papers. >> jonathan karl explains his public resignation statement turned out to be a rather freakish end to a once thriving political career. >> today i am announcing my resignation from congress. >> reporter: even in the end it was tawdry and awkward. >> i am here to apologize for the embarrassment i have caused. i make this apology to my neighbors and my constituents but i make it particularly to my wife huma. >> reporter: before it hit three weeks ago he was a brash rising tar in congress. >> you vote yes if you believe yes. >> reporter: considered to be the front-runner to be the next mayor of new york. weiner's claim he was hacked began to crumble when chris cuomo revealed more photographs he sent to another woman, 26-year-old megan broussard. >> said it was hot. i like to see someone who was

passionate about something. >> reporter: that prompted another bizarre press conference. >> it wasn't clear and i sent it. i never met any of these women. >> reporter: for days he continued to dig in pointing to polls showing the majority of his constituents did not want him to resign but his democratic colleagues weren't buying it. >> congressman weiner should resign from the congress. >> reporter: then the most damaging photos hit the tmz website over the weekend. he took them with his blackberry inside the intensely private members only house gym. in the end, he just had to resign. but even now in disgrace he's hinting at a political comeback. >> now i'll be looking for other ways to contribute my talents. >> reporter: his democratic colleagues in congress are happy to see those talents go elsewhere. i'm jonathan karl in washington. >> those democrats include president obama who talked about the now ex-congressman in an

before federal prosecutors were set to indict john edwards he was asking bunny mellon for millions of dollars. it's unclear why he would ask for money or whether such a request would be illegal since he's not running for office but mellon's campaign contributions to edwards in 2008 are the crux of the criminal case against him. he's accused of using those funds to cover up his affair with rielle hunter. to protect the tiny town of hamburg, iowa, take a look at this eight-foot earthen barrier. it is keeping several feet of water from flooding the town but the heaviest surge is yet to come. officials say they're not sure how well the levee will hold if water levels remain high for months. crews battling the largest wildfire in arizona's history are now facing a 50-mile-an-hour wind that is going to happen today. the governor is setting up for an aerial tour will happen today. a smaller one scorched nearly 10,000 acres. it is now about 30% contained. they've really been fighting that there.

the global economy shows no signs of lifting. fears that greece will default on its debt is bringing markets down again. tokyo's nikkei average was off 60 points today. hong kong's hang seng was also down, and in london the ftse opened lower. on wall street the dow gained 64 points yesterday. the nasdaq index lost nearly 8. well, one nontraditional bank is buying another. capital one best known as a credit cart issuer is acquiring ing direct a major on many line bank and brokerage for about $9 billion. that will make capital one the nation's fifth largest bank.

done with the first phase of the memorial dedicated to the victims of flight 93. the 9/11 memorial will include a marble wall bearing the names of each person killed in the crash. visitors will be allowed to get as close to the site as possible without actually touching it. the city of portland, oregon, is draining its main reservoir after a man was caught urinating in it. the nearly 8-million-gallon flush is costing taxpayers $36,000. 21-year-old josh cedar said he was drunk at the time and apologized for the incident, but he thinks the city went too far saying animals relieve themselves in the reservoir all the time. well, in medical news this morning the gap is widening in cancer death rates between college graduates and those with less schooling. the least educated died at rates nearly 2 1/2 times of that with men with college degrees. there's a similar trend with women in that group. the poll suggests that less educated people are more likely to take risks with their health.

fewer high school students are drinking soda. they're more likely to drink water, milk and fruit juices which was a surprise for centers for disease control. the bruins will parade the stanley cup for their fans tomorrow. in dallas yesterday, meanwhile, the new nba champion mavericks took their turn despite 90-degree heat. about 200,000 people showed up to cheer their heroes through the streets. there were just three arrests. earlier we saw a brief glimpse of u.s. open golf. now from some of the highlights from mike yam at espn news. good morning. we start on the greens. the u.s. open, it's the first round, tiger woods dealing with the achilles but maryland, phil mickelson, one of his biggest rivals turning 41, not exactly the birthday round he was hoping for. on 10, the tee shot, a little short there. and a little wet. mickelson double bogeyed and finished 3 over. masters champion, charles schwartzel, in contention here.
