government loses its power to borrow money. there will be some funds from taxes to pay some bills, but not all. >> congress must find common ground on a plan that can get support from both parties, in the house and? the senate. it's got to be a plan i can sign by tuesday. >> late today the president met with democratic leaders to discuss next steps. >> it's time for the president to tell us what he's for. it's time for the president to outline how we get out of this cul-de-sac he's driven us into. >> the president has consistently backed reid's plan. >> boehner walked out on him twice, saying we have to figure this out at the capitol. now he's going back to the president. it's very bizarre. >> the senate meantime hasn't even voted on senator reid's plan. discussions should start tonight at 10:00 p.m. pacific standard time, but the real negotiations will take place behind closed doors tomorrow.

john? >> usually last-minute. thank you, lisa. a political science professor we spoke to says the impasse at the capitol is nothing new. he says both parties have the same problem of getting their members to budge. republicans have to persuade tea party members and democrats have to convince moderates who do not want to raise taxes. >> all you have is a back-and-forth between the two of them as they sort out, in public, those sorts of dilemma that is they have. so i think it's sort of normal politics, exacerbated by the criticalness of the problem, and again exacerbated by the fact that markets don't like what's happening. and moreover, there's a threat of a downgrade from moody's. >> professor brady expects lawmakers to come to a compromise before the august 2nd deadline, but says it will go down to the wire. without an agreement, the government won't have enough money to pay all of its bills after tuesday. come wednesday, bondholders, social security and medicare recipients, are the most likely to get paid. the possible losers, federal

workers in jobs deemed nonessential, private contractors, and local governments. in santa cruz, a lot of people are spending their saturday changing tires looking for a new paint job after vandals damaged 50 cars, dozens of tires were slashed, and swastikas were painted on about six cars. we're live in santa cus santa ch more on the aftermath. tomas? >> the vandalism that occurred last night, this car had a swastika carved into the paint. this is one of two we've actually been able to find. police say because of these symptoms, they're also investigating this vandalism as a hate crime. santa cruz police and residents say that at least 47 cars had either their tires slashed or their cars keyed. six with swastikas. police say all this happened in a three-block area of santa cruz cruz. the victim occurred between 11:00 p.m. last night and 1:00 this morning.

residents say the cars were vandalized while on the street and in their driveways. victims say the cars on one side of the street had their tires slashed while the cars on the opposite side had the cars keyed. one vandalism victim woke up to tow trucks this morning taking away cars with flat tires. >> up and down the street, everywhere you looked, were flat tires. we looked at our cars, and said, oh, thank goodness, at least we don't have flat tires. then someone else said, hey, check for keying, because they've been keying a lot of the cars. then we looked, oh, man. i mean, you know, i don't know how -- it's not going to cost that much to fix it, but the idea that someone is -- is imposing some kind of politics or something on a car. >> now, that's apparently what some people are thinking. that mercedes has two tires that are flat, that haven't been raider yet. this is going to be expensive for many victims who will have

to repaint portions of their cars, and tires these days are very expensive. so far santa cruz don't have any suspects. we'll have more on this on abc7 news at 11:00. reporting live in santa cruz, i'm tomas ramon, abc7 news. >> tomas, thank you. a shooting in oakland forced police to close west street this afternoon. a woman was shot around 4:00 p.m. near st. andrews' missionary baptist church. police closed west street near 27th while they investigated, but have since reopened the road. the victim was tine to the hospital. her condition is unknown. >> a series of burglaries has a belmont neighborhood on edge. just last night two homes were hit. it's happening in central belmont between el camino and alameda. police aren't sure if they're connected, but say there's a common theme each time the suspect targeted unlocked vehicles. wears hours away from learning whether two uc berkeley graduates imprisoned on spy charges might be set tree.

shane bauer and josh fattal are due in court later tonight for what iranian authorities say will be the last hearing, coming before the start of ramadan when muslims traditionally pardon prisoners. bauer's fiancee was released last fall on $500,000 bail. tomorrow will mark the two-year anniversary of their arrests. pg&e crews suspended work on an abandoned section of pipe in san bruno today due to concerns from residents who smelled gas. a section of pipe was once part of the gas line that blew up last year, but has been inactive since the mid-'50s when the line was relocated. pg&e crews say the smell is not a safety concern, but they've halted work on the pipeline until they can inform all residents there there's nothing to worry about. >> we were uncertain this odorant would be coming out today, so that's why we want to go back and communicate that to them so that they know that smelling the odorant might be a possibility when we do this work.

norwegians continue to stand together. ♪ today a memorial concert in oslo's main cathedral. thousands gathered to remember the people killed in the twin attacks. anders behring breivik, the anti-muslim extremist who confessed to the massacre has told investigators he also continued attacking other targets link go ahead to the government. a jet flying from new york crashed and broke in two while landing in the south american country of guyana. everybody on board survived. the caribbean airline plane slid off the runway, stopping just short of plunging into a ravine. 163 people were on board.

>> it's the end of an rare in milpitas. it's the time for the farewell skate at cal skate, one of the last skating rinks in the bay area, running nonstop for the last 34 years. >> parents opened the facility in 1977, and we've had a great run. we've developed a real culture here at ca cal skate. people are very sad -- people are very sad that we're leaving. we're sad that we're leaving. >> well, when cal skate opened there were 18 skating rinks in the bay area. once the rink closes tomorrow, only five will remain. the owners say the rink is doing well financially, but the building is too old to maintain. lots of fanfare in san

francisco for the grand opening of a new library. after 75 years the visitacion valley neighborhood has its own library branch. it officially opened today. the new library has a designated space for teens and children, a quiet study room, plus a program for after hour community meetings. the visitacion valley branch library is the 20th project to be completed under the branch library improvement program funded by a 2000 bond measure. it costs about $13.5 million. a new effort today in san francisco to record some of the 112 languages spoken in the bay area. researchers for the rosetta project held a record-a-thon at the internet ar chief i have in san francisco to capture languages on tape. researchers say a language becomes extinct every two weeks. today 50 different languages were recorded and digitally archiveds, a key step for researchers. >> if we can document 500 languages in the next 10 years or so, but at the rate that

continues below where we should be for this time of year. fairfield, only 81 degrees. antioch only 84. you should at least be in the mid 90s for this time of year. concord 7. only 69 degrees in santa rosa. 79 was the high today in san jose. here's a look at our current readings. 81 in antioch. we had 66 in oakland. and 73 right now in san jose. we'll continue with the coastal fog. we'll continue to move inland overnight. the mist and drive, high clouds will move in tomorrow. we have some very heavy sierra storms forming right now, and those will continue to plague the sierra for at least the next couple of days. you can see on live doppler 7 hd what i'm talking about. numerous lightning strikes in the last few hours. most of this rain activity is starting to die down a little bit. still staying a little toward the east of south lake tahoe.

tomorrow, though, if you have plans heading there, be advised that all of this will start to migrate more toward the west, and could possibly even bring some of those cumulus clouds toward extreme east and south bay locations right here in the bay area. we'll hold off on saying there will be thunderstorm activity. even yosemite village, some of those isolated thunderstorms plaguing that area. you can see the lightning strikes starting to to die down a bit. for the bay area, low clouds and fog were back to the coast. that's why we saw sunshine inland. coastside tonight, all of that will filter back inland. antioch 59. much of the bay area will stay in the mid to upper 50s with san francisco 54 degrees. the reason for this sub tropical moisture we have high pressure in the four corners. circulation is clockwise, so it's picking it up, bringing it up the spine of the sierras. we'll continue to see this feature for one more day. by monday, all of this shift

>> thousands of runners will hit the streets tomorrow for the san francisco marathon. the first wave of runners takes off at 5:30 a.m., about an hour after leigh glaser gets up. starting line at the ferry building on the embarcadero. runners make their way across the golden gate bridge, then back through golden gate park, where the half marathon will end. for those brave enough to run back at the embarcadero, the race will result in several road closures tomorrow, including part of the embarcadero, and two northbound lanes of the golden gate bridge will be closed to traffic tomorrow morning from

6:00 to 9:00. it is graduation day for five penguin chicks at the san francisco zoo. they graduated from fish school and have returned to their birthplace at the zoo's penguin island. the two-month-olds learned to swim and were hand fed to get used to people. there are now a total of 49 penguins at the zoo. the kids grow up so fast, don't they? going to school soon, have a job soon, 401(k)s. >> at 4:30 in the morning, let's get up and run 26 miles, what do you think? >> that's not going to happen. >> that's it for abc7 news at 6:00. thanks for joining us tonight. we'll see you at 11:00.
