again, according to witnesses, ran through the streets after getting off the t-third train. they say hjfé didn't have a tit and police tried to stop him. those are the words from those out here at the scene. they say there was a brief chase and shots were fired. again, there are a lot of officers here. swat police -- or swat officers and other police officers in riot gear arrived just a short time ago. they're spreading out on third as you can see behind me, and they're also blocking off parallel streets as well. they've been searching the area all along third, and then on the off streets as well, behind a gate that's also behind me that belongs to a rec center. it's not exactly clear what it is they're searching for, but we're awaiting word from police, and we're waiting for a spokesperson to give us more details. >> all right, thank you, lisa. well, tonight a vigil is underway at the gas station where a man was killed last

night. turns, out that man was a close friend of oscar grant, the man killed by a bart police officer on new year's day in 2009. abc7's john alston is live in hayward tonight. john? >> loved ones are just starting to show up. the memorial featuring a photo of caldwell, as well as candles, showed up earlier today, and very shortly there will be a gathering of his friends and relatives at the spot where he was killed. caldwell was shot to death as he was sitting in his cadillac yesterday around 5:30. police say somebody walked up, opened fire and ran away. they do not have a motive, but they say this was not random. caldwell was 25, lived in fremont, and was the best friend of oscar grant. in fact, caldwell was on the bart platform on that fateful new year's morning back in 2009 when grant was killed by bart officer johannes mehserle.

they're showing up where this young man was killed. >> i don't know, it's shocking. just i don't know. i don't know what to say, because he had -- it happened in broad daylight, which is crazy, too. i don't know. it's just dumb, i think it is. >> johntue caldwell was the father of two sons, also the grandfather of grant's 7-year-old daughter. caldwell had a $5 million civil rights suit against bart, claiming he was mistreated by another officer on that new year's morning. a short time ago we spoke to the attorney for bart who said that caldwell's death effectively ends his lawsuit against bart, and it's unclear whether any surviving relatives might be able to revive that lawsuit. police say there's no motive or suspects in the case. there was a surveillance camera inside the store, but apparently not one outside to capture what happened in the parking lot. live in hayward, john alston, abc7 news. >> thank you for that, john. in san jose, a 12-year-old is in the hospital with

life-threatening injuries tonight after he was hit by an suv while riding his bike. it happened on the 1500 block of hicks avenue. police interviewed the 32-year-old driver at the scene, but they do not suspect alcohol or drugs were involved, however they have not determined the cause of the collision. one cyclist who lives nearby says cars often drive too fast down that street. >> people just need to slow down, pay attention to the speed limit. there's a reason it's 25 miles an hour. kids live here. people are crossing the street. >> the 1500 block of hicks avenue will be closed in both directions until 6:30 tonight due to that investigation. another day of searching for missing nursing student michelle lee failed to turn up any new leads. volunteers searched parts of hayward from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. this evening. the lee family is now offering a $100,000 reward for any information about lee's disappearance. the polly klass foundation has taken a large role in the

family's search effort. >> a lot of what we're doing today is following up on some areas that we've worked out with law enforcement. there's a couple that we've searched in the past that we're wanting to go back in and get a much better look at. >> hayward police have classified the case was a murder investigation. lee was last seen 7 weeks ago at a hospital. her car was found locked nearby. it may have been a prank, but this prank could have serious consequences. someone opened at least a dozen hydrants in pleasant hill, martinez, lafayette and walnut creek. it happened between 11:00 friday night and 1:15 this morning. the contra costa fire protection district says opening the hydrants causes a hazard and could damage the fire hydrant, making it unusable during a fire. however none of that happened. an unusual sight in the southland -- an empty freeway.

the only people around, cyclists and skateboarders taking advantage of the opening swath of pavement. this as the so-called carmageddon weekend continues. so far traffic is moving smoothly several hours after authorities shut down a 10-mile stretch of the 405. all of this for a massive 53-hour construction project. you can see the work still underway tonight. they're removing the 50-year-old mulholland bridge as part of a welding project. most drivers have been cooperating with calls to stay away, although there are still delays in that area. the bay area has its own road closure tonight, although it is a bit smaller. highway 1 between lake street and the golden gate bridge will be closed in both directions from 8:00 p.m. tonight through 11:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. the closure will allow crews to shift traffic to a new bridge. detour signs will be up to help you get around that construction area. well, a deal on homes. the great deals you can get and

according to the dean emeritus of golden gate university school of business, professional investors are exactly what the housing market needs. >> for right now the investors are in a better position to move quickly with cash. frankly the sooner they clear the market the better. >> for the first time homeowners may get a great deal in sunnyvale. starting on monday, buyers who are eligible can put down $50 and get into a lottery. the winners will be able to purchase one of five single-family homes ranging from $433,000 to $468,000. that's about half of what these homes should sell for. applications will be accepted july 18th through the 25th at sunnyvale city hall. the lottery will be held on july 27th. tough talk from both sides of the aisle as the clock ticks down to the debt ceiling deadline. and another heat wave breaking records across the nation. also our cooler-than-normal temperatures continue today, but a warm-up is on the way.
