. >> a survivor of the sunken fishing ship off the coast of mexico is talking tonight. lisa is in the east bay where she spoke to a survivor about his ordeal. lisa. >> allen it's been nearly a week since the fishing boat, the eric went down and seven men as you mentioned, are still missing and hope is waning, but a survivor is home today and

he's not giving up on his friends. >> i thought to myself i could die here. >> charles is used to facing danger. he's a former oakland police lieutenant. he's now the chief of police for the contra costa college district. he was onboard the eric. >> just like the titanic. i could read the name as it went down in the water. i felt the feeling of abandon meant. >> the 57-year-old and several others were in the dark water confused and scared. he didn't have a life vest. instead he held on to an ice cooler. finally a fellow fisherman offered his. his brother is still missing. >> he gave me his vest, which saved my life. >> but then the group separated. charles spent 15 hours alone. he swam to an island where local fishermen found him and a

survivor. this is him back on land before he returned home yesterday. meantime the search for seven others who are still missing continues today. >> do you think they are still alive? >> i hope so. >> the coast guard has agreed to keep looking, at least until tuesday,. since the accident they have been found in the water and on nearby islands. >> if i made it to an island, they can. i hope they are on one of the islands waiting to be helped. >> the family is trying to stay strong but is having a hard time. they are bracing themselves for the worst. they would like a specialized dive team to get involved and search the sunken ship. >> their main goal is to get the dive done just to get the closer, whether my father in law, their father is down there. if that's the case, bring them home. >> and the mexican government has asked a dive team from hawaii to help. they could arrive on scene as

soon as tomorrow. live in san ramon, abc7 news. >> thank you, lisa. an ambulance was involved in a traffic accident today in san francisco. it happened around 1:30 this afternoon at 17th street and south vanet. the ambulance was not responding to an emergency when it slammed into the back of a car. an ambulance driver and a person from the car were taken to the o. there's no word tonight on what caused the accident. it involved a private ambulance from st. joseph's ambulance service. a family of four is among those injured after a 17-year-old driver crashed into several cars while leading chp officers on a chase in valero last night. two children were hurt and their mother and father are also in serious condition. the teenage driver slammed into four cars before he flipped the stolen hummer he was driving. the teen has a long criminal record and now faces charges

including felony hit-and-run. >> 75 weapons are turned into the gun buy-back program in east palo alto today. from handguns to rifles, just good anything was accepted. each was exchanged for $100 in cash cards. >> the first two years combined i believe we got 137 weapons off the street. today in the first hour and a half i think we are up to 42. so it's a safety issue. chances of you injuring yourself with a weapon or someone in your family with a weapon you had stored are greater than you using it for self-defense. >> the buy back program began two years ago after a toddler was accidentally shot to death by a twelve-year-old boy who found a gun in a garage. the search continues tonight for two men accused of sexually assaulting a boy at the santa cruz wharf. police released these sketches of the suspect. they are described at white men in their 20s.

they are accused of assaulting a 8-year-old boy outside a restroom on thursday. the child was not hurt. anyone about the information about the men are asked to call santa cruz police. a. >> michael: a man pleaded guilty to attempt to set fire to a hotel in oakland. at the time people, many disabled and poor, were living in the run-down bug-infested hotel. he was arrested in january after telling a federal informant about his plant. they said singer wanted to clerk the insurance on the building. he face as maximum sentence of ten years in prison. napa police arrested a man on drug charges in connection with a napa county marijuana garden where two men were found dead last year. 42-year-old carlos was arrested in his home.

he is connected to the pot farm but they did not say if he was connected to the deaths. his arrest comes after 3,000 immature pot plants were found growing on private property in rutherford. their bodies were found in a raid on july 1st. investigators are not saying how those men died. an army war veteran who lost both of his legs in iraq is dead after being thrown from a roller coaster. sergeant james thomas hackmeyer was ejected from the roller coaster at an upstate new york amuse men park. he was hit sitting in the front row when he was thrown from the ride another 50 miles an hour. park visitors were stunned by the accident. >> i said are you okay because she was shaking pretty bad and she said yeah, some guy just fell out of the superman and like in front of me. >> riders without legs are barred from two coasters at the park, but not the ride of steal. he lost both of his legs in 2008

year program. south sudan raised the flag of its new nation for the first time. tens of thousands cheered as the flag of sudan was lowered today and replaced as south sudan's first president took office of the world's newest country. during the celebration britain and the u.s. announced their recognition of sudan as a sovereign nation. >> on behalf of president obama, my fellow delegates the united states government and the american people, we warmly welcome the republic of south sudan into the community of sovereign nations. >> black african tribes of south sudan and the mostly aired north sudanese have battled for nearly five decades. it culminated in 2005, a deal led to today's independent

william and kate continue their whirlwind tour of california with theirty work. prince william salted up at the polo and racket club and the crowd ponied up as much as $4,000 each to meet the couple at the charity event. before the main event the duke and duchess were guests of honor at the vip lunch. tonight they will host a dinner to promote up-and-coming british film makers in los angeles. the ninth annual avon walk for breast cancer kicked off in san francisco today. [cheering] >> two thousand people are taking part in the event and they raised more than $4.5 million. each will walk up to 39 miles to support the ongoing search for a cure. all the funds will go to local breast cancer organizations. >> and up in marine county they were walking as well.

>> a little overcast. >> a little overcast. we have cooled back considerably in the last 24 to 36 hours. here's a live look from the high definition cam. you see a little bit of fog. some low cloudiness trying to make its way back through the golden gate right now. it will do so overnight. watch out for a little bit of the mist and dribble near the coast, maybe even near the bay as well. here's the current readings. 85 in antioch. that has to feel better than 95 or the 100 degrees you had most of last week. fair field checking in 78. 58 san francisco. 59 half moon bay. 73 san jose, and the numbers were down today. down 8 degrees in antioch. fair field down 14 degrees. we were down 6 degrees in san francisco today and down 9 degrees in mountain view. we will continue with the low clouds overnight. we will bring in a little bit of the coastal drizzle. another cool day tomorrow inland

and get ready for below normal temperatures as we head into next week. you can see with the low clouds and fog are right now. with those strong on-shore winds, all of this is going to push on through the gate over toward the east bay and make it's way out, more than likely out toward the delta area. keep that in mind. drizzle in the forecast. 54 overnight low for oakland, 53 san francisco where the sky is clear. santa rosa 47 and 59 for antioch. this is the setup. a high pressure all last week, bringing us the heat. well, things have started to reverse a little bit. jet stream is starting to push down toward the bay area. here's where we are. a cooler parcel of air will be settling over us. the cooling will continue for our sunday, right on in through most of next week. so temperatures actually by wednesday and thursday are going to run a little below where we should be for this time of year. we will start off tomorrow morning with the low clouds and fog toward the east bay.

strong sea breeze. the fog near the coast. look for 50s there. 60s around the bay. we will top off with mid-80s extreme east bay locations. those temperatures much cooler in the past several days. here's a look at highs. 57 san jose. coupe nine -- cupertino a comfortable 74. san francisco downtown 62 degrees. in the north bay. and 77%. sonoma 77. you see sunshine, midday sunshine. 58 for oakland, interior east bay comfortable numbers, 38 for pittsburgh, 82 concord, and we will look for 68 degrees for watsonville. a few low clouds for your neighborhood. check out monday tuesday, temperatures well below where we should be this time of year. upper 50s at the coast. speaking of next weekend, a reminder this year's a.i.d.s.
