♪ ♪ norwegians in the bay area turned to their faith as they struggle to make sense of a terror attack in their homeland. i'm alan wang. friday's violent attacks in norway rocked the country and the shock wave struck thousands of ex-patriots living abroad including the norwegian community here in san francisco. cecilia vega spent time with them today. >> reporter: today was a full day of mourning in norway and

norwegians may have been thousands of miles away but it was there are was one place to go. >> at the church here in san francisco, sunday services were filled with prayer, song and disbelief. >> it used to be a peaceful corner in the world. >> the bombing attack on the government in oslo and shooting spree left 90 people dead, nearly 100 wounded and the country rocked with a level of violence not seen since world war ii. as the king and queen mourned at a memorial service, the bay area's norwegian community grieved, too. >> i don't have any family there but it's too bad. >> outside the flag flew at

half-staff. inside, they left messages of hope and tried to comprehend the guns's professed hatred. >> if you sort of understand and accept his rationale for doing this and loner's action to the great influx into a country that has for thousands of years has been very homogeneous. >> he teaches international policy. he says the attacks should remind the united states about the threat of home-grown terrorists. >> excusing the fact that he has not killed the immigrants but killed his own people. 90 of them are now dead because of hatred against his own government. >> these people say it will time to make sense of it all. for now they are just numb. >> the death toll is now at 93

people, but that number could still go up. there are many that remain missing at both crime scenes so the search goes on. and the lawyer for the man accused in the attack says his client confessed to the twin attacks but denies criminal responsibility. investigators say he wanted to trigger an anti-muslim revolution in norwegian society. both targets were linked to the left labor party and the first victim was an off-duty police officer that was hired for private security. they say the killer used special bullets designed to break up inside the body and cause maximum internal damage. he is charged with terrorism and will be arraigned tomorrow. >> police investigating the terror attacks are looking at a

youtube believed to be the work of him. this is an excerpt that details plans to acquire firearms and explosives. it promised revenge on those that betrayed europe. investigators believe the man at the time oh was published online the day of attack. parts of it were taking from almost word for word from the unibomber. the video includes anti-muslim immigration warnings. a strong earthquake hit northeastern japan around noon pacific time in the same region devastated by march's massive earthquake and tsunami. there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage after the 6.2 magnitude quake. it was centered 22 miles in the pacific ocean. yesterday a magnitude 6.4 quake

struck in that same area. president obama will meet with top senate and house democrats tonight amid the deepening standoff over the federal debt. it's the latest sign of renewed urgency that something has to be done. now, the latest from the white house. >> reporter: after talks resumed for a large scale deal, john boehner is now aiming for something smaller. "abc 7 news" has learned that he told them on a call that president obama is not serious. this morning boehner says the president is not ready to make a deal. >> i know the president is worried about his next election, but my god shouldn't he be worried about the country? >> he wanted the outlines of plan before 4:00 p.m. eastern to send a positive message to the

asian markets. the second deadline still looms. >> it would be devastating to our credibility as a country. >> speaker says he was ready to make a deal last week but the president's demand for more taxes broke off talks. white house says there was never an agreement. >> negotiations are not over until they sign a paper. president and speaker were extremely close. >> congress spent the day working on a special plan that would cut a trillion dollars, but democrats and republicans differ on how long an increase should last on the debt ceiling. >> president has said he will not sign a temporary deal. it's not clear whether boehner can get up votes to pass it and it may be too big for congress to deal with only a week left. democratic senator dianne feinstein said a deal is being

held hostage by republican politics but she said cnn she thinks she has a way for a deal to happen. >> we would probably take three part cuts to one parts revenues. what we won't do is take $4 trillion cuts with no additional revenues. we strongly believe that the wealthiest in our society should help with this crisis. lawmakers say a debt deal needs to be finalized by tomorrow so congress can volt on it in time. oakley police arrested a man for a shooting that left one person dead and a teenager injured. david vargas is being held on $1.8 million bill. he is accused of last night's shooting that killed 22-year-old omar martinez and injured a 16-year-old boy. the motive is still unknown but it was not a random shooting. >> in richmond police are

investigating another deadly shooting. the city's ninth homicide this month. it happened last night near 24th street and exchange place. 20-year-old man died at the scene. a second man was seriously injured. investigators believe the shooting is related to a gang dispute between a north and central parts of the city. it happened just two days after richmond announced the formation of a joint gang task force to try to stop the recent spike in violence there. and in san francisco, two passengers were shot on a muni bus early this morning. muni says it happened on the bay shore express near visitacion. there were six people on the bus and two were injured by gunfire. both victims were taken to the hospital and expected to be okay. police say the gunman was not on the bus at the time of the shooting and tonight they are still searching for him. >> the flismt has tlakd down a

man that allegedly kidnapped his own mother. he took his own mother from the home. the mother suffers from alzheimer's. investigators found him and his mother near los angeles. they initially believed he was hiding out here in the bay area. one of last gender barriers in the u.s. military is about to come to an end. that story is ahead. plus, they do in new york. hundreds tie the knot as gay marriage becomes legal. apple's next big move what the high-tech giant wants to big one really big storm. >> and we had nice clearing out, you can see the low clouds moving over the bay. we are going to warm up as we head into the latter part of the workweek. workweek. seven-day forecast is coming up.

two of the three suspects arrested in connection the beating of bryan stow will be arraigned tomorrow in a los angeles courtroom. they were arrested thursday and charged with one count of mayhem and assault. they are being held on $500,000 bail. a third suspect doreen sanchez was arrested but not charged. bryan stow is still being treated at san francisco general hospital. navy is about to break one of the last gender barriers in the u.s. military. initial class of 24 women is training on four submarines as they prepare to become the first female members of the submarine

force. the bay area has lost an aviation icon and historian and we have lost a dear friend. our aviation consultant ron wilson passed away this weekend. he spent 43 years as trusted spokesman for san francisco international airport. he loved in place and people and even problems so much when ron retired, he had more than one year of unused vacation. later as a consultant he provided a mine of information often help us better understand the story. he was a terrific spokesman, a good reporter and a great guy. when i first met him he treated me like an old friend. everyone here will miss him.

a landmark day for the gay rights movement as hundreds of same-sex couples tied the knot in new york. >> i now officially productive you legally married! >> they exchanged vows from niagara falls to long island as the law went into effect. in new york city alone 823 same-sex couples signed up at the clerk's office to get married today. one of the first couples to get married had been together for 23 years. i can't believe the experience. >> we did it in canada for our 20th anniversary but now it's more feengful. now, we can truly take care of each other. >> there were also protests against the new law with

opponents calling for a referendum on the issue. new york joined five other states when it voted last month to legalize gay marriage. >> only seems fitting the world's biggest apple store be in the big apple. the proposal to build 23,000 square foot store at grand central terminal that happens to be the world's largest train station. they signed a ten-year deal to open the store. they will review the plan tomorrow and it could be authorized by wednesday. a new plan to preserve the views of yosemite falls and granite dome calls for cutting down hundreds, possibly thousands of trees. the park service says the forest needs to be thin had out to protect the valley from devastating wildfires. final version of the plan is due

oakland 55, 52 in napa. 55 for san jose. area of low pressure still passing to the north of us. temperatures will be a little below our normal this time of year. once the low passes off to the east. high pressure will start to build back in. that high is actually what is causing a lost the highs back east. temperatures will start to warm as we head into wednesday, thursday and friday. we start off tomorrow morning with the mist and drizzle, coastside, out towards the delta. burns back to coast by tomorrow afternoon. north bay getting more into a northerly wind component that will keep the clouds and fog off the shore there. temperatures north of the golden gate bridge may warm a few degrees but otherwise look for temperatures inland locations in the mid-80s. highs for your monday, 77 for campbell.
