>> good evening, everyone. abc7 has just learned that san francisco police have shot a suspect on third and oakdale in the bayview district less than a half hour ago. what we know at this time is that multiple shots were fired and one person is down. we have a crew arriving on the scene now and we'll bring you an update as it becomes available. now on to our lead story tonight. four close homes are being auctioned off in record numbers. there was a free auction today, and homes from all over northern california were on the block, but in this down economy some found they were still getting outbid.

professional investors are exactly what the housing market needs. >> for right now the investors are in a better position to move quickly with cash. frankly the sooner they clear market the better. >> turns out, even more foreclosed homes are supposed to be available in the next few months. economists say we won't see a slight housing recovery in california until late next year. alan? >> today's auction was run by auction.com. they organize auctions all over northern california roughly once a month. tomorrow they'll be in sacramento. they'll be back in the bay area in late august. hayward police identified the man found shot to death in his car yesterday. turns out he's the best friend of oscar grant, who was on the platform the night grant was killed by bart police officer johannes mehserle. john, what are you finding out?

>> candles appeared here earlier today. in about an hour, there will be a gathering of some family and friends to pay their respects to the young man. caldwell was shot to death as he was sitting in his cadillac yesterday around 5:30 in the afternoon. police say somebody walked up, opened fire and ran away. authorities do not have a motive, but they say this was not a random attack. caldwell was 25 years old, lived in fremont, the best friend of oscar grant. in fact, caldwell was on the bart platform in ruled on that fateful new year's morning in 2009 when oscar grant was killed by mehserle. now those who knew caldwell are showing up to pay their respects where this young man was killed. >> i don't know. it's shocking. just i don't know. i don't know what to say, because heht had -- it happenen broad daylight, which is crazy, too. i don't know.

it's just dumb, i think it is. >> johntue caldwell was the father of two sons, also the grandfather of grant's 7-year-old daughter. caldwell had a $5 million i feel rights suit against bart, claiming he was mistreated by another officer on that new year's morning. a short time ago we spoke to the attorney for bart who said that caldwell's death effectively ends his lawsuit against bart, and it's unclear whether any surviving relatives might be able to revive that lawsuit. so as we said a vigil set to start at 6:00 here involving family and friends. there is apparently some surveillance video of the scene during the shooting, but police not revealin releasing that, say have no motive or suspects at that point. >> a 12-year-old is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries tonight after he was hit by an suv while riding his bike in san jose on the 1500

block of hicks avenue. police interviewed the 32-year-old driver at the scene. they do not suspect alcohol or drugs were involved, but have not determined the cause of the collision. the 1500 block of hicks avenue will be closed in both directions until 6:30 tonight due to that investigation. contra costa fire officials think it might have been a prank, but say it could have had serious consequences. at least a dozen fire hydrants were opened some time between 11:00 and 1:15 friday night and early this morning. contra costa county fire protection district says opening hydrants can cause serious traffic accidents and it can also damage the fire hydrants. none of the fire hydrants in this case were damaged and there were no traffic accidents. anyone with information about this is asked to call police. in alameda county, neighbors and firefighters are coming together to keep their city safe during wildfire season. today in fremont, they held

their first workshop in a series of three. the intent is to work together, get local insight, and create a community wildfire protection plan. the collaborative effort identifies wildfire hazards and a way to reduce those hazards. >> we're really interested in hearing from the citizens, where they know there's wildfire hazards. we have professional opinion of where there's hazard, but the citizens know a lot about areas they're concerned about. >> the next community wildlife protection plan meeting is next saturday from 9:00 to noon at the oakland trudeau center. another day of searching for missing nursing student michelle lee failed to turn up any new leads. volunteers searched parts of hayward from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. this evening, and even though the hayward police have classified this case as a murder, the lee family is offering a $100,000 reward for any information about lee's disappearance. the polly klass foundation has

taken a role in the search effort. >> we're following up on efforts we've worked out with law enforcement. there's a couple that we've searched in the past that we're wanting to go back in and get a much better look at. >> lee was last seen 7 weeks ago. her car was found parked and locked nearby. an illegal dumping hotspot in san francisco gets a makeover. that's ahead. also, casey anthony is about to be a free woman. why her attorney says anthony is not particularly looking forward to her freedom. and lake later, the chain of events that led up to this big mess in minneapolis. >> checking out the emery cam in high definition, still a few clouds for your evening.

>> casey anthony is spending her last night in jail preparing for an uncertain future. jail officials in orange county, florida, plan to release anthony some time tomorrow. her attorney says anthony is scared to leave jail because of numerous threats on her life from people who believe she was involved in the depth of her daughter caylee. earlier this month a jury acquitted anthony of murder but convicted her on four counts of police. with time served and good behavior, she does not have to serve out her four-year sentence for that. talks are going on behind the scenes this weekend over raising the national debt limit. after weeks of bipartisan negotiations, republicans are split within their ranks, and the democratic-controlled senate is making its own plans without the white house. today both parties appealed to public opinion. >> you can't solve our deficit without cutting spending, but

you also can't solve it without asking the wealthiest americans to pay their fair share, or without taking on loopholes that give special interests and big corporations tax breaks. >> the solution to a spending crisis is not tax increases. that is why the only long-term solution is a balanced budget amendment to the constitution. >> leaders in both parties are scrambling to figure out what items can get through both houses of congress. right now there are not enough votes for any one plan to pass. well, the streets of san francisco may look a little cleaner tonight thanks to the help of hundreds of volunteers. more than 400 people along with the department of public works and mayor ed lee volunteered in the bayview during today's clean team event. the monthly cleanups rotate through the city's 11 districts. today volunteers landscaped, painted over graffiti, and picked up trash and debris. >> when you see a lot of really good dumping in neighborhoods, then dyla, you know, that contrs

>> a train derailment is being blamed for causing a bridge collapse near minneapolis. you can see the tipped-over freight cars spilled corn and diesel fuel. railroad officials say rains likely caused a washout of the

embankment supporting the railroad tracks near the bridge and the derailment of 17 freight cars caused the bridge to buckle. the train engineer and conductor were hurt, but they're expected to be okay. in los angeles, it looks like people heeded the warnings to stay away from the 405 freeway and they avoided the feared carmageddon of epic traffic jams. this is a bridge that crosses the freeway. it's being partially demolished as part of a project to widen interstate 405, one of the most traveled roads in the nation. there have not been any serious backups, but road crews say they've stopped people from trying to get on to the closed section of the road. one man was also arrested for jogging on that roadway. a 10-mile stretch of the 405 will be closed for 53 hours, and it's expected to reopen in time for the monday morning commute. well, harry potter's final showdown against lorshowdown ist

the box office. the finale in the series set a box office record earning more than $92 during its u.s. open yesterday. young fans of the series say they like the movie, but they are sad that it's the end of potter's tale. a little breezy, though. check out our winds. fairfield, hello to you. winds gusting at 35 miles an hour. calm down toward mountain view. look for the clouds to increase once again this evening into sunday morning. we check out our temperatures again. right now not too bad. 55 in oakland. 58 in redwood city. los gatos 57 degrees for you. temperatures today were 5 to close 10 degrees below average for this time of year. so tomorrow morning, we'll have some morning fog, maybe some patchy drizzle mainly along the coast. afternoon sunshine just today, and a few degrees warmer temperature-wise. here's a reason why we've been so cool and cleveland. an area of low pressure hanging off the coast for the past few days, not going anywhere. finally we'll start to move i think by monday into tuesday, but in the meantime one more day of cooler temperatures and fog, especially along the coast. you can see the satellite and radar in motion. there's that low right there. we'll take a closer look here,

kind of see the clouds that did dissipate throughout this afternoon. sunshine warmed things up a little bit. lows tonight will be in the 50s most areas. cloudy conditions return as that onshore flow moves back in overnight. for your sunday, it's looking pretty good. youñ2?ú know, a few clouds alone coast, but sunshine by the afternoon. mid 70s in san jose. cupertino, 77 degrees for you. as we head up the peninsula, 58 in pacifica. cloudy and foggy conditions throughout the morning hours. some sunshine by the afternoon expected toward half moon bay. how about the downtown area? 62 degrees for the high. temperatures in the 50s along the coast here through the sunset district. and as we head further up to the north, 73 degrees in santa rosa. 67 in hayward. again, cool conditions for this time of year. usually we're in the lower to perhaps mid 80s as we head further out toward the valleys
