we begin with breaking news on this thursday morning. >> captured, notorious gangster whitey bulger, one of the top ten most wanted, finally found after years on the run. choice words from an airline pilot in the cockpit about women and gays when he thought no one was listening. and a tornado touches down at the home of the kentucky derby. good morning. the boston mob boss who outsmarted and embarrassed federal agents for the last 16 years is a fugitive no more. >> the fbi wasted no time updating its website overnight changing whitey bulger's status to captured after they arrested him and his girlfriend in california. john hendren has the details. >> reporter: he had been on the

lam, wanted for more than a decade. >> he is a predator in every sense of the word and took advantage of the very community that he was from. >> reporter: alleged mobster james "whitey" bulger fled boston in late 1994 as federal agents were about to arrest him in connection with 19 killings that span ned the 1970s to 1980s. >> do you know when i am? >> reporter: he was so notorious, he was the inspiration for "the departed" starring leonardo dicaprio and jack nicholson. >> bottom line is bulger has to be caught and the sooner the better. this has gone on long enough. >> reporter: they recently stepped up their efforts to find his girlfriend, catherine greig. >> we focused on manicurists, beauty salons, veterinarian clinics. anybody that may have had contact with her. >> reporter: greig and bulger disappeared in 1995 with a $2

million reward for information leading to his capture. the 60-year-r-d greig faces charges of harboring a fugitive. >> we look to publicize the bulger case worldwide in order to, in essence, make his world smaller for him. >> reporter: the two were arrested without incident and will appear in a southern california courtroom. greig was known for her multiple surgeries and for her hygiene and made monthly visits to a dentist for cleaning. rob and peggy? i'm sorry. daniel and peggy. >> that's okay. very interesting. >> you know, this was no casual search, was it? >> reporter: no, it wasn't, in fact, peggy, the police, the fbi tracked them to uruguay at one point. they were staking out the battle of normandy, the 60th anniversary there because he was apparently a military fan and at one point they thought they had tracked him down in sicily, and after interpol tried to close in, they discovered, in fact, what they had run across was two german tourists. peggy? >> john hendren live in

washington, thank you so much. the team at "good morning america" is also working this story. we'll have the latest coming up at 7:00. and a new york man accused in a deadly drugstore massacre is set to appear in court this morning. police arrested david laffer at a suburban home and charged him with shooting four people to death at close range in that sunday shooting then stuffing his backpack full of painkillers. they did identify laffer from surveillance video. an arizona jury convicted self-help guru james ray of negligent homicide for leading a sweat lodge ritual that ended with three people dead. ray insists that the deaths were a tragic accident, but prosecutors say he should have stopped the two-hour sauna-style spiritual cleansing after participants starting passing out and vomiting. president obama has started what he says will be a steady pace of troop withdraraws from afghanistan. 10,000 service members will come home by year's end, but there are still major challenges i winding down the long war. here's martha raddatz. >> reporter: the president said u.s. troops have made significant progress in the fight against al qaeda.

>> al qaeda remains dangerous, and we must be vigilant against attacks, but we have put al qaeda on a path to defeat, and we will not relent until the job is done. >> reporter: what's clear from his comments is that the focus in the future will be on counterterrorism, not a broader approach. >> of course, huge challenges remain. this is the beginning, but not the end, of our effort to wind down this war. >> reporter: and once the initial drawdown is over, it will continue. what has been the cost? in just 2011 the u.s. will spend more than $118 billion, and just since the surge began, more than 670 americans have been killed. 20-year-old matthew henegan, 11 years old when the war began, was one of them. i want to know what you said to the picture. when you went up there. >> i told him i'm going to miss him and going out will never be the same. >> reporter: is this the first person you've lost? >> yes.

>> reporter: what is the price paid on the home front? this is alex voleski and inin 2005 he was 6 when his father first went off to iraq as a young lieutenant colonel. he deployed to iraq three times. he is now in afghanistan, a brigadier general, and this is alex, now 13, who will have spent 4 1/2 years without his father. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. today the senate intelligence committee begins confirmation hearings for general david petraeus as the next head of the cia. petraeus is retiring from the army after heading up the war in afghanistan. people living along a swollen river in north dakota are now bracing for historic flooding, the worst since the 1800s. the river has already climbed over levees designed to protect the city of minot. more than 10,000 people had to scramble to leave town after evacuation orders were pushed up by five hours yesterday. thousands of homes and businesses are now expected to be flooded in the next week.

the home of the kentucky derby is littered with debris after a tornado touched down near the famed track. about five barns at churchill downs were badly damaged. in fact, the horses were running loose. no races were going on when it hit and no horses or people were hurt. >> those fancy hats wouldn't stand a chance. >> they wouldn't and those are expensive horses. now for this morning's weather from around the nation, more severe weather is in store for louisville as gusty winds and hail sweep in from boston to nashville. also a chance of tornadoes from oklahoma city to wichita and violent storms in montana and wyoming. texas gets some much-needed rain. showers and thunderstorms from along the gulf coast. and we're looking at 90s in dallas, new orleans and miami. about 80 degrees here in new york and 88 in atlanta. fargo only gets up to 60. 71 in minneapolis and about 81 in detroit. phoenix, a scorching 110. sacramento, 96 degrees. coming up, the ultimate bernie madoff memento goes on the auction block at almost half the price.

for this year to under 3% growth and expects the economy to stay slow until next year, and despite that, the fed is not planning any policy changes. bernanke also says that interest rates will be kept low. a new sign of trouble at the post office, which will stop putting money into its employees' pension fund so it can hang on to cash that it needs in order to keep operating. the agency was $8 billion in the red last year because of the slow economy and also mail business going online. and those signs of a troubled u.s. economy are weighing on overseas markets. tokyo's nikkei average was down slightly today. late trading.ang seng is down in in london, the ftse opened lower. on wall street the dow lost 80 points yesterday. the nasdaq index fell 18 points. well, the twins featured in "the social network" movie are ending their legal battle with facebook. the winklevoss twins claimed that facebook found er mark zuckerberg stole their idea. the twins and a third man are accepting a $65 million settlement negotiated in 2008. well, new government

grannies and grandes -- >> reporter: he goes on to detail how it's increasingly difficult to find co-workers he wants to sleep with. >> now i'm back in houston, which is easily ononof the ugliest bases. i mean it's all ththe [ bleep ] old dudes and grannies and maybe a handful of cute chicks. >> reporter: the passengers couldn't hear, but air traffic controllers and other pilots certainly could. >> okay, whoever is transmitting better watch what you're saying. okay, someone's got a stuck mike and telling us all about their endeavors. we don't need to hear that. >> 360, skywest 6285, and they wonder why airline pilots have a bad reputation. >> reporter: southwest has not identified the pilot. he was suspended but not fired. why not? the airline refused to grant us an interview. instead, they released this video statement. >> on behalf of the pilot, i want to apologize to our employees, to our customers and to fellow pilots in the industry. >> reporter: southwest sent him
