john hendren has the details. >> reporter: nearly two dozen states are coping with rising flood waters. near minot, north dakota, high water have driven 11,000 people from their homes. >> it's so easy to close your doors and say i'm going to go home tonight. i thought about that last night. well, we'll go home tonight. i don't have a home anymore. >> reporter: peaked two feet lower than expected. but it's nearly 13 feet above flood stage and it's going to stay near that level for days. >> when you actually see your house and you know it's -- it's not just your basement, it's your whole house, i'm sorry. >> reporter: the river hit its peak on sunday, flooding more than 4,000 homes. >> basically, i got back from a year deployment from afghanistan. and coming back to this, this is honestly, to me, t ts is worse than being over there. >> reporter: why is that? >> you have no control.

>> reporter: in nebraska, a nuclear power plant is flooded surrounded by flood water from the missouri river. of the thousands in the flooded region, fema says few homes have flood insurances. stores here are rationing bottled water. but hope is not in short supply >> failure is not an option. remember? we go on. we stay strong. we stay -- we stay aligned and we go on. >> reporter: john hendren, abc news. a fast-moving wildfire has broken out into new mexico. forced officials at the national laboratory to close for business today. up to 100 nearby homes have been ordered evacuated. the news is much more encouraging for massive fires in arizona. one fire is fully contained and the third is growing only in an area with few residents. federal investigators are

swarming the scene of a friday explosive crash between a truck and a train in a nevada desert. it turns out that the trucking company has a spotty safety record. cited repeatedly for safety violations. investors have pinpointed the cause of the crash. >> we will not determining the probable cause of the accident while we're here on scene, nor will we speculate about what may have caused the accident. we expect to be on the scene between seven and ten days. >> my heart felt like it was up in my throat. you know, because we didn't know if it was the end or what. >> i went to grab my purse. and she just said, out, go. and i have nothing. >> investigators say they don't get any help from the train's so-called black box. because it was too badly damaged in the crash. at least 23 people including several children were injured when a school bus flipped over on a southern pennsylvania highway. the bus collided with a car that was passing on the left. then suddenly veered to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

amazingly, none of the injuries turned out to be life threatening. president obama's re-entering the debate over reducing the nation's debt. the president is trying to push talks forward before the nation's borrowing exceeds its over $14 trillion limit in early august. congresswoman michele bachmann is in waterloo, iowa, this morning, the place where he was born. a tea party favorite, bachmann has gone back to her roots to announce that she's running for the president. numbers.enenuraging poll jonathan karl reports from waterloo. >> reporter: in the political world, she's the woman of the moment. at top of the polls in iowa. >> president obama is a one-term president. >> reporter: coming off a presidential debate earlier this month where she outshined the more experienced candidates, bachmann has just been dubbed "queen of the team party" by the conservative "weekly standard" magazine.

suddenly, the congresswoman from minnesota once seen as something of a fringngcandidate has emerged as the person to beat, especially in the critical first caucus state of iowa -- the place where she was born. how big a deal is that poll? "the des moines register" has you tied for first place. >> it is a very nice welcome home gift, let me tell you. we are excited. we had heard wonderful things on the ground, and this confirmed what we were hearing. >> reporter: another clear sign bachmann has broken through -- >> believe it or not, my makeup was done by a child. and live from new york, it's saturday night! >> reporter: she's already been parodied on "saturday night live." bachmann's appeal is partly because of her unyieldingly conservative views. she started the tea party caucus in the house. there's also her personal story. she's ththmother of five and has provided care for 23 foster children. she is controversial, known for some over-the-top criticism of the president. >> i am very concerned that he

may have anti-american views. >> reporter: but her more controversial statements led to this question from chris wallace on "fox news sunday." >> are you a flake? >> well, i think that would be insulting, to say something like that. because i'm a serious person. >> reporter: wallace later apologized for that, but it's only a bump in the road, as michele bachmann prepares to kick off her campaign. >> reporter: on tuesday, sarah palin will be visising iowa, now w me see palin and bachmann as potential rivals. when i asked a bachmann supporter about palin, his response was, who? one of the most recognizable jackets in the world is in new hands. the red and black leather jacket that michael jackson wore in the thriller video. the texas man who brought the jacket plans to use it to raise

asian markets are mostly down today, this time amid worries about the state of banks in italy. tokyo's nikkei average lost 100 points today. in london, the ftse opened higher. on wall street, the dow lost 69 points last week and the nasdaq index gained 36 points. microsoft office 365 launches tomorrow. providing a virtual environment for various devices to store and share software.
