> not yet. >> how has that search been? >> it's tough but i'm hoping i will get somewhere. >> she has a lot of company that are marching into one of the worst job markets in years. nationwide 90% of students who graduated in 2006 and 2007 had found a job by this spring, according to a rutgers university survey. but among graduates last year only 56% had found work. >> it was tough, but you always have to keep a lookout for things. that's the best way to do it. nothing is going to fall in your lap. >> i think it continues to be a challenging year. i don't see it changing. the key is you have to be able to differentiate yourself from others that are in the marketplace.

says he will take a leave of absence from the congress while he seeks treatment. that's according to national leaders. some want it to be permanent. they are calling for wiener to resign. this comes after revelation that is wiener had been sending messages to a 17-year-old girl on twitter. police visited her home to look at those messages and concluded there was no criminal or inappropriate contact by the congressman. >> nothing explicit, noggen decent, absolutely nothing inappropriate. >> a spokesman for the new york congressman said in a statement that wiener left yesterday morning to seek professional treatment to, quote, focus on becoming a better husband and healthier person." wiener has admitted to sending lewd photos and engaging in inappropriate online conversation with six woman. wounded arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords could leave the hospital next month. giffords continues to recover in huston after surviving a gunshot wound to her head in january.

the tucson democrat chief of staff tells the associated press giffords may leave the hospital by the end of this month or early july. that hospital specializes in caring for people who have suffered serious head injuries. the attack on giffords killed six people and wounded 12 others. several local companies are showing off their products made right here in the bay area and elsewhere in the u.s. this year san mateo county fair features an exhibit that is called "make it in america." it includes locally-made items like handbags produced in san francisco. other local products are sharing the stage with the new chevy volt electric car, which is assembled outside detroit. congresswoman jackie speer organized the exhibit. >> if we just spent $64 a year purchasing something that's made in america versus something that's made somewhere else, we would employ 200,000 people.

with the same old, same old. low clouds and fog. really tuesday will be the warmest day of the week. the warming trend being felled around the bay area tomorrow. roof camera showing the clouds. less wind so it will felonies out there but nothing too dramatic. we are looking at things changing coming up. 53 in red wood city. good morning mountain view, 55 there, as well as san jose with upper 40s for napa and santa rosa. we have winds out of the west at 20 miles an hour at the airport. but still our air mass is a couple degrees warmer, getting really towards normal. we've been so below normal for the past couple months. patchy clouds this morning and we will begin to see warmer days with temperatures in the mid-and upper 70s for the warmest locations in our warmest inland valleys. then the warming trend pretty much for everyone except right at the coast where we still will see a little bit of fog and numbers cool.

throughout the day today you will notice that the fog burns back quickly but the patches of fog are along the san mateo coast and monterey will be slower to clear. elsewhere we are looking at more widespread 70s, especially in north bay. 80s in the sacramento valley and that means upper 70s by the delta. but even 50s around ocean beach and half moon bay. here's the setup. the first system went through yesterday. that brought the wind and the cooler air mass. here's the next system. high pressure is going to deflect this system to the north. if you are in the sierra nevada, temperatures will will be held down and really this is going to allow for temperatures to be somewhat similar to yesterday. it's really tomorrow when the high begins to build on in. and so as a result, temperatures today just a few degrees within what we saw yesterday. but overall, that brings numbers in our central valley up to the low 80s." still cool in los angeles.

pg&e plans to pressure test a natural gas pipeline in newark today so residents may smell gas being vented from the system. it's all part of that state-ordered testing of pg&e's distribution system after the last september san bruno explosion that killed 8 people and destroyed 38 homes. today san francisco examiner said pg&e has tested nine pipeline segments so far and no pipes have buckled or sprung leaks. eight bay area pipeline sections have been tested today in six cities. san jose, mountain view, south san francisco, antioch, oakley and newark. >> in november san francisco voters will become the first in the nation to decide whether to outlaw circumcision for young boys but one one tactic they are using is generating outrage in

harold camping has been in the hospital since thursday night. the 28-year-old radio station owner suffered a stroke at his home in alameda. one of his neighbors told the times it affected his right side and caused his speech to be slurred a bit. camping's followers have donated millions to his nonprofit called family radio and he spent a lot of it on a media blitz telling everyone the world was supposed to end back on may 21st. hayward police are searching for a driver who ran down a teenager and then drove off. the 17-year-old girl was crossing owe toe road around 9 do 15 friday night when she was hit by a white car. the girl was taken to eden hospital. she has serious injuries. she is in stable condition. the car is described as possibly a toyota corolla or a volkswagen jetta. again, it was a white car. anyone with information is asked to call hayward police. it could be a challenging summer for school districts

across the state. they have to make sure all seventh through twelfth grade students are vaccinated against whooping cough. without that shot they will not be allowed to return to class in the fall. abc7's education reporter, explains the requirement. >> the state said it has good reason to require students in seventh grade through high school to be vaccinated against whooping cough. >> we are currently in an epidemic in california. we've had more cases this year and last year than we've had in over 60 years. >> it's now up to the school districts and local health departments to help parents get the vaccine their kids need. so far there have been six clinics held for san francisco public school students. still only 22% of them have been vaccinated. that leaves the district with a huge outreach task over the summer. >> we will be calling them and we will be getting the news out in various ways. the website will be updated daily.

flow. but the winds have definitely backed off. we saw gusts yesterday 30 miles an hour. the airport, still breezy winds but 55 in mountain view. it's 55 and upper 40s in napa and santa rosa. a couple degrees warmer this morning than we were yesterday morning. 3 degrees warming at the coast. but afternoon highs, well, they are going to slowly change. so the patchy cloudiness this morning gives way to sunshine this afternoon or partly cloudy skies. a few high clouds from time to time. warmer temperatures in the inland valleys today. elsewhere about the same, but a warming trend getting underway throughout the week, tomorrow and tuesday. in the inland valleys it will still be 80-degree temperatures on wednesday. cloudy skies are parting and the onshore flow once again at the coast but not as strong as yesterday. as a result some of the 60s, getting into the mid-70s out

in the midland valley and around napa valley. elsewhere still below normal throughout the peninsula and the coast. so we will look for a decent day today as the first trough passes to the east of us. so that's why the ridge of high pressure in the eastern pacific will be deflecting this second trough, and that's going to allow for the high to get established, move in a little bit more, and create the drying and warming trend that we've been talking about for the early part of the week. across the state, still looking more well to the south, but numbers well below normal in southern california, just 68 there. sounds like san diego weather at 67. 66 in the southern sierra. we are looking at cloudiness there. it was warmer yesterday, and by the middle of the week some rapid snowmelt going on in the northern sierra. so 90 with the breezy wind. 70 couper tino. maybe a degree warmer in the

receiving end of a wake-up call night after night. well, that's what happened to one bay area man, a problem he could not fix until 7 on your side's michael finney got involved. [phone ringing] >> dennis said it happened like clockwork every night. >> i'm in a dead sleep and the phone rings, like i say, religiously right around 3:30:00 in the morning. [phone ringing] >> it happened night -- [phone ringing] >> after night -- [phone ringing] >> after night. each time he would pick up the phone, no one would be on the other end. but dennis knew the cause almost immediately. >>at&t again. >> you see, this has happened to dennis once before, about a year ago. >> it scares you. the first thing you think is an emergency. >> the last time is appeared. at&t technicians check the phone lines that came into the house.

>> he said it had something to do with the test equipment, something having to do with the computers at at&t in their facility there. >> translation? there was some sort of a computer malfunction. this time at&t sent someone out to look at his phone lines again. the tech told him the problem was fixed, but that night dennis found out it wasn't. [phone ringing] >> after that he says he couldn't get anyone from at&t to call him back. he left numerous messages before calling 7 on your side. >> 7 on your side called them and they got on it right away. and i did get a voicemail that said the problem was resolved and it hasn't happened since. >> at&t declined an on-camera interview but in an e-mail wrote "it's rare that at times we have encounters a half ring on a phone line as we test circuits. we remove the phone number in question from the routine phone number circuit testing." >> makes me feel good somebody
