pressure on the president just he prepares for some r & r. >> abc's karen travers joins us live from washington with the latest numbers. >> reporter: good morning. the credit downgrade, weak job creation and of course this wild ride on wall street, it's easy to see why americans are so pessimistic and why the president's poll numbers are falling. the global market whiplash continues. asian markets sell keeping up their pattern of mimicking the u.s. markets from the day before. the latest cause for sell-off, concerns that france, europe's third largest economy, could be the next country to face a downgrade because of issues. >> it reacts not only to factual aspects and fundamental aspects but also rumors. >> reporter: on wall street a week of massive swings down 600 monday, up more than 400 tuesday but those gains and morgann wednesday. the dow closed down 519 points.

the ninth steepest drop in history. >> it's not a full-blown panic yet, but it could get there. they're not throwing things out the window quite yet but they're not far from it. >> reporter: the last time the market fluctuated so dramatically the fall of 2008. the roller-coaster ride on wall street is the latest bad nick economist that has made it a terrible summer for president obama. a new poll found his approval rating sunk to 45%. 73% of americans say the country is on the wrong track and nearly half say the worst is yet to come. the republican presidential hopefuls now blood in the water. >> look, you can almost stick a fork in him. i think he's about done politically. >> reporter: the republican presidential candidates square off in iowa but their strongest will be aimed at president obama. >> leaders in europe canceled their vacations to deal with the

economic issues out there. people here want congress to perhaps do the same thing. on top of that the president planning a family vacation to martha's vineyard. any response. >> reporter: the american people don't fault the president for king a vacation and say he takes two every year and every yeararince he's been president there's been some sort of news that kept hip on the job. the president takes those. congress is out of town. washington is essentially a ghost town right now. people may say president obama should call congress back. he is not going to do that even if that is the right thing to do to get them to work on the deficit and on job creation so little bit lonely here in is a washington. it would be very difficult for him to negotiate with himself. >> a little lonely at the top. all right, karen travers in washington, thanks. we are following breaking news from the west coast this morning. a naval fighter jet has gone missing over the ocean off california. crews searching for the f/a-18 sea hornet in the area about 60

miles southwest of san diego. the plane was flying with another jet when contact between the two aircraft was suddenly lost. of the story and bring you the latest as it comes in. and in afghanistan this morning five nato troops were killed in a roadside bombing. a grim echo of last weekend's helicopter crash that killed 38. but we have learned that u.s. special forces wasted no time in striking back at the taliban for downing that chopper. the pentagon says that american forces were on the move within hours. abc's chris cuomo has the details. >> reporter: the troops were riding in a chinook helicopter brought in to support a firefight with the taliban. as it approached it drew small arms fire, a rocket-propelled grenade hit the chinook causing it to explode and crash killing all aboard. we're told the military led by special operations forces began an immediate manhunt combing the surrounding areas for leads. taliban fighters were identified including a man who fired the rpg that downed the chinook.

the suspects were believed to be trying to flee the area but special forces picked up their trail following them for 12 hours to a compound in a remote wooded area. after insuring that was clear of civilians f-16s fired and killed the taliban including the man who fired the rpg. >> our thanks to yis cuomo for that report. the men left 14 widows and 24 children. england is waking up since its first night of calm. thousands of extra police officers patrolled the streets. courts worked through the night to process more than a thousand arrested for rioting and looting and prime minister cameron wanted to restore order by whatever means necessary including the use of water cannons often used in northern ireland but not in britain itself. one of the most disturbing scenes is this one, a group of

asian stock markets took another hit today. investors are worried about big european debts dragging down the world economy. the latest from tokyo where abc's fujiakiko fujita is stand by. >> reporter: we saw a mixed bag throughout asia. in tokyo we saw those modest gains on the nikkei wiped out and renewed concerns about the european economy. the nikkei ended the day down 0.6%. much like the hang seng in hong kong. concerns about the u.s. credit

rating downgrade triggered the sell-off earlier but today those worries shifted to europe and a possible ratings downgrade in france. that convinced asian traders to unload bank shares and those of carmakers like nissan and to give you a perspective of how bad it's been in tokyo, the nikkei has fallen 8% in less than a week. we did see some good news in other parts of asia though. the two bright spots, kospi and shanghai index ending in positive territory so some bright spots amid the bad news in tokyo. >> akiko fujita, thanks. the number of foreclosures dropped last month to the fewest four years before closure rates dropped last year when allegations surfaced about banks approving foreclosures too quickly. banks are moving slowly since they aren't anxious to seize more houses with so many on their hands. the tough economy is one of

police in washington state found themselves roped into a roadside rodeo. a bull made a run for it after escaping from a ranch. the thousand-pound animal darted in and out of traffic with officers in hot pursuit, as you can see. after a 30-minute chase the bull started running out of steam and some wranglers were called in to corner, capture and cart the bull away. no bs on that. now for a look at morning road conditions. wet on both ends of i-95 this maine and florida. heavy downpours on i-90 from sioux falls to rapid city and on i-80 across nebraska. slick on i-40 from memphis to amarillo, texas and wet on i-40 and 35 in arizona and mexico. if you're flying today, are possible in just a few ays cities including denver and memphis. after a week-long nationwide manhunt three florida siblings have been captured. >> we got their latest mug shots

overnight. this is how the so-called dougherty gang looks now after a dramatic high-speed chase and another shootout with police. >> but in thend their final standoff wasn't as violent as police had feared. abc's ryan owens is following the story from walsenburg, colorado. >> reporter: the trio so many thought would never be caught alive was on a lonely stretch of colorado highway. police chased the so-called dougherty gang down this interstate for 20 miles at speeds of 100 miles an hour. >> the subjects fired at pursuing officers. and then there were shots fired at the crash site. >> reporter: two of the young suspects were arrested right after the crash. one brother ran for it. but was captured by these daring construction workers. >> he did give up without too much of a struggle. i think he was done whether from the accident or just tired. >> reporter: the siblings from florida were first spotted in colorado. they bought a tent at this camping store. but the trio has been on the run

for more than a week since leading florida police on this chase a few hours later, they were accused of robbing this bank in georgia. why did they run? investigators say the youngest, 21-year-old ryan took off instead of registering as a sex offender. his older siblings had trouble too. dylan, a drug conviction. lee grace was wanted for a probation violation and recently worked as a stripper and posted these pictures and said she liked causing mayhem with her siblings. it's that bond that had law enforcement so worried. they said it was not an ordinary gang but literally a family quite determined to go down together. they are spending the night under the same roof. it's just at the county jail. ryan owens, abc news, walsenburg, colorado. ththprince pam of a private school in memphis has b has beed dead and a 17-year-old student is in custody.

a teacher found her body two days after the school year began. so far no charges have been filed and police are not releasing any information on the teen who wasasaken into custody. the fbi has now joined the investigation into the maryland tourist whose missing in aruba. robyn gardner's travelling companion says she vanished while storkling but they say she wasn't the type to snorkel. gary giordano is being held as a suspect and he has a history of domestic abuse. one of the mars rovers have sent back new pictures of the martian surface from a crater never seen by human eyes before. they were taken by the rover "opportunity" which landed on the red planet in 2004 and was only expected to function for three months. the other rover "spirit" lasted much longer than expectations falling silent last year. now for some baseball

spending 15 minutes underwater and he was just reunited with a little girl who helped him be rescued. here's tom jensen. >> reporter: a day at the beach nicole will never forget. >> i heard some boy say, help, help me. >> reporter: nicole was boogie boarding in the surf when she heard that call for help from 12-year-old dale ostrander. dale was caught in a riptide that was pulling him farther and farther from shore and he didn't know how to swim. >> he kept his head above water for a really long time. i'm surprised. >> reporter: so nicole paddled to dale and helped h h on to her board before trying to paddle back to the beach. >> he looked really, really cold. not cold enough to like freeze up but just below shivering. >> reporter: nicole was raised swimming in the northwest rivers but she said the tide was too strong and kept pulling them and pushing them. they couldn't get to shore. finally a huge wave pounded down on them and knocked them both in the water. nicole's dad pulled her to
