in oakland there's one young man who learned the hard way just how dangerous they can be. abc7 shares his story. >> good boy. >> 21-year-old josh myers of oakland loves playing catch with his dog. luckily he's right-handed because he lost his other hand to an explosion. >> it took off the hand, pretty much it was gone like just blew it off at the wrist. >> last year josh had illegal fireworks in his pocket equivalent to half a stick of dynamite. a spark ignited the explosive and it blew off his hand, a piece ever his thigh and cavett. he said he learned a valuable lesson. >> when playing with the explosives and doing stuff like that, leave it to the professionals. >> josh also lost his dream of being a marine. but he's upbeat now and uses his experience to educate. >> i definitely do use it as an example quite a bit. you know, just especially with younger kids. >> i don't know where they get them, but they get them. it's going to look like a war zone in oakland. >> oakland battalion fire chief has seen young people malled and

disfigured by illegal fireworks. 12,000 people are injured by fireworks yearly, half of them children. in oakland there's a zero tolerance for setting off any type of fireworks. usher said people who use them will be fined or arrested because of the grief they can cause. >> you get people killed, you get peoples he' homes damaged, destroyed, you affect people's lives. >> this is one area that allows the sale of save fireworks. people come from all over the area to purchase them. >> we need to remind them they set off the fireworks in cities where they are legal. >> and where they can be handled safely, as well, especially for the children. >> we take control of everything. they around allows to go into it, they aren't allows actually to even light it. >> there are fines up to $5,000 for using illegal fireworks and the sale of those fireworks can land you in jail. in the newsroom, abc7 news. >> caroline: this holiday

weekend we are experiencing warm weather with more on the way. hundreds enjoyed the heat at the alameda county fair. temperatures were just right for many to enjoy all the attractions. i think this is the alameda county fail. this is fillmore street. the fillmore jazz festival. it's the largest free festival on the west coast. thousands packed fillmore street listening to music, eating food. the final day of the festival is today. the high temperatures are affecting our air quality. there's a spare-the-air alert today meaning the air management district is expecting unhealthy conditions. if you have big 4th of july plans, get prepared for the heat. here's lisa with what you can expect. >> hi, carolyn. this is the place to be today. very little fog. a weak sea breeze and warming up today for everyone. high temperatures in santa rosa today, upper 90s.

94 in napa, 80 in san francisco. a far cry from where the records will be. so we won't shatter any records today but anywhere from five to seven degrees warmer than yesterday. that's why we have a spare the air quality today for poor air quality here in the east bay and also the santa clara valley. we are already in the 60s and 70s. a warmer start to the day. as much as 2 to 6 degrees warmer out there. we aren't talking about the marine error the sea breeze today. just a very weak one at our coast. even 70s there. we will talk about a minor cool down for the 4th for some areas. and how long the heat will last coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, lisa. other news this morning, san jose police are investigating a shooting on the 1300 block of eden avenue. police say the victim described as a white or hispanic male was taken to a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. police arrived on the scene after they got a call about that

incident late last night. an investigation is underway, but there's little information being released right now. two men are in the hospital this morning after a shooting in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. it happened last night around 8:00 at alice and jones street. one man was shot several times in the upper body, while a 78-year-old man, believed to be a bystander, was hit in the foot. the first victim was taken to the san francisco general hospital with life-threatening injuries. the elderly man is expected to be all right. police arrested a suspect at the scene and say they found the weapon used in that shooting. >> bay area activists onboard a boat trying to deliver humanitarian aid to palestinians said they will continue their journey, this despite the arrest of their captain. the boat was intercepted by greek authorities as the captain tried to sail from athens. they were trying to make it to gaza. they are asking the united

states to get involved. abc7 has more. >> the audacity of hope has set sail. >> it's a u.s. led boat on a protest mission from greece to gaza but the celebration was short-lived." >> no, that's not right. we have been surveyed to be safe. >> greek coast guards and commandos stopped the boat, claiming it didn't have permission to sail, and that the mission itself was too dangerous. the captain was arrested and commandos aimed weapons at the activists. berkeley resident henry nord was onboard. we spoke to him by phone from greece. >> it's very clear to us that the government is under pressure from the u.s. government and the israeli government. the greek government is not allowing any of the flotilla to leave port from grease. >> activists blame israel for the holdup. >> the u.s. is not involved with

the vessels in greece. they didn't have the proper documents. they should have settled things with the greek authorities and there was trouble with the greek authorities. >> oh, that's ridiculous. greece is obviously doing it because of pressure from the israeli government. >> jean is henry's wife. she's sure her husband is safe. she also knows he's determined to get to gaza, especially after last year's failed attempt to reach the region. six ships were intercepted by israeli soldiers. nine activists were killed and as many as ten isreali soldiers were injured. that flotilla carried medicine and supplies. activists insist this one carried only letters of support. >> this year and last year the boats have been inspected by many neutral parties very thoroughly. the israelis claim they are doing this to prevent weapons from coming but there's been all these neutral inspection that is demonstrate what they are actually bringing. >> none of the passengers

onboard the audacity of hope were arrested. some activists did leave to return home. abc7 news. >> if you live in or around he will sirito, police are warning about a possible mountain lion in the area. officers discovered an injured deer that they determined was attacked by a mountain lion. animal control said the deer was too severely injured to be saved. police have asked the residents to call 911 or animal control if they see a mountain lion. scientists say the southern end of the an and dress fault is overdue for a large earthquake. it's published on join in the journal geoscience and it's based on studying long ago quakes and flooding. smaller quakes in the past could trigger a bigger quake along the

dominik strauss-kahn was released friday after his accuser has serious credibility problems. the charges have not been dropped and he cannot leave the country. before being accused of trying to rape a hotel maid, strauss-kahn was considered the leading candidate to be the next president of france. his friend, jack laing, said now that the rape case is unraveling, strauss-kahn will come back even stronger. >> people will have for him greater admirations than before because he has shown during this period great quality of courage, dignity. >> many people in france were skeptical of the charges against strauss-kahn. now some newspapers and

television stations are trumpeting his reversal of fortune. there's a new name on the list of republican presidential candidates this weekend. michigan congressman, thaddeus mccarter, has officially announced he will seek the republican nomination for president. he made the announcement yesterday at an independence day celebration where his band was also playing. the 45-year-old attorney is serving his fifth term in congress. his competition did a bit of campaigning in iowa. newly declared candidate michelle bachman visiting a cedar rapids farmers market where she spoke and shook hands. this is the first trip the minnesota congresswoman has made to that state, which kicks off the presidential campaign season. bachman will take her bus tour to several other cities over the next few days. well, we've got a spare-the-air day today because it's really going to be hot. >> yeah. we will see numbers over

double its size to 100 acres. >> it will allow us to really have two parts to the zoo. one will be the zoo as you know it, but the other is more of a wild animal park. >> the expansion will take place on the open space above the current zoo and the focus will be on native area and plants on the area called the california trail. >> we want to show that the grizzly bear is a california native. the wolf is a california native. the jaguar is a california native that most people don't realize. >> animals who used to call this space home but were pushed out by humans, because of the grisly bay. >> because of the proximity to the bay, marine animals that washed up, the river here, animals that washed up, it was one of the prime areas for grisly bears in the state of california. >> these new animal exhibits will only take up 20 acres of the new space. 30 additional acres will be dedicated to natural habitats for both plants and animals and teaching visitors about preservation.

>> as you look out across the san francisco bay, you can see all the development that's occur. what we want to do is to show that this is what the impact of humans have been. as you look east you get to see where there's no development at all. >> visitors will get up the hill in an all-electric gondola that will repair the chair lift and they will be able to camp out overnight among the animal exhibit. >> carolyn: would you want to do that? >> it might be kind of neat. >> carolyn: a cheap over. >> maybe. >> carolyn: a wild kingdom thing. >> maybe you can pitch the tent outside tonight because that's when the cooling begins tonight, the heat advisory through 9:00 tonight. and spare-the-air day, we talked about that. this morning we had the fog. you can't see anything there but except the hazy conditions. better air quality by the bay, but even here we are going to see numbers increase as much as 5 could 6 degrees.

so today santa rosa 97. the record is 106. napa will see 94. a far cry from their record. but san francisco up several degrees. 6 degrees from yesterday. 99 is the record. oakland up as much as 8 to 10 degrees today. livermore will hit 100 degrees and san jose 94. even though we won't be close to breaking any records, it will be very toasty out there with better air quality closer to the bay and the coast. but the sea breeze much, much weaker today. as a result we will see temperatures climb all over the bay. 49, though. comfortable root now, half moon bay. 60 oakland, 69 in antioch with 63 in san jose. 58. some of the higher elevations already near 80 degrees. starting out anywhere from 2 to 5 degrees warmer than yesterday morning. so without the fog, the warmer start, the weaker sea breeze, we are looking for a warmer day today. so therefore the heat advisory today making a little bit more

sense with that heat index feeling like it's about 135 today because the air temperature up near 100. yesterday we had a stronger sea breeze. the heat will holden definitely for the east bay, the santa clara valley, but a weak sea breeze comes back tomorrow. maybe patchy fog along the coast for the 4th. we will get to that in a moment. but today really the hot weather peaks as high pressure has built into the north of us and the winds more out of the north-northwest than the westerly component. but as it continues to slide to the east tomorrow, we will see the southerly surge. just a little bit of a southwest wind tomorrow. therefore, i think the weak trough moving into california will bring a bit of relief tomorrow. today, though, 90 in los angeles. 106 fresno, 100 sacramento. yosemite will be in the 90s today and tomorrow. and the warmer day on the 4th with clear conditions for the fireworks. back home today in the south bay, how about 94 degrees in cupertino?

>> carolyn: welcome back, everyone. the girlfriend of a san mateo restaurant manager killed three years ago will raise money for a reward fund on tuesday. she hopes that will get someone to step forward with new information about his murder. this is the crime scene in san mateo where douglas costello was murdered in 2008 in what is still an unsolved case. his girlfriend, laura johnson, is holding the fundraiser as a -- at tgi fridays on tuesday, the day costello would have turned 40. the restaurant has agreed to donate 25% of all sales that day to the reward fund. the search continues for a small plane that crash and sank in sausalito. this is video of the plane attempt to go take off near bridgeway boulevard on friday. you see it starting to takeoff and hitting a wake. it slipped nose first into the

bay. a passing boat rescued the two passengers onboard. they are okay. a private company was at the scene yesterday trying to recover the wreckage. so far divers have not found it. they say the hide degree plane -- the hydroplane did not have enough fuel to cause an environmental concern. investigators will use dna testing to identify what they believe is the sixth and final victim of that amtrak crash in the nevada desert. federal investigators are expected to wrap up work at the scene early this week. they are trying to determine why the truck driver, lawrence valley, slammed into the emeryville bound train at a crossing 70 miles east of reno. he and at least five people on the train were killed. 20 were injured in the accident back on june 24th. >> two people in santa cruz county face charges for blocking the installation of pg&e smart meters. >> ma'am, don't block the car.

>> this is youtube video of friday's arrest in the pleasure point neighborhood. the protesters are affiliated with the stop smart meters group which has concerns about the safety and the privacy of those meters. they were charged with misdemeanor obstruction and released. they will be back in court in august. pg&e said customers can delay using smart meters. they will still install them but a meter reader would have to come out to those homes until the public utility commission decides how they should be investigated. responding to the protesters complaints, pg&e says it does not hire unlicensed contractors to install smart meters. the 4th of july weekend means maximum enforcement from the california highway patrol. they are sending out all available officers to patrol freeways and set up sobriety checkpoints. the chp said dui arrests are up for the first day of the holiday

supermodel naomi campbell, and princesses caroline and stephanie looking on, too. and the prince in a white military suit, placing the ring on his bride's finger. it was long thought prince albert would forever be a bachelor prince. this week reports his bride to be wanted out at the last minute. the palace calling it an ugly rumor and tonight monaco has its new princess. the other royal couple is traveling through canada. the duke and duchess arrived in quebec this weekend to visit a children's hospital. then they stopped by a government tourism institution where you can see them doing a little bit of cooking alongside culinary students. the nine day journey through canada is the couple's first official overseas trip. they head to california in a few days.

ski resorts open for business. they are taking advantage ever the lingering snow and a high pressure system that's bringing warm air to the sierra. alpine meadows also open during the holiday weekend, along with kirk wood and sugar bowl. how strange is that? >> we are looking at very hot weather. it will be the hottest day of the week. but we aren't going to say good-bye to the weather all together with a rush of cool air. it will be a slow cooling trend. you see a bit of the breeze at mount tam. the winds are blowing offshore for the most part. what little fog we had is dissipating. the warm air working down from the upper elevations to the surface and we are starting off much warmer. today upper 90's in santa rosa. 80 strand, 87 oakland. differ more will hit 100 degrees. 80 san francisco.

san jose 94. no one will break records but we will have poor air quality for the east bay and closer to the air and the coast. the fog, we might see a little patchy fog overnight tonight. 49 half moon bay. look at the numbers out toward antioch. 69 degrees. still some upper 50s from the north bay and the city. we are looking at numbers anywhere from 2 to 5 degrees warmer this morning. starting out with warmer weather and the heat advisory from noon to 9:00 tonight and the inland valleys won't notice much of a change tomorrow. but elsewhere along the coast around the bay, i think we will see enough of a sea breeze to generate a little bit of cooling trend after the warmest day of the week today. the reason being, high pressure to the north of us is build into the pacific northwest and that's changing the airflow. so we are seeing the down slope winds, warmer conditions and warmer air in the upper

>> a warning about a craigslist add for low cost airline tickets. i'm michael finney. a bay area man used craigslist to buy airline tickets and wound up flying into what he said was a big trap. it changed his son's future. 7 on your side's michael finney has their heartbreaking story. >> dock nick esteban was thrilled to be accepted into st. john's university in new york. but he had never been there so his father planned a two day visit and searched for air fares he could afford. >> three days before we were leaving i couldn't find anything so i jumped on craigslist. >> this ad caught his high, airline tickets for low prices. he e-mailed the seller. right away he heard back. the seller said he was duane pabst. he had used his frequent flyer miles to purchase two round trip tickets on american airlines for just $130 each and would sell them to cyrus for 280 dallas a piece. >> it was a nonstop flight, it was cheaper. >> so the seller booked the reservations and he received this itinerary directly from

american airlines. tickets had to be purchased by midnight so he went to this bank of america act and e-mailed him money directly into his count. >> we were up midnight waiting for it and midnight rolled back and nothing happened. >> he call the airline and no one paid for the tickets. >> i told my son, you know what, now we have to have faith. we've got to have faith. i don't think someone would do that to me. and he did. >> cyrus told police he had been swindled and it worked like this. pabst reserved the seats, which generated this itinerary. however, there was no tickets until someone paid for them. cyrus told police pabst never did buy the tickets, he just took the money. >> really, i felt sick to my stomach. >> more than money. the incident changed their lives. dominic never got to visit st. john's and a commitment was due so he decided not to go to school there after all. >> i wouldn't want to go all the way cross-country to a school

i've never been before or never seen. >> cyrus became obsessed with bringing down the man that he said stole his money. he launched duane pabst.com, exposing his name, driver's license, accusing him of an ongoing scam. he found other websites warning about him. he e-mailed him repeatedly, pleading with him to return the money. he filed complaints with american airlines and the bank of america and he called me at 7 on your side. >> think 7 on your side can get the word out to the banks and the banks would see it's a big problem. >> we asked bank of america why pabst accounts remain open despite complaints about him. the bank told us we don't close account based on accusations from a third party. we cooperate with law enforcement. american airlines tells us we first learned of mr. pabst scam

late last year and other passengers called thinking that they had tickets, too. but american said it shut down pabst frequent flyer act in december and bank of america shut down his bank account after cyrus' complaint. >> that was crazy pain. i didn't stop everybody in the world, but i did stop him. >> san francisco police are investigating this case as a financial crime and they want you to be warned. so if you see a low-cost deal online, let it raise a red flag. make sure you have the item in hand before you pay for it. remember, making an airline reservation doesn't mean you have a ticket. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. >> up next, a clean energy vehicle of a different kind. this one runs on nothing but air.

[laughter] >> they are newly graduated seniors now. while a look around shows none of them majored in housekeeping, there is evidence of intelligent life, not only in what they read, but also in what they

practice. >> you are running on compressed air? >> yeah, all different uses. >> and beyond the obvious ones. just move from the kitchen to the basement and get a look at this contraption with gauges, gears, gadget try. >> we took a normal bike and run it on compressed air. >> as kevin showed us, those air tanks attach to a small 3-piston engine through a couple hoses. squeeze the throttle, and that's one-third of a horse power. >> the power comes from the expansion of the air from the tank. >> that's the theory, anyway. but what works in a basement doesn't always translate in the street. you want to see if it really works, right? >> having fun? >> absolutely. >> the bike began as an engineering project. it is an 8-month, $2,700, and now they think they can change the world with it. >> as long as the electricity that powers the compressor is coming from a clean source, there's zero emissions from this. >> when kevin and his classmates
