good morning i'm carolyn tyler. bay area activists a board a boat trying to deliver aide to palestinians say they will continue their journey despite the arrest of their captain. he was arrested as he tried to sail to athens. they are trying to make it to gaza and is now asking united states to try to get involved. lisa amin gulezian has more. the audacity of hope is u.s. led boat on a protest mission from greece to gaza but the celebration was short-lived. no that's not right. >> greek coastguard and commando stopped the boat claims it didn't have permission to sail and the mission was too dangerous. the captain was arrested and commandos aimed weapons at the

activists. henry noor was on board. >> it was it was very clear to us that the government is under pressure from the u.s. government and israeli government the greek government is not allowing any of our flotilla ships to leave greece. >> they blame israel for the holdup. >> not involved in the stopping of the vessels in greece. they didn't have the proper documents. they should have settled things with the greek authorities. >> that is ridiculous. greece is obviously doing it because of pressure from the israeli government. >> jean tepperman is henry's wife. she also knows he is determined to get to gaza especially after last year's failed attempt to reach the region. six ships were intercepted by israeli soldiers nine were killed and ten soldiers were

injured. that is carried medicines and supplies. they insist this one only carried letters of support. >> this year and last year the boats have been inspected by neutral parties. israelis claim they are preventing weapons from coming but there have been neutral inspections to demonstrate what they are bringing. >> none of the passengers were arrested. some of the activists did leave to return home. authorities are cracking down on illegal fireworks this 4th of july weekend. about 12,000 injuries are caused by fireworks each year in this state alone half of them to children. in oakland there is one young man who learned the hard way just how dangerous they can be. tomas ramon shares his story. >> good boy. >> 21-year-old josh myers love playing fetch with his dog luckily he is right handed

because he lost his other hand to an explosion. >> it blew it off at the wrist. >> josh had illegal fireworks last year. a spark ignited and blew off his hand and thigh and calf. >> when it comes to the fires shows and playing with explosives leave it to the professionals. >> josh also lost his dream of being a marine but he is up beat and uses his experience to educate. >> i use it as an example quite a bit. especially with younger kids. >> i don't know where they get them, but they get them. it's going to look like a war zone in oakland. >> battalion chief has seen young people mauled and disfigured by illegal fire would works. 12,000 people are injured by fireworks yearly half of them children. in oakland there is a zero total rans for setting off any type of

fires people will be fined and arrested because of the grief they can cause. >> you get people that are killed you get people's homes damaged or destroyed. >> we got sparklers. >> san bruno is one of the 12 greater cities that allow safe and sane fireworks and people come from all over the bay area to purchase them. >> we want to make sure to set off the fireworks where they are legal. >> and where they can be handled safely as well especially for the children. >> they are now allowed to light it. >> there are fines up to $5,000 for using illegal fireworks and the sale of those fireworks can land you in jail. it is hot this holiday weekend. more warm weather is on the way. hundreds enjoyed the heat at the alameda county fair yesterday. temperatures were just right for many as they took in all the attractions. it was a similar scene in san

francisco at the fillmore jazz festival. it's the largest of its kind on the west coast. thousands listened to music and the final day of the festival is today. on the downside the high temperatures are affecting our air quality. this is a spare-the-air day today. the bay area quality air management district is expecting unhealthy conditions. if you have been 4th of july plans prepare for the heat. here is lisa argen. >> warm to hot conditions around the bay. in fact we're looking at temperatures today much warmer than yesterday. no fog and temperatures are responding to a warmer start for the day. a sea breeze and half moon bay is at 57. 70 in livermore and 67 in san jose right now. carolyn talked about spare-the-air day, but the worst air quality, santa clara valley where temperatures will be

flirted go with 100 degrees. tomorrow we'll look more of the sea breeze. today they'll be relief at the coast with numbers in the 70s there. almost 20 degrees warmer in san francisco as we hit the 87. oakland will be 13 degrees warmer. 7 degrees warmer in san jose. a look at when we'll see a break from the heat coming up a little bit later. >> thank you lisa. >> other news this morning, san jose police are investigating a shooting in the 1300 block of eden avenue. police say the victim described as a white or latino man was taken to a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. police arrived on the scene after getting a call about the incident late last night. there is little information being released about the case right now. two men are in the hospital this morning after a shooting in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. it happened last night around 8:00 at ellis and jones street. one man was shot several times

in the upper body while a 78-year-old man believed to be a bystander was hit in the foot. the first victim was taken to san francisco general and has life-threatening injuries. the elderly man is don't okay. they arrested a suspect at the scene and they say they found the weapon used in the shooting. if you live in or around el sear eat oh they are warning -- cerito. they discovered and injured diver they determined was attacked by a mountain lion. animal control says the deer was too severely injured to be saved and they are asking el cerrito residents to call 911 if they see a mountain lion. >> it is unusual for a court to remain in session on a sunday but there has been nothing usual about the trial of casey anthony who is accused of murdering her

two-year-old daughter. six weeks and more than 80 witnesses later that trial is finally wrapping up and her fate could be in the hands of a jury later today. this is it after six long weeks today is the day lawyers will present their final arguments to a jury arguments that will determine casey anthony's future. jurors will probably find her responsible for the death of her daughter but the question is what do you call it? >> even if they don't believe her, the burden of proof is on the prosecution. they will argue that casey killed her daughter in cold blood. >> that casey anthony had access to all the pieces of evidence no one else benefited from the death of caylee. >> and lack of physical evidence arguing there is nothing to tie

casey to caylee's death. >> there has yet to be any evidence in this case as to how this child died. >> reporter: from day one the defense team said her death was an accident that spiraled out of control. they explained casey partying and endless lies after her daughter's disappearance with this shocking allegation. >> casey was made to lie and it led when he was eight years old and father begin to touch her inappropriately. >> but no witnesses made that claim. >> i would never do anything like that to my daughter. >> it showed that they discovered the dead caylee in the family pool dumped her body in the woods and her only crime was her silence. >> she ko should have called 911. she should have done the right thing. that is what she is guilty of.

disappearing and that will be replaced by a very weak sea breeze. live look closer to home, a bit of a haze out there. that is due to the poor air quality and very little mixing. those winds were blowing and we're looking at numbers that will be at around 100 degrees in livermore. 94 in san jose. oakland climbing through the upper 80s today and we'll be looking at temperatures far from any records but still it will be hot enough out there. if you need a little break from the heat. it will be nice day today at the coast. already in the upper 60s. that was about our high temperature yesterday. now, we are looking at numbers to continue to warm throughout the afternoon. look already 80 in fairfield and 82 in antioch and 78 in santa rosa. we're looking at numbers 11 degrees warmer at this hour than we were yesterday in san francisco. that is why our temperatures this afternoon are really going heat up out there.

definitely don't spend as much time as you did yesterday outside because today it will be much warmer out there with a heat advisory. today seems more warm spare-the-air day. inland east bay, santa clara poorest air quality. it will hold inland through tomorrow and sea breeze will kick up on the 4th. today the warm and dry winds out of north. that is the switch. yesterday we had them more out of the west all because of this area of high pressure to the north of us. it's building in and that provides the wind shift and more pressure on the atmosphere and downsloping winds bringing a warm day. well into the triple-digit it's in fresno. 106 there with 90 in los angeles. back home, in the mountains we are looking at numbers today still very hot. in fact temperatures in the mid 90s, in the southern sierra. 97 lx 93 in sunnyvale.

welcome back. the pilot of a single-engine crop duster was injured when the helicopter crash landed in a field near brentwood. it went down near highway 4 south of brentwood boulevard. the pilot was airlifted to john muir hospital. no word yet on the extent of his injuries but they are not believed to be life-threatening. authorities are investigating to determine the cause of that accident.

environmental officials or the scene as well because that helicopter was carrying pesticides to treat crops on the ground. divers have located the small plane that crashed and sank in richardson bay. this video of the plane attempting to take off. you can see the plane started to take off and then hitting a wake. it slipped nose first into the bay. a passing boat rescued the two passengers on board and they are just fine. wreckage was located late last night in 27 feet of water. private company conducting the search has but the out buoys marking the site. they don't want to disrupt traffic over this holiday weekend. investigators will use dna testing to identify what they believe is the sixth and final victim of amtrak crash in the nevada desert. they are expected to wrap up

work at the scene early this week. they are trying to determine why the truck driver slammed into that emeryville bound train at a crossing 70 miles east of reno. he and at least five people on the train were killed. about 20 were injured in that accident on june 24. >> more arrests in connection with pg&e smartmeters two people in santa cruz county face charges for blocking an installation. this is youtube video of the arrest. protestors are affiliated with a group called spot smartmeters. they were charged with misdemeanor obstruction and released. they will be back in court in august. a san francisco woman was recently arrested. pg&e says customers can delay using those smartmeters but they would still install them but a

meter reader would have to come out to the homes until they decide how they should be regulated. responding to their complaints pg&e says it does not hire contractors who are unlicensed to install the smartmeters. prince albert of monaco is a married man over the weekend. according to some reports it almost did not happen. there were words that she almost became a runaway bride days before it happened. ♪ >> wearing an off the shoulders armani dress she look stunning. palace said it took the team as 2500 hours to prepare. the dress had 40,000 crystals and 20,000 mother of pearl

our sea breeze has slackened off now and reestablish itself later today. heavenly is showing blue skies with temperatures here in the upper 40s. so a bit of a chill to start out. mid 80s later in the afternoon. we are looking back home at the golden gate bridge numbers in the upper 60s right now. you are on your way 80 degrees and upper 80s across the bay in oakland. already 80 in fairfield. we are will go at 75 in livermore valley. 74 in los gatos. another 20-25 degrees of warming today making it a very hot day. we're 11 degrees warmer in san francisco and 14 degrees warmer in santa rosa. that is what happens when we have the northerly winds. with the heat advisory the spare-the-air day temperatures are really going to soar.

numbers over hundred degrees in some spots. with a little bit of cool down on tap around the bay and coast we will see fog through the 4th but inland you will not notice much of a change until wednesday. here is the setup. high pressure to the north and out of that generating those northerly winds. with that sea breeze is cut off. we'll look for a rapid warmup today and poor air quality. very little mixing out there. wind are calm and late in the day, right at the coast you feel that sea breeze but you get ten miles inland and you'll notice the change. it will be warm with 90 in los angeles, much of the state is experiencing temperatures warmer than average. low 90s in yosemite and triple-digits in palm springs. we will be looking at widespread mid upper 90s 93 in sunnyvale.

90 in menlo park. 92 in redwood city. san francisco coming up today as well as south city 72 in the sunset. in the north bay very warm 98 calistoga 90 in vallejo and here with the relative humidity dropping we've got temperatures over 100 degrees 103 in some spots with 100 expected in livermore. 85 in salinas. with the fog returning tomorrow you may want to plan on a cooler evening. tonight it will be very mild but with a little fog returning we'll have to deal with low clouds with the fireworks. today very hot and a little breeze picking up. looks like mid-week cooler for everyone. >> now the time to check on the elderly and animals.

>> exactly. >> only police officers are now better prepared to deal with animals after a couple of tragic and embarrassing encounters last year. oakland's police chief promised to develop what has become one of the first training courses of its kind. alan wang with this update. >> when a young deer ran into a neighbor's east oakland backyard but they believed this was their only option. >> they didn't have to do that. >> when oakland police officers answered a burglar alarm five months later they shot and killed the family's 11-year-old dog. >> did you have to go to the resolve first. >> pepper spray mace and baton. >> many times i have been chased outside the backyard i had to hop over the fence never learned how to deal with those

situations. >> one year after the deer and dog incident, the east bay developed a course on animal encounters and the police chief launched the department's first training class. >> if you come upon a deer if it can get up and go let it go. >> they are using baton fire extinguisher and in some cases even tasers. >> that is a dogs you don't want to mess with. >> the course teaches officers how to deal with dogs. east bay spca found that most police officers use unnecessary lethal force did not have pets as children and were uncomfortable around animals as adults. officers are taught that dogs speak with their bodies most will crowell at intruders but

eventually back down. as you can see from this training video a dog will give up and give a hard stare. >> right there. not just the rolling the lips back and the ears. >> in some cases police encounter with a pet has led to a legal fight. >> lawsuits are becoming more prevalent. folks have had their pets shot by officers and they are being warned. they are taking a look at pets as family members. >> the city of richmond paid out $700,000 in wrongful death pet settlements. that is why they say police departments across the country are asking them about the training problem. >> spca has stepped up has taught us a lot about animal behaviors. i think its plus for us. >> police departments from san francisco and piedmont are reviewing the training course as our departments as far away as

a bay area man used craigslist to buy airline tickets what he says was a big trap. it changes his son's future.

michael finney has the story. >> dominic was thrilled to be accepted at st. john's university in new york. his father planned a two day visit and searched for airfares he could afford. >> three days i still couldn't find something so i went to craigslist. >> this caught his eye. airline tickets for low prices. he e-mailed the seller and right away he heard back. seller said he was delaying it. he used his frequent flyer miles to purchase two round trip tickets for $130 each and sell them for 280 apiece. >> it was a better flight. it was a nonstop flight. it was cheaper. >> so the seller broke the reservations and he received this itinerary directly from american airlines. tickets had to be purchased by midnight. so he went to this bank of america branch and deposited cash directly into his account. >> i e-mailed him he said go

ahead and confirm it. by midnight we were waiting and midnight rolled by and nothing happened. >> he called the airlines no one had paid for the tickets. >> i said to my son -- >> he told police he had been swindled and it worked like this. he reserved the seats which generated this itinerary however, there is no tickets until someone paid for them. cyrus told police he never did buy the tickets. he just took the money. >> really, i got sick to my stomach. >> more than money the incident changed their lives. he never got to visit saint john's and he decided not to go to school there after all. >> i really wouldn't want to go all the way across to the country to a school i had never

seen. >> as for cyrus he became obsessed to bring down the man that stole his money. he launched a website exposing his name, driver's license accusing him an ongoing scam and he found other victims. he e-mailed him repeatedly pleading with him to return the money. he filed complaints with the american airlines and bank of america america and he called me at 7 on your side. >> 7 on your side get the word out to the banks and the banks would see it was a big problem. >> we asked batching of america why his accounts remain open. the bank told us we do not close accounts based solely of an accusation by a third party. american airlines said we first learned of the scam late last year when other passengers called thinking they had tickets, too. american shut down paps frequent
