4:01 am
>> and with that august 2nd deadline less than a week away now, can the two sides compromise in order to avoid a devastating debt crisis? abc's karen travers joins us now from washington. good morning, karen. >> reporter: good morning, rob. good morning, tanya. in their dueling speeches last night, president obama and speaker boehner agreed on one thing, the nation cannot default on its debts, but how to avoid that catastrophe? that's where the finger-pointing came in. with less than one week until the government hits its credit limit, president obama scolded congress to get its act together. >> we can't allow the american people to become collateral damage to washington's political warfare. >> reporter: the president placed the blame on house republicans for refusing to compromise, but just minutes later, house speaker john boehner offered his rebuttal. >> the sad truth is that the president wanted a blank check six months ago, and he wants a blank check today. this is just not going to >> rep >> reporter: two plans emerged yesterday. one from house republicans that likely can't pass the senate and one from senate democrats that

likely won't pass the house. neither plan raises taxes, but each would cut the deficit by about $1.2 trillion. senate democrats would raise the debt ceiling through the sprprg of 2013. house e publicans would raise it only through next spring. the president warned last night that the republican option would mean simply rehashing this bitter partisan fight in six months. >> there's no point in putting the economy at risk by kicking the can further down the road. >> reporter: analysts seem to agree with the president that even if washington can avoid a catastrophic default, a short-term solution could still lead to a downgrade to the nation's credit rating. if that happens, analysts forecast a 6% drop in the stock market. the average 401(k) would lose $9,000. mortgage rates would rise at least half a point. that's a $19,000 hike on the average home loan, and 640,000 jobs could be lost. president obama said americans may have voted for a divided government but they didn't vote for a dysfunctional government.
