making news in america this morning -- embarrassing new photos surface of anthony weiner as he leaves to seek treatment. will this force from office for good? gabby giffords, behind the veil of her months in rehab. a smiling face, but now new details of her tough road ahead. and dallas is a championship city once again, with a final victory over miami's dream team. this morning, fans are celebrating around the world. good morning. when the house of representatives return to work today, anthony weiner will not be there. >> the new york democrat says that he is taking a leave of absence. and also getting professional help. party leaders say that's a good idea. but first, he should resign.

not helping his case, newly released from tmz.com show anthony weiner taking photos of himself in various stages of undress. we're told that they were taken on government property. in the house members' gym. the photos sent to several women. in addition to revelations that he traded messages with a 17-year-old delaware high school student, although those were deemed harmless. >> i have made some serious mistakes and i need to redeem myself and i'm working hard to try to get back to normal. and try to serve the people of my district the best i can. >> he should not be convicted in the press. if he violated a law, let him be convicted by a jury. >> reporter: the calls for weiner to resign are growing. >> he's a liar and i could never, ever believe anything that this man says. >> from some of his konstituents, to a number of his colleagues, the number two democrat in the house. >> it seems extremely difficult that he can proceed to represent

in an effective way given the circumstances of his bizarre behavior. >> reporter: he said that he'll take a leave of absence to seek treatment. many say that's not enough. >> we have made clear that he needs to resign, he needs to focus ones get his own personal issues in order. >> no indication from weiner about how long a leave of absence he plans to take. with these latest photos, for many, a quick resolution can't come soon enough. there's word that he may be getting the message and soon to be resign. he won't make a message until his wife returns from her oversea trip. she's due back on wednesday. newt gingrich restarted his campaign in los angeles, he had to fend off a mob of reporters by himself. his entire senior staff quit last night. he took a red eye flight to new hampshire. to the drama on the high seas. new york times reports that an american warship faced off on north korean ship suspected of carrying missiles.

is it safe to breathe? authorities today warned no, especially for the young, elderly and anyone with respiratory problems. >> it would best not to return to their homes until the concentration of smoke diminishes. >> reporter: robert and his family have been living at an evacuation center, is not taking a chance. >> the air quality is probably not good enough for our little one. fire burning not far from miami is nearly contained. now officials are warning that dangerous smoke could linger over the area for a week. the blaze has been raging for a week and has consumed more than 68,000 acres. it may have been sparked by a dirt bike. let's take a look at the weather. severe storms from the plains to the mississippi valley. gusty winds and hail. a chance of tornadoes around omaha, des moines and north of memphis. scattered showers from upstate

the dow opens this morning below 12,000 for the first time in months. economic reports due this week may not do much to lighten up the mood. we might see modest improvements in retail sales. manufacturing and housing. consumer sentiment survey comes out friday. it's expected to show a slight decline. on wall street the dow lost

almost 200 points. nasdaq index gave up 99. hong kong's hang seng is losing ground, too. thelondon, the ft lower. passengers are happier with the airlines this year. but not completely satisfied. j.d. power survey shows that overall satisfaction is up. but passengers still have concerns about fares and fees. only air canada and southwest improved in that category. overall, alaska airlines was tops among traditional carriers. apple is recalling a small number of verizon ipad 2s. they were inkrektdly coded making it difficult to logon to the verizon network. apple spokeswoman said all that all of the recall units will be replaced with new ones. super 8 had a super opening this week. the film was never intended to be a blockbuster, it took the top spot, though, with $37 million.

airport today, the only airport expected to face delays is kansas city. we're getting a closer look this morning at how well congresswoman gabrielle giffords is progressing. new photo was posted to her facebook page. >> for what she's been through, she looks terrific, her hair is shorter. here is bob woodruff. >> reporter: until today, the only picture we had seen of congresswoman giffords was this one. hand in hand with her husband, mark kelly. but now, for the first time since the shooting in tucson, we see her face. her characteristic smile, her upbeat spirit. the photos were taken by a professional photographer on may 17th, one day after she traveled to florida to witness her husband, the commander of the shuttle "endeavour," launch into space. along with the photos came the news that before the end of this month, congresswoman giffords will be released from the memorial hermann hospital and

continue her rehab as an outpatient in houston. this morning, one of her closest friends had this to say about her progress. >> she spoke to me in full sentences, initiated those sentences instead of just responding. she's making remarkable progress. you can see how beautiful she is. >> reporter: as for the big question looming about her returning to work, her chief of staff acknowledged this week that giffords has a long way to go. her words are back more and more now. she's still using facial expressions as a way to express. pointing, gesturing. carusone said. but when it comes to a bigger, and more complex thought that requires words, that's where she's had the trouble. giffords loved biking in her native arizona. one of her staffers told us today, we've known for a long time that gabby's recovery process would be more of a marathon than a sprint. bob woodruff, abc news, new york. >> police in indiana says tips
