investigators in nevada fear casualties may rise in the train wreck. there are two people confirmed dead and they are looking for more remains on the trains. dead include a truck driver and the amtrak conductor. yesterday's crash injured dozens of others 70 miles east of reno. they plan to search the cars today for any additional victims. that train carried about 250 passengers. some of them arrives on buses about 11:30 last night. they included a family of six from san jose. >> tipped the car over and then i could see the flames out the window and a lot of screaming. >> people just kept -- they kept walking to the go ahead getting out as fast as they could. >> leslie brinkley tells us

more. >> flames engulfed several passenger cars on this amtrak train after a big rig truck had a crash around 11:30 in the morning 60 miles east of reno. the smoke from the burning cars soared into the sky. 204 passengers and 14 crew members were on board members en route from chicago to emeryville. the crash happened without warning. >> you heard a boom and a jolt and then a big ball of flames went past the window. everybody started yelling. then it was over just that fast. stuck our heads out and saw the side of the car tore open and it looked like part of the truck ticking out of it. the cab doesn't exist anymore. they appear to be empty. my wife and i were in the lower sleeper cabin on the same side

where it was hit. if it happened half a second later, we wouldn't be here. >> the truck driver and the amtrak conductor died at the scene. others were taken to trauma centers. others were later transferred to buses. >> this man had tickets to board the ill-fated train in reno. we were thinking if we got on earlier it would have been us. we were delayed in reno because of it. we heard about it and wait about five hours to catch a bus to sacramento. we hopped on a train down here. our hearts go out to all the families, definitely. amtrak has set up a hot line for anybody who needs information about the passengers. number is 1-800-523-9101.

they released a statement, we are saddened by any injuries and appreciate the emergency response by local and state agencies. fire rescued a woman from a submerged car after she drove into a lagoon. this happened just before 3:00 at east hilldale boulevard and south norfolk street. there were two other people in the car. rescue boats and divers from several agencies searched the water. water is about six to eight feet deep. paramedics took the woman to stanford where she is being treated for minor injuries. >> same-sex couples will be able to legally marry in new york state after the republican led senate voted to approve gay marriage, means weddings can take place in 30 days. ♪ >> the celebration erupted at the stone wall inn in greenwich

village. democratic governor andrew cuomo signed the bill into law after lobbying it for it heavily. >> new york made a powerful statement, for the people all across this nation. we reached a new level of social justice this evening. >> supporters call it a historic step. new york now becomes the sixth and by far the most populous state to legalize same-sex marriage. the catholic bishop condemned the law and said they were deeply disappointed and troubled. we'll have more on the law and impact coming up at 8:30. here in san francisco, gay pride weekend kicked off with the 8th annual trans march. >> this year transgender march celebrated the landmark compton cafeteria riot.

that erupted in 1966 when the transgender community decided to resist harassment by the police department. we have a list of events on our website at abc7news.com. a bright and talented honor student just received a one year stay from being deported. young woman from los altos plans to spend that time fighting to to stay in the u.s. while she continues our studies. she is now speaking out for the first time. lisa amin gulezian has more. >> people like me, i absolutely belong here. >> reporter: this is the first time she has spoken on camera about being in the u.s. illegally about her near deportation and about her uncertain future. she and her mother left india and came here illegally in 1997 seeking asylum.

they were suddenly on ice's radar last fall when agents required the 20-year-old to wear this ankle monitoring device. then last week the deportation order came down and then they granted a one-year stay of deportation. >> she came here not of her own choice and she was growing up in united states and showed herself to be a committed member of the community. >> she is in the pre-med program and most likely to save the world by her high school class. >> i feel very badly for her. i'm sure that she is in this country once legally, she is going to be a great asset to our county. >> reporter: she is in the summer ongoing emigration debate. she is fleigd to on washington, d.c. to join -- flying to washington, d.c. to speak out in favor of the dream act.

infel is taking part in the president's latest job creation program along with stanford and berkeley. president obama launched his initiative at carnegie mellon university in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. it will bring together private companies and top universities to spur high-tech manufacturing to keep america competitive in the global marketplace. the initiative comes as the number of people applying for unemployment benefits increased by the most ever last month. the family of a medal of honor recipient whom the president incorrectly said was still alive accepted his apologies. he said a comrade of theirs was the first mauled of honor recipient during his president who is not receiving it posthumously. he was actually killed in action in afghanistan in 2006. the president presented his

it was 70 miles east of reno. nevada highway patrol tells abc7 they have secured the site and about to board the train to look for more victims. there are reports that as many as five people have died but nevada state investigators say they are in recovery mode and no reports so far of anybody missing. 20 passengers ended up in hospitals. the train carried 204 passengers and 14 crew members. some of them arrived by bus at amtrak's emeryville station late last night. >> it was a few seconds, the train rocked and there was a fire shot through the sides of windows. we just ran to the back of the train and got off the back. >> witnesses told the nevada highway patrol it appeared the driver made no effort to stop and that the crossing warning lights and gates were working properly. >> a woman ended up airlifted to

a burn center after a fire broke out in hercules this morning. it started after 1:00 a.m. inside this of this home on falcon way. 20 firefighters went to the scene. it took them half an hour to put out the flames. the victim suffered severe burns. she is being treated in san jose. the cause of that fire is under investigation. california struggles with the legality of same-sex marriage, new york just legalized it. andrew cuomo signed night law that was followed by celebrations but gay weigheds can't begin in 30 days. rest of nation remain sharply divided. >> there was an explosion of cheers across new york. and especially here. new york city stone wall inn, considered the birthplace of the

moved into their neighborhood after spending time for violating parole and medical treatment. he has just been released from calling the state hospital after a prognosis he is no longer a violent sexual predator. after bee spurned in other bay area cities, he ended up behind his counselor's offices. when neighbors found out he was furious. he was one of protestors. he is baffled he is back. i know he has a right to live where he wants but if it makes the neighborhood uncomfortable. >> he will no longer have to wear an ankle breaks let. he will be free to go where he wants. >> we have concerns he could re on offend. we don't know. we are trying to increase awareness and notify the community that a high risk offender is living in the area. >> as a sex offender he will

the homeowner and two criminals engaged in a gun battle that resulted in serious injuries. it is the fear that many californians have to budget cuts to public safety. more crime. the corrections department has been cutting the gps tracking devices off half of the 950 gang members on parole as a way to save $6 million by july 1st. after slashing jobs and other expenses, the agency says there is nowhere else to cut. >> we can cut on the side of gang monitors but we can't cut on the sex offender monitors because those are mandated by law. so we're doing what we can within the confines of the rules and laws and the budget we have left. >> reporter: one of the suspects in the shooting man who investigators believe had his

pharmacies. google filed a suit against those advertisers, saying they are bad for users but legitimate pharmacies and the entire e-line industry. consumer watchdog sent a letter to the white house counsel expressing concern that the president has been entertaining google executives at the white house while the cases are pending. that poses an inappropriate conflict of interest. >> so the white house shouldn't be embracing a company and chief executive officers when that company is under criminal investigation by the justice department, antitrust investigation by the federal trade commission. >> reporter: president obama does have a close relationship with google's executive chairman eric schmidt. when high came to the bay area he invited schmidt to dinner with other tech ceos and he was at a recent steak dinner for germany's chancellor.
