wo making news in america this morning. atomic danger, battling a monster brush fire as it closes in on a key nuclear lab. deadly siege. terrorists storm a hotel brazenly killing civilians taking nato hours to get the situation under control. and bracing for the season's first majojostorm of the hurricane season set to make landfall today. good morning. fire crews in new mexico have been working frantically all night trying to contain the flames that are burning out of control in los alamos. now, already the town's entire population has been evacuated. >> but this morning the fire is moving dangerously close to the los alamos nuclear lab potentially threatening the

radioactive waste stored there. john hendren has details. >> reporter: it's a high stakes science experiment at the birthplace of the atomic bomb. an out of control fire at the doorstep now threatens a dump site with 20,000 barrels of waste contaminated with plutonium. >> what we'reried worried about is what happens when fires go right into these buildings and perhaps pop open many of the 55-gallon drums. >> reporter: lab authorities say they're taking every precaution. >> we've removed fuels from near the buildings. we've done the analysis to understand what would happen to our buildings if a fire occurred. and we've made plans to deal with that. >> reporter: the blaze has torched 30 buildings in the new mexico countryside and evacuated los alamos, a town of 11,000. >> it upsets you. i mean, no use getting upset because there's nothing you can do about it but i was debating on whether to stay there or not. >> reporter: some have insisted on staying behind but even for the evacuated, the

danger isn't over. now the fear is plutonium tainted dust. >> plutonium is one of the most toxic chemicals known to man. a particle, a microgram lodged in your lungs can cause lung cancer. >> reporter: and of course there's the rere of the nuclear lab. >> what happens if it spreads to the heart of the laboratory and at that point we have to cross over fingers hoping that secure sites remain secure. >> reporter: a big concern for a fire that is nowhere near contained. lab authorities say that waste is stored on cement away from grass and trees and those drums are designed to withstand wildfires but if that fire gets much closer, we could see a white-knuckle test as to whether they hold up. john hendren, abc news. and the other big story. a terrifying nighttime attack on a luxury hotel in the afghan capital. ten dead, most of them hotel workers. >> and there's talk about shifting security from u.s. to afghan forces.

nick schifrin is in kabul. >> reporter: the nighttime attack on the landmark intercontinental hotel lasted for more than 4 1/2 hours. in all six attackers approached the hotel with machine guns and suicide vests. one detonated himself at the first security checkpoint several hundred feet from the entrance. the rest of the group then shot their way through two more security checkpoints and then opened fire on hotel guests. the bombers then entered the lobby and spread throughout the hotel shooting and detonating g their explosives. two nato helicopters fired rockets that killed three gunmen on the roof. that ended the standoff. several people have been killed. police arriving on the scene had engaged in a gun battle with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades. they blocked off the streets leading to the five-story hotel, and they cut power to the building and the neighborhood. the intercontinental is perched on a hill and overlooks kabul. it is popular among westerners

and afghan political leaders. during the attack, senior afghan officials were at the hotel. they were there ahead of a conference on the transition of power from the u.s. to afghan police and army due to take place in just a few weeks. the taliban n omised to disrupt that transition, and they claim credit for the attack, which is one of the worst in afghanistan in years. nick schifrin, abc news, kabul. and the kabul attack is having an immediate effect here at home. the nypd is now stepping up security at hotels in the big apple in the wake of the attack. a spokesman says there's been no specific threat but the measures are being taken as a precaution. the president is expected to address the afghan situation during a news conference this morning. you can see that here live at abc at 11:30 eastern time. lawmakers in greece are voting today on the first of two drastic cost-cutting measures aimed at prevent inging total economic collapse.

as crucial for job growth. california governor jerry browowis expected to sign an $86 billion austerity budget approved by lawmakers last night. now, the package closes a $9.6 billion deficit, but it's likely to be challenged in court. both parties are unhappy with aspects of the budget. republicans don't like the new fees. democrats oppose deep spending cuts. an air force f-16 fighting falcon like this one has crashed during a training mission about miles from las vegas. now, there is no word on the pilot's condition. the $18 million plane was the type that's used by the air force's aerial demonstration team the thunderbirds. it can hit speed ss of 1,500 miles an hour. the first named storm of the atlantic hurricane season is making a beeline for the eastern coast of mexico. tropical storm arlene is expected to pack 60-mile-an-hour winds when it makes landfall this evening and could

several reports around the world show that the global economic slowdown may be less severe than was previously thought and that is giving markets a boost at home and overseas. tokyo's nikkei average gained 148 points today. hong kong's hang seng is up in late trading. in london the ftse opened higher. on waltz the dow gained 145 points and the nasdaq index picked up 41. one reason that stocks were up was a new report on the housing market. a new survey from standard & poor's found that
