in the news, june 18. thousands of passengers at s.f.o. are hoping to get in the air after a nationwide computer problem shut down united airlines last night. and concord police arrest a man they believe poisoned his neighbor's dogs. >> good morning. low clouds and fog with us to start the day. sunny afternoon. and a little bit warmer today. >> good morning. this morning, united airlines is working to clear a backlog of passengers whose flights were delayed or canceled last night by a nationwide computer glitch. the airline issued waivers if for travelers. the problem prevented the airline from checking baggage and that grounded flights system wide for five hours. abc7's lisa amin gulezian reports on the hundreds of frustrated travelers at s.f.o. >> not happy. trying to get home. >> a sentiment shared by thousands of stranded and united continental airline

passengers. system-wide computer outage interrupted flight departures, airport processing and the reservation system causing this. >> i only got the flight because i could get it on miles. i don't know if i'd fly with them again. i'm bummed. my dad is pissed. >> because you were going back for father's day? >> exactly. it happened at 5:15 p.m. pfk time, impacts flights at airports across the country. screens went dark or had words "united" written across it. frustration and confusion among passengers built, especially after some flights started moving out. united express planes started flying but only because they're smaller and on a different computer system. those with printed boarding passes could check their bags and go through security and then wait. >> we're guessing. do we give them our lugm and run the risk of being without our stuff for some period of time?

keep luggage and haul it around to find a place to stand or sit? it's just, kind of caught between a rock and hard place. >> many arrived at the airport with no idea what was happening. united only first acknowledged the problem through a tweet. >> i'm not on twitter. so i didn't get the tweet. >> the good news is that flights in and out of san francisco for both united and continental are flying again. at s.f.o., lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. concord police arrested a man they believe is responsible for poisoning neighborhood dogs with tainted meatballs. signs have gone up notifying people someone was poisoning jobs. that wasn't the only warning that some people received. abc7's tomas roman has more from concord. >> jacob lives across the street from the tovar home with the two small dogs were poiseped this month. >> i don't think, animals should pay for his, i don't know, perm problems or

whatever happens. whoever is doing is it not right in the head. >> tovarss could fwhot reached for comment and distributed this note this week and warned that someone was possibly putting poiseped meatball in yards of neighbor with dogs. and that is to blame for death of two of the family dogs. one of them with 2-year-old d.j. the tovars told police the suspect had been sending them letters threatening their dogs for a year. >> we have had cases like this. but not to this degree to where letters have been sent. >> police served a search warrant wednesday on this house and found enough evidence to arrest 72-year-old earl aneley who is suspected in the poisebing death of another neighbor's dog eight years ago. they're now keeping a close eye on the animals. katie now watches what her dog eats. >> we just try to make sure that the dogs are not eating anything. >> matt who lives behind ansley showed us where he believes the suspect got access to the dog's yard.

>> came over the fence. >> they're especially mourning d.j. who was named after the family 18-year-old daughter who died in a car accident in 2009. intentionally killing someone's spet a felony according to contra costa county animal control and carries a penalty of up to five years. so far, ansley has not been charged in the case. tomas roman, abc7 news. oakland police are investigating murder of a teenager after 11:30 last night. 911 call sent police to seminary and bancroft avenues. where they found a 17-year-old boy shot to death inside a parked minivan. investigators are hoping that witnesses will come forward with tips on what happened. so far, the name of the victim has not been released. there is tough talk from the chief of the east palo alto police department about gangs. yesterday, chief ronald davis outlined a plan on the letter to the community how they will dismantle the gangs. it follows shooting death of 3-month-old isaac jimenez garcia on june 5. police arrested a

17-year-old gang member in that case. they claim he mistake the baby family for rival gang members. several agencies will target gangs of east palo alto. >> we're at a point in the community we have been able to make dramatic changes. very positive changes and the community is not going backwards. we are not going to have a gang war in the middle of the streets, not going to have 3-month-old baby shot and killed. >> this month, davis says police will try to negotiate a truce between the gangs. a 17-year-old swimmer who disappeared before a swim meet yesterday morning has been found safe. carissa metcalfe has been reported missing by her mother after she didn't report to her coach in the first race for grand prix that is the time qualifier before next month world championship and features olympic swimmers like michael phelps. she was found at park near santa clara at 7:00 last night. police say she was slightly disoriented but okay. she did not give police an

explanation for the disappearance. the family of missing nursing student michele le issing can for volunteers -- michele le is asking for volunteers to help ceremony for her today. sky7-hd was overhead yesterday as dozens of volunteers fanned out to search an area previously searched by police. they're checking areas based on her cell phone signal after disappeared on may 27. they're being asked to check in at 25350 cypress avenue. the search will go on same hours tomorrow. convicted sexual predator carey verse will be released from state mental hospital in the next few days and no longer be under supervision. a judge decided that verse should go three after two state appointed psychologists determined he was no longer violent. verse spent most of his adult life in custody. he's now 40. has be chemically cast rated. verse was released from

custody in 2004 and lived in bay point until being sent to the hospital on a parole violation. he has a history of sexually assaulting men. coming up next, bay area homeowners in desperate need of help with the house payments. thousands of families seek rescue from foreclosure this weekend. also, in a town called phil campbell, a small army of people named phil campbell will lend a hand to save a namesake.

in san jose, david louie, abc7 news. this morning, microsoft is warning about a new scam that targets p.c. users and could bilk them from hundreds of dollars. it starts with a phone call from someone claiming to be a computer security expert. the victim is warned he's victim of security threat and told to download software code that they use to access the credit card information. if you are sending mail to canada do it before post offices closed today. canadian post office workers locked out of their jobs on tuesday after nationwide led to walk-out. u.s. postal service says after today it won't accept mail bound for canada until the situation is resolved. arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords is back in her hometown for the first time since she nearly lost her life five months ago. the staff said she had a brief private visit with her family in tuson, where she was wounded in january in a shooting rampage that killed

several days where we will see the numbers not only around average tomorrow, but above average toward the middle of the week. hot inland at s.f.o. sunshine. low clouds and fog extensive, toward salinas and north and sonoma county. spreading inland. as a result the temperatures are uniform. low to mid-50s. upper 40s in san rafael, santa rosa, los gatos. overall with the low clouds and fog. we are looking at the calm winds. the changes come later today with the temperatures warming up. we will look for a trough to exit. that is going to allow for the warming trend to begin tomorrow. by today, we're still looking at this afternoon, some sunshine after the low clouds part. a couple of patches of fog left at the coast. i do think we will see sunshine even down around the san mateo coast. and then tomorrow, coming up as much as five degrees. today, still a little cool.

that sea breeze intact. will afford temperatures to stay in mid-to-upper 50s from pacifica, to half moon bay. but elsewhere, we'll see the clouds clear from bodega bay and stinson beach with the widespread 60s around the bay. 70s returning from sonoma to santa clara. upper 70s heading out toward the inland east bay. and low 80s. we had a system that enhanced the marine layer and allowed for strong sea breeze. once again today, if you spend time at the coast or the city. the temperatures will be held down and we'll see some sunshine. then by the evening hours the fog is back. tomorrow, with high pressure building on it. the trend is for less of a sea breeze, more of a northerly flow. that's going to cut off the cool ocean breeze. we will see the numbers warm up a bit. 90 in fresno. warm in the san joaquin valley. 80 in the southern sierra with 69 in big sur. 90 in chico.

boarding pass. marman says he refused to deplane, saying he was a paying passenger. >> i said i'm just like everybody else on this plane. i'm human. the pilot said no, you're not. you're not like everybody else. >> what do you think he meant when he said that? >> i don't know what he meant. you know, only the man who said it knows what he meant. >> the captain made a citizens arrest and told police marman was trespassing on his plane. >> i don't see how they book me on trespassing when i'm a paying customer. >> marman was arrested and taken to the redwood city jail. his mother bailed him out. marman told me he felt like he was attacked and harassed without reason. >> i feel like if it was a rapper or a superstar, walking on the airplane, hanging, sagging his pants, they would want his autograph. they wouldn't tell him, hey can you pull up your plants, please? >> marman said he never had problems with u.s. airways before. >> would you ever fly them again? >> i doubt it.

and publicize the next americas cup race in 2013. in mark matthews' report you can do more than just get a good look. >> reporter: in the rain, history sailed in san francisco bay. tied up alongside the golden gate yacht club, the yacht "america." not an 1850 original but reproduction of a yacht to win the america cup. >> it's true to its original size. it's an exact one-to-one replyca. of how the boat would have sailed in 1851. >> the owner troy sears showed me around. >> all wood. the boat is entirely a wooden boat. just like it was in 1851. the original "america" was scrapped after damaged in the 1940s. sears bought this remake six year ago and brought it to the site of the next america cup, figuring people would be willing to pay to go for a sail. >> there is something special about getting on a boat and sailing on the

bridge and having a historical tie watching the mod earn technology and being on what was state-of-the-art 150 years ago that started the whole america cup. >> 150 years ago, the original america was state-of-the-art. though now it seems incredibly opulent for a race boat. >> today, a modern racing boat would try to remove every ounce it could to maximize the performance. >> in 19th century, the race boat came with salons, gally of producing a banquet and panty to hold month room of meals. state rooms with private bath or showers. >> we have six showers on the boat. >> not the mod earn race boat -- mod earn race boat. in the day, it was no less a techno l technological marvel. it was opposite from the norm. the royal british yacht squadron was blunt-nosed boats. >> they felt that the boat was backwards.

we are coming up about 10 to 7:00 on saturday morning and looking out to the roof cam near the ferry building. as you can see, coit tower. i think everybody, locals and visitors alike would say what a cool shot. especially with the fog in the background, the clouds giving it that distinct look. the clouds are leaving and the sun is coming. lisa argen is going to tell us exactly where it's coming to and how long it will be here in a couple of minutes. gift cards can be a good deal as long as businesses accept them. what do you do if a store says no? here is "7 on your side's" michael finney with that story. >> reporter: carol woodland

received this blockbuster gift card this past christmas from her next door neighbor. a nice gift, but one that didn't pay off when she tried to cash in. >> the map said, "we don't -- the man said, "we don't take them anymore." he had a little sign on the corner and he turned it around so i could read that. apparently, they had been bought out by dish. they were not accepting the gift cards anymore. >> this is the story she -- store she went to and the gift card notice now is front and center. the company making clear the gift card isn't worth the plastic it's printed on. >> the worst part of this for consumer ises the announcement came two weeks before the discards would be dishonored so consumers had very little time to cash out the gift cards. frankly, the announcement wasn't as publicized as it should have been. >> joe says blockbuster went out of business, the cards ruled no good. this dish network bought out what remained of the

company. >> well, there was no way for anybody to know that. as far as i know, it was a big secret. >> my understanding is that they got approval from this from the bankruptcy court. the gift cards don't have to be allowed. the new owners could choose whether or not to accept them, but at this point they have not indicated that they are going to accept the old blockbuster gift cards. >> but they have hinted. here is what the company told "7 on your side" when we asked. >> the new blockbuster is looking at ways to resurrect a form of the gift card. consumers with gift cards may wish to hold on to them for now. >> yeah. they can't make up their mind. i'm glad i didn't throw it away. >> so no promises and dish did not buy that debt. but still, hang on to the cards and if there is a change i'll make sure you know about it. i'm michael finney. there is a housing boom in marin county to benefit a place that offers services to homeless people. they're not ordinary homes. they're designed by artists. tonight they will be auctioned off at a fundraiser. abc7's arts and entertainment reporter don sanchez shows us their work. >> reporter: a house reminiscent of the fall kirk mansion in san rafael. artist's vision of what every home should include. view out the window to a bucolic west mar rin. the art houses of marin are meant to channel passion of the artists to help the vulnerable neighbors and raises money for ritter center program that assist homeless and increasing number of low-income families. >> our hope is to be really around change care, around giving people a new lease on life. that involves providing wrap-around services, healthcare, mental health support. support for addiction recovery. >> they also offer food and clothing. these art homes are a way to meet their goal to get people in housing. it doesn't seem possible anytime soon.

1200 people are homeless in marin. >> 120 a month coming to ritter center new. we served over 4,000 people just last year. depen, the clinic -- again, clinic services are desperately needed. >> that's be the artists come in. given 7-by-4 aluminum house to unleash creativity. each tells a story related to homelessness. this is called our house is your house. this work has fire on one side, water on the other. about a he issor ration of -- restoration of life interpreting ritter center's mission. there are six houses this year down from the 25 wooden one last year. you can see them at the community center where they are set up for the benefit. they believe everyone should have a place to live. these art houses of marin will be auctioned off saturday night to support the ritter center program to help the homeless. of course, the long-term goal is eliminate homelessness in marin county. in mill valley, don sanchez, abc7 news. we have a surprising ranking for the city by the bay. travel and leisure magazine

listed san francisco as the 12th dirtiest city in the country. in its annual survey of american cities. the magazine asked visitors to gauge a city dirtiness on litter, air pollution, and taste of local tap water. san francisco ranked worst than dallas, boston and washington, d.c. the dirtiest city in the country according to the survey is new orleans. well, however clean or dirty we are, what is the weather today? >> nice. brightening up out there already. outside we are looking at sunshine. we'll see a strong sea breeze at the coast. the temperatures there in the 50s. elsewhere, we will be looking at numbers to warm up. just a little bit. so we're talking upper 70s to low 80s inland valley. that's concord and livermore. 75 in san jose. still on average, below normal. after today, we're going to go in the other direction. temperatures around normal. 5 degree warm-up tomorrow for father's day. monday, tuesday, wednesday, return to le to mid-90s inland. tuesday begin sums.
